Games are entertainment and are therefore intended to entertain and amuse, if you do not get amused or entertained by playing this game, or any intense satisfaction from beating a boss, this game and 'genre' are likely not for you and there is nothing wrong with that. Spirit is one of the vital parts of your success in this game right, it fills the role of stamina but unlike stamina in other games (you know if you know) not all actions consume it and some actions increase it. Hitting someone who is blocking gives you a small bit of spirit and decreases theres, there are special effects that can increase and decrease these numbers but the main way you will get spirit is dealing health damage and deflecting. We want it in the blue because that lets you use martial arts to some actual affect, use spirit attacks that decrease the maximum spirit of your victim or simply block attacks (and thus open your victim up for massive damage), but dont be afraid of being in the red, the only time its bad to be at low spirits is when your about to be slapped by a combo or are being swarmed. Blocking attacks generally prevents all physical damage but you cant completely block magic or martial arts, blocking is okay but we want to deflect. If we deflect an attack not only do we not take damage, we can deflect spells, counter martial arts and gain a healthy amount of spirit while draining our enemies spirit, the core of your combat strategy should be about depleting the enemies spirit and hitting them with a fatal strike, it also makes the brain make the happy chemical which is something you need if your looking for a steam guide to help you lmao. Now you know everything you need to know about spirit, give yourself a cookie. Morale is another important part of this game and is much easier to understand, the core of it is the higher this number, the more damage you deal and the less damage you take, the same applies to enemies. If you get hit by a martial art your morale goes down by one (maybe), if you hit an enemy with a fatal strike you gain a lot of progress towards your next morale rank and the enemies morale goes down by one, congrats thats all there is to morale. Resolve is your minimum morale, if your resolve is 20 your morale cannot go any lower then 20, typically you start with zero in both. You gain resolve by planting flags, big flags give more then the small flags, planting a flag heals you (and your companions) to max health. Big angry flags give the most resolve, in every main mission theres enough flags to get yourself 20 resolve. Aim to have 20 before the big bad boss of your mission. you have five(ish) attacks, regular slaps which make up the majority of your assault, spirit attacks which cash in on your spirit, martial arts which are guard breaking moves and spells which are guard breaking moves for nerds. You also have fatal strikes which is what you want to do as often as possible. Fatal strikes are your most important attacks since they not only cash in on your spirit if your positive (which i wanna say increases the damage) but also bring your spirit to neutral if in the negative, this means you can get a free weapon buff off before you cash in to deal massive damage and fill a status on your victim while also decreasing their morale by one, possibly increasing yours by one and thus giving you a statistical advantage/evening the playing field and just making you feel super good about yourself. Fatal strikes can be preformed on unaware enemies for the same effect but beware buffing your weapon could alert your victim of their impending backstabbing. Otherwise your only means of getting a fatal strike off is by depleting the enemies spirit, the best way to do this is by filling your spirit gauge into the blue and preforming a spirit attack which permanently (Sort of) lowers the enemies maximum spirit, thus making it easier to karate chop them. Again the best ways to raise your spirits is hitting an enemy for actual damage and deflecting them, you are able to raise spirits while only doing one (such as by just flat out dodging attacks and attacking) but that will be slower then doing both, which means more time to get slapped yourself. Each piece of kit comes with a special effect, this is consistent across each identical piece, for example the Podao will always regardless of rating have the special effect of HP+, which increases your HP, the guaranteed special effect cannot be removed, meaning if you dont want to dedicate a gem slot on your Podao to extra HP you cannot do anything about it. some armour sets come with set bonuses as their guaranteed gem, for example every azure dragon crescent glaive will always have 'With sky high righteousness' as will every piece in the ser magnificent beard set, its worth noting that the set bonuses take up a unique gem slot instead of a standard gem slot. In simple terms, even if you dont want to use the set bonus you still benefit from some special effects on your armour/weapons/accessories. Your gear's rating (the stars) indicates how many special effects that piece can handle, so common gear (one star) will only ever have the guaranteed special effect (or in the case of set bonus gear, the set piece bonus and a randomly selected special effect), for this reason, minimising one star gear usage is vital (and thankfully easy). So as you progress in the game you'll recruit famous characters from the three kingdoms time period using an easy to come across item and in some missions you are simply accompanied by these characters for free, as you kill enemies with them you'll accumulate oath xp, if you max out a characters oath (10 levels) you get a complete set of armour, their weapon set and any accessories they wear, all four star. So become one of Liu Bei's BBFs and get his armour set and dual swords so you can get massive amount of spirit regen and free healing while also getting 16 special effect slots to work with. Salvage any armour and weapons you dont like so you can upgrade his armour set and kit it out fully with gems you like, i recommend putting copper obtention on all pieces of armour so you can afford future upgrades, i would also recommend enemy detection and marking flag detection so you can see where enemies are on your map and also spot marking flags that would be hidden out of sight on your map, aside from that just pick whatever you like, the man of benevolence armour set is already good defensively so getting spirit damage up is a worthwhile investment. Statting out your character is very easy and none-committal in wo long so your free to experiment unlike in Nioh or fromsoft games. Wood virtue is one of your most vital stats no matter what sort of build you like because it gives the most health and increases your spirit, each level in wood gives +7 health compared to the +3 from other stats. Also increases 'wood' (lightning) damage. Aim to have at least 15. Fire virtue buffs your spirit gain on attacks and makes martial arts cheaper while increasing your fire damage. Earth virtue increases your max equipment weight and spirit gain for deflecting, get this to at least eight for some good offensive spells, 40 if you want to get a massive health buff from spells. also buffs earth damage. Metal virtue decreases the rate in which your spirit goes from positive to neutral as well as decreasing spirit cost for spells. Increases 'metal' (poison) damage. Water virtue decreases the cost for deflecting (thus gaining more) while also increasing your stealth which makes your stealth 'better' (i have no idea how, i wanna say it makes enemies awareness gauge fill slower), increases 'water' (ice) damage. Weapons gain bonus damage based on your stats so pay attention to your weapon's virtues and the letters besides them. Wo long also incorperates the five phases in the virtues which has some implications. The first of which is that when you increase one of your virtues your also increasing a vulnerabili
