So there are a couple settings I want to discuss before explaining world creation. The character point pools in the world defaults are by default set to survivor. This lets you assign however many points you want to a character during character creation. You can set this to either any or legacy multipool if you want to limit how strong your character is, but the devs intended for the survivor setting by default. Probably because people were min maxing their builds by constantly choosing certain traits and leaving other traits untouched leading the players always playing the start the same way. Like always choosing squeamish to refuse to wear filthy clothes straight from zombie corpses so you have more points for other things. The other setting is meta progression in world defaults. The description of this setting is that if you set it to false, you can play any starting scenario that you want. However, the tougher starts can be impossible without you bringing meta knowledge over the course of playing the game to said starting scenario. Or the scenarios could spoil certain factions for you. So set it to false at your own discretion. World creation You will see a menu with sliders for making cities sizes larger and the distance between cities smaller. So if you want there to be hardly any cities slide it to the left and mega cities move this to the right. The difficulty slider is self explanatory. Left for easier and right for harder. The random npcs slider makes npcs more or less frequent. Left for less npcs and right for more npcs. In order to bring up the mod manager you press m on this menu. A couple mods are added by default. Like disable npc needs. Because with that setting enabled its fairly hard to play the game as intended due to just how much food the npcs require with it on. I like to play with the magic core content packs enabled (magiclysm for traditional magic, mind over matter for psyonic powers and xedra evolved for sci fi based 'magic' where you are basically agent mulder from the Xfiles I think), you may prefer to only have one enabled so your character doesn't get too many spells to quickly. These packs also add in monsters relative to their mod pack spawn in the world. So magiclysm will let owlbears spawn in I believe. The other mods I like to enable are bombastic perks and mythical martial arts in the misc additions. Bombastic perks lets you choose from perks after defeating a number of enemies. Mythical martial arts adds in extra martial arts. I like diamond mind from that mod pack as it boosts your spear damage based on your intelligence stat among other benefits. Don't go adding all the mods to the world you plan on creating as some don't play well with others. Like for the total conversion mods it wouldn't make sense to have sky island enabled if you also enabled the innawood mod. When you're done adding mods, press escape to go back a menu and then press f to finish creating the world. Custom character creation Select new game, select custom character, select the world you created earlier, and wait for the game's components to load. By default the point allocation is set to survivor if you didn't make changes in the options. Press tab to go to the next portion of character creation which is choosing a scenario. Tab and shift tab are used quite a bit in this game, so you may want to change the Steam overlay default keybind from shift tab to something else. Or just turn off the overlay for this game. For scenario the basic choice is evacuee. This is the easiest starting scenario to choose from. As you go down the scenarios usually get tougher and tougher. And if you've enabled the various magic mods you should check the origin field on the top of the right scenario description as the magic mods add in some different starting scenarios for you to try out. Provided you've unlocked them. Or disabled meta progression. Tab again to choose a profession. Survivor is the most basic choice as you start with a messenger bag to carry loot, a wrist watch to tell the time if you ever leave your smartphone somewhere. The smartphone will let you track your calories and vitamin intake. A matchbook to start fires. And finally 2 portions of clean water in a sealed plastic bottle. Some of the other professions leave you with nothing, like the shower victim. While others give you quite a bit to start with like the assassin or military marksman. Here you will see quite a few professions related to the magic mods like "Test Subject, Project ONYX LIGHTNING" from the Mind over Matter mod or the "Would-be Wizard" if you want to start with a beginner's guide to magic. Tab again to choose a background. Backgrounds allow things like being a lizardfolk (if you have magiclysm enabled), to being a chess master. Tab again to choose your stats.
