Welcome to your worst nightmare - roofing in HF2! Hopefully by the end of this guide you might feel ready to try placing a roof or even get more adventurous with them. I recommend you try this out and practise in Sandbox mode as it is a lot easier than in story mode, once you have more understanding of how roofing works you may be ready to try it in story mode. If you find this guide useful PLEASE leave a thumbs up it means a lot :) I am going to use a 'T' shaped house to demonstrate various roof options and the most common mistake made that causes players the most problems There are 5 roof types HIP, Half HIP, Corner HIP, GABLE and SLOPE (look at the tool tip on the lower left of your screen to change the type), to place any roof first select a starting point which has to be on the top of a wall, Three clicks are required to place the roof, click ONCE to place the start point, then drag it to set either the length/width and click a SECOND time (use the scroll wheel to rotate it if it isn't orientated correctly) then drag again to set the last dimension and click a THIRD time to finish and place the roof. In this example I have placed the roof directly on the ceiling which looks fine from the outside but because a roof is TWO bricks deep and the ceiling is only one brick deep the result inside is a disaster So now, with one simple trick, we will learn how to get that perfect finish inside every time! Because a roof is TWO bricks deep but a ceiling is usually only one brick deep parts of the roof slope will show in the room below it, to prevent this from happening place a brick perimeter around your ceiling (I have made mine green for clarity but you would use the same finish as your outer walls) Now place your first roof piece on top of the brick perimeter drag it to size and click to place it, it doesn't have to END on a brick perimeter, it just has to start on one! If you look inside at the room below there is no roof slope showing through this time Now you can place a roof knowing the room below will not be affected we can get more adventurous, each roof shown uses the standard settings for pitch etc: which you can experiment with but you are advised NOT to change the two settings for 'roof clipping as this can cause problems with how a roof behaves. For this first roof I will use 2 x GABLE pieces, the first goes across the widest part from front to back (always place the widest roof first as it will have the greater height unless you change the pitch) We now have a hole at either end of the roof, using the wall tool change the setting 'Limited by roof' to YES (this is for sandbox only) Then starting as far into the corner of the roof as you can build a wall the full width of the gap and at least one brick higher than the roof (in story mode lay a single row of bricks and work your way up to the peak of the roof). This will fill in the hole perfectly, repeat at the other end. The second gable piece goes the full width of the house from one side to the other, as you drag it across past the first gable piece you will see the roof trim appear to dissect it, because of the way the default 'roof clipping' settings are configured this roof trim will disappear when the roof is placed Fill in the open ends of the new roof with bricks The inside of the roof is an open space (again due to the clipping settings) and the inside of the rooms downstairs are free from roof elements The more you understand how roofs work the easier it will become, mix and match to get different effects, Sandbox is the ideal playground for this, I added another floor to the 'T' shaped house Then used some different roof types SLOPE, HIP and half HIP Good luck with your roofing and if this helped you at all please leave a like, happy roofing and even happier flipping! Here is a link to a video guide by 'Midas Designs' that shows most of what I have described in case you find this easier to follow, he uses a double ceiling instead of a perimeter wall, either option works but I prefer the perimeter wall so that stairs only have to pass through a single layer of bricks https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilXx0AXHv0M&t=4s With the May update came 4 new roofing options, this is a little guide on what those new options are and how best to use them The 4 additional options are shown below the 5 original roofing types when you access the roofing menu, these new options are STRAIGHT (original default shape), BEND IN, BEND OUT and EAST ASIAN, the original 5 roof types are, from left to right, Hip, Gable, Half hip, Sloped and Hip corner. 2 new roof textures were also added one of which is recolourable. The picture above shows the 4 roof types when used on a HIP roof, as you can see they all look very different However, when used on a GABLE or SLOPED roof the 'Bend in' and 'East Asian' roof types are identical Essentially this means you should only use the Hip, Half Hip and Hip corner roof types if you want to create those East Asian roofs, the Gable and Slope roof types make excellent fillers though. This first picture shows how to use 2 x Hip Corner pieces to cover an extension, notice that the green perimeter wall is actually showing at the 2 corners due to the curvature of the roof so make sure you build your walls high enough, or, extend the roof outwards and create an overhang which will cover it up. This next picture shows the HIP roof, the curve is set at 4 which is the maximum setting for these new roof options Finally the HALF HIP also used to cover an extension, very similar to the 2 x Hip corner pieces but has a pointed centre peak TIP: Trying to see which way some of these roofs are facing can be a problem, just remember that, with the new '3 click' method of roof placement, it is much easier to change the roof orientation while you are placing a roof. If it looks wrong after the first 2 clicks use the scroll wheel to rotate the roof and see if that looks better BEFORE clicking the 3rd time The simplest way I can demonstrate this is by using a small box placed on top of a larger box so that the roof areas on the lower floor are the same size. Using a 'HIP CORNER' piece place the roof so that the flat top edge is the same width as the wall it rests against (I reduced the roof pitch from 6 to 4 for these pieces) Place an identical piece (copy/paste if you can) against the next wall aligning the flat edge to the wall and the sloped edge to the first roof piece Do the same for the next 2 roof pieces so that they surround the upper floor Finally place a 'HIP' roof piece on the top floor but increase the 'roof pitch' to get a more pointed profile (I set mine to 11) If you want this style of roof on a building with unequal sides use the 'HIP CORNER' only on the corners of the building and insert a 'SLOPED' roof to fill in the gaps. 2xHalf Hip on the top floor can also create a nice finish As can extending the overhang on any Asian style roof Roofing is still not easy and this guide does not cover all the methods or tricks for placing a roof but, hopefully, these few tips might make it a little less painful for you and give you the confidence to experiment more with roofing in general. If you found this guide helpful please remember to leave a like or a comment, it is VERY much appreciated! --- Источник: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3619871569
