How long does it take to no longer be sick of a game after completing it five times in a row? Apparently a little over five years! Welcome to the 2.0 version of my guide to Tales of Symphonia. The content won't be changing much, just edits to polish up here and there, fix the few errors that squeaked through, and maybe explain a few things earlier on. What is going to be changing is that I am going to be adding links to video clips (and maybe pictures) as I am going to test this walkthrough by playing through the game myself and posting it on my (tiny) YouTube channel. Before I head into it, I want to thank everyone who has used this guide over the past five years, especially those who took the time to upvote, comment, and generally make me feel like it wasn't just a waste of time. I know this update is long overdue, and sorry about that, I just really had no desire to touch the game again anytime soon after about three hundred hours in a row! I wrote this guide because I found myself with literally a dozen different tabs open when I was playing this game. This is the kind of walkthrough I wanted to have: one that outlined how to earn everything as you go, rather than one with all the side stuff in another section at the end. If such a guide already exists, I didn’t see it, and maybe I wasted a bunch of effort. It's my first guide ever, so yay for me? I present to you now a second, hopefully more polished draft. I assume you already know the basics of how to play. If I missed anything, or you spot an error, please let me know. Maybe I will get around to it when another five years have passed (kidding... probably). Oh, and I am not planning to add stuff like a full bestiary, details on figurines, etc. That kind of stuff wouldn't fit organically into the walkthrough, would just end up being appendices at the end, and therefore you might as well open another tab to reference one of the many existing guides out there when you need them. This walkthrough will reduce the number of tabs you need open to a few, not necessarily just one. I don’t care if you rip this off, I didn’t do it for recognition anyway. You’ll be something I can’t say in a public forum if you do, but I’m not going to make any empty legal threats about it. Extra special super thanks to all the authors of the various FAQs I referenced to get me through the game the five or six times it has taken me to compile and earn everything: Kratos15254, Phaelin7, Franklin WI, seorin, r_mage, DarthMarth, A l e x, and Dreamwalker. One last thing before I get started: a hugely useful tool, especially if you missed a treasure chest and are sitting at 99.6% completion, check out http://rngeoff.com/SymphoniaSaveViewer/Home/ . Save files are generally located at C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[USERID]\372360\remote, even if you installed the game on a different drive (very sneaky, Steam). I also remember that I used Cheat Engine to speed up the game during long grinding sessions. Not to actually cheat, so if you want advice on that you'll have to look elsewhere, just to save myself a little time and sanity. I will likely do the same in my replay (though note that I do NOT plan to play through five times to earn everything again!). And now, a few months after starting to update, I find myself going back and revising things yet again. Thank the relentless comments from user kilicool64 for pointing out all the little things that I missed that, while not strictly necessary, should probably be included in a walkthrough that claims to be about completion. Sigh. *Cracks knuckles*. Let's do this. I really suggest, for your first playthrough, not to bother with any of the special challenge titles. For later playthroughs, however, you will want to plan ahead for what you want to accomplish, usually based on what titles you want to earn. A lot of titles will come naturally with story progression, side quests, simple battle achievements, etc, so you will likely earn a good number of them just playing through the first time naturally, especially if you use this guide to make sure you don't miss anything. The subsequent playthroughs involve picking specific titles you still need to earn, buying specific Grade abilities to help earn them, and then playing through with the requirements for your target titles in mind. (Grade is a special currency you earn based on your performance in combat. It can be spent with a couple merchants in the game, but its main use is in the Grade Shop that is accessed when starting New Game+ to buy things like carrying over elements from your previous playthrough, leveling more or less quickly, or starting with extra hp or items.) I won't list all the possible titles and how to earn them here (I will point out opportunities to earn them throughout the walkthrough), as it would not mean much to those starting out and there are plenty of good guides out there specifically for titles that I would suggest checking out. That said, I will go over the major points and systems that necessitate multiple playthroughs. Affection is the main mechanic that you will have to manipulate in order to get specific events to fire the way you need them to in order to earn specific titles. Every party member other than Lloyd has an affection score that will change throughout the game based on decisions you make. I note throughout the guide when affection can be earned (or lost) and by how much, so if you are keeping track go ahead and grab your notepad and calculator. (The SaveViewer I linked above can be used to look at your current affection levels as well, in case you lose track). If you're not bothering to keep track and just roleplaying the easiest character to get to high affection levels is Colette. The primary turning point in the game for titles is called the Flanoir Doctor Event. During this event the three party members with the highest total affection levels will be available, from which you must choose one with whom you will have a special scene, sometimes earning a title and even a unique item. This scene is THE reason the game needs five playthroughs (or four with save manipulation if all you care about is the achievement, not having all titles at once). If you want to 100% you will need to pick Colette, Genis, Regal, Zelos, and Kratos once each. Remember, to choose them for the FDE they only need to be in the top three, not necessarily the highest affection. There are two events that award extra costumes (needed for titles) and will require multiple playthroughs and a bit of affection tracking. There is the Formal Dinner event which happens late game after completing a side quest. Lloyd will always get his costume and then you pick three others who will also gain theirs. Since every party member other than Kratos needs one, that means you won't have them all until the third playthrough. The other is the Beach Party which works similarly, except that you only get to choose one party member and the other two will be the two party members with the highest affection. Again, Lloyd is automatic and Kratos does not have one, so a minimum of three playthroughs will be necessary, but watch those affection levels and plan accordingly! The Completion titles are rather self-explanatory: collect all the items, fight all the monsters, master all the recipes, etc. These will, surprise surprise, take multiple playthroughs, but if you follow the guide they should eventually come naturally. There are two that need to be done in a single playthrough and moreover are missable (within a playthrough, not overall) so use the guide and maybe keep a checklist. These are speaking to every dog in the game as Colette (when I say as a character I mean you need to make that character the "lead", aka their avatar is used when moving around the map), and flirting with all the women as Zelos.
