A 'Crash' course on how not to die

Whether you got pinged cause you were sitting broadside in front of a convoy (or did not and get pinged randomly anyways), wandered too close to your prey, or just managed to hit your juiciest torpedo volley of the day (hopefully they weren't all duds), the alarm just got raised and all bets are off. Destroyers are homing in and the dreadful ASDIC ping is reverberating like the 6AM alarm in the morning. What do you do now? First, orient yourself: how many destroyers are there? If there's one, it's manageable If there's two...it's doable If there's three or more...WHY DID YOU HIT THE CONVOY TO BEGIN WITH?? Second, Flank forward and crash dive towards test depth (the yellow circle on the depth meter) Third, Consult the BT chart in Resources. If you tell me: "I can't read graphs!", there's a youtube video about it. If you still don't understand, god help us all. Hopefully god is merciful and have your work cut out for you in the form of a thermal layer. If so, go just below it and you'd be a lot more invisible than the average submarine. If not? Hey, that's what this guide's for. I think? Four, redirect your ship to be moving away from the nearest (and probably pinging) destroyer in order to minimize your hull exposure and maximize the chances of getting yellow(dirty)-pinged instead of blue(clear)-pinged Optionally, set a timer and reset it whenever you get blue-pinged so you have an idea when do they last know where you are. Hopefully at this point you've managed to, by a combination of thermal layer reflection and hull alignment, spoofed the incoming sonar pings so much that they destroyers lose track. Once 10-20 seconds pass without a clear ping, you may consider slowing down to blend in as it is likely that the destroyers have transitioned to their hydrophone phase, 1/3 or full stop will do. Once you shake off their aim, (having the destroyer pass over you anyways is normal, don't panic. Usually.) Keep moving away from the high-pitched hydrophone source, and if the destroyer is masked by your own propeller noise, stop every minute or so to re-align yourself until you are clear and can re-engage or disengage. Congratulations, you have survived being chased by a boat with big bombs! In the more likely scenario (either due to a lack of reachable thermal layer or captaining mishaps), you can't seem to shake the destroyer(s) off, and they keep pinging you. 1. Stay IN FLANK. You'll not run out of battery until you either escape or die. 2. Keep moving away from incoming pings. You'll need the speed anyways. 3. Once you see the BCOD (Blue Circle Of Doom and despair) representing the proximity propeller noise show up, PAUSE, hard left or right rudder (your judgement, there's way too many factors for a rule of thumb here), ascend/descend (if you are near crushing depth usually ascend), unpause, and count to five (depth charges dropped). Then pray. 4. If you didn't die yet, you may have been grazed by one or more depth charges instead, and this is why going up helps(in this regard as well): damage causes flooding and flooding causes uncommanded sinking. Sink too deep and you get crunched by water. 5. Once you have gotten your ass back together, listen carefully: if there's weak pinging sounds in the background with no sonar pings on your hull, that means the depth charge explosions threw the destroyer(s) off too. Immediately slow down to 1/3, dive back down to test depth, and consult section 2. If you are pissed that the destroyers are happily attempting to murder you (or they keep bloody finding you, or there's a pair or more [god help you in that case]), you may wish to feed them a fistful of torpedoes and spread the love around! A few disclaimers: 1.torpedoes have a minimum arming distance of 300-400 yards. 2.if you stay afloat (don't) or at periscope depth for too long you'll get shot (by the deck guns, duh) 3.It's very hard to get a good reading on the destroyers as they zig zag around a lot and are fast 4.this is not an efficient usage for your torpedoes. So. You still wanna stab 'em? Fine. 1. You want to line up the shot as best as you can so the torpedoes don't have to turn some 180 degrees which will definitely make them miss 2. If the BCOD is still on your screen you can use it to estimate range. 3. AOB and Speed (I usually go with 20 kts, netted me some hits) will have to be eyeballed. 4. SALVO AWAY! 5. Immediately dive afterwards to avoid any incoming deck gun rounds. 6. Pray (a recurring theme here, innit) 7.??? 8. profit Enlist Today! [insert WW2 propaganda here] That's it. Begone now, and go kick some Japanese ass. --- Источник: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3784136133
