Gearing for gearheads - how to make the engine go brrrr and the car go fast

other than the most simplistic early cars you will want and need to use gears to adjust the engine-output to drive your car. Gear allow you to connect more engines to your car, to have allwheel drive, to change the Speed and acceleration and even build gearboxes. This guide is a work-in-progress. Any corrections/ideas/contributions welcome v0.1: Initial guide-layout, basics about why/what v0.2: information about gears v0.3: first example v1.0: examples from basic to shifting There are a total of 5 gears and 2 shifters that can be unlocked: Basic gears: Cause it allows us to more easily reach good top-speed and have a good acceleration. You can get surprisingly far without gearing: A basic car with a basic engine can still go rather fast with good acceleration, but it will not be good enough for later races. With gearing you can gain better acceleration, or better top-speed. And with an auto-shifter you can get both. (Numbers are taken from the analysis-tab) As an example we will look at a really simple small car: Thin rubber tires, 1x "IgnCore-125" engine, 1:1 drive ratio (so no gearing). This gives us a nice little car with 61km/h topspeed and a decent acceleration of 27m/s² (that number is only a rough guideline). But a topspeed of 61km/h is not all that fast. Lets switch to a Medium:small gearing to get more speed. And we get a nice 25% increase in topspeed, but at the same time we lose just as much on acceleration. This can be better seen in the build-mode statistic as this shows the previous and current torque/speed-curves overlayed. And for completeness the same gearing but in reverse - increase acceleration but decreasing topspeed: The difference is quite drastic now and this acceleration-focused car is no good as everybody else is far faster. This is where shifting comes into play: You can get the acceleration of the slow car while also getting the top-speed of the fast car. And as you can see: it no longer fits our small little car Of course there are downsides to shifting: gearing and specially shifters adds complexcity, cost and weight. For these simple examples instead of fancy shifting it is better to add a second engine: When geared for the same 76,5km/h topspeed it also has a 31m/s² acceleration nominally... in reality it has vastly better acceleration from 0 to topspeed. and it is simpler to construct too But when you want faster cars you need better gearing and then just adding more engines will no longer work as the car starts to become too heavy. Gears can be connected in a few ways. The 3 "normal" gears can only be mesh together edge-on - either vertically or horizontally, but never diagonally or any other way. The Corner-gear is the exception in that it can be connected at 90° to each other (but contrary to the others they an not be connected in an L-shape). large Each gear has its own (internal) toothcount and size. The toothcount leads to tje gearing-ratios - these are what is important when building bigger gear-boxes, the size is how far away the teeth of the next gear have to be. gear teeth size A picture is worth a thousand words (or at least a couple) So here some examples of how exactly the gears can mech together Big-Big Big-Medium - ratio 8:5 Big-Small - ratio 2:1 Medium-Medium Medium-Small - ratio 5:4 Small-Small Corners can connect in-line or at 90° But NOT L-shaped like the other examples Now comes the fun part: Constructing a gearbox that shifts. Luckily shifting in this game is easy - the game does everything for your. You do not need to worry about having a clutch, or in which direction the gears go, or when to shift, or how to connect multiple shifters together. The basic concept is simple: You use gears to change the gear-ratio and with that the speed and torque available, and the shifter will shift between 2 (3 for the large one) configurations, always choosing the one that gives the most torque at the current RPM. The basic shifter looks like a 3-beam with something sticking out to the side. How do you use it? the contraption sticking out moves back 1 stud for shifting - pulling along all gears attached. With the moving gears you want to have them mesh with different gears to form different ratios (or go to different paths) A simple gearbox looks something like this: Red marks the shifter, pink marks the axel connecting the engine to the shifter (if you forget to connect them then it just doesnt move at all), blue is the moving part of the assembly, green is the stationary part. Here we can see that normally the small-gear on the shifter meshes with a medium-gear on the output - so it is downshifted and has higher acceleration but lower top-speed. And when the shifter shifts then the medium-gear on the shifter meshes with the small-gear on the output - now we reach a higher top-speed - which gives us this characteristic bumpy torque-curve: The red-line marks the shifting. Progression: Now here is an example of transmission you can use for (Ranklist/TechTree)Career mode. It uses parts in order of unlocking of ranklist. These are NOT fully working cars but instead focuses only on the transmission-part. The used Tire/suspension only becomes available later and Tire-size has a slight impact on acceleration/Topspeed (larger tires => higher topspeed, lower acceleration) simplest beginner car Directly driven axel as there is nothing else at that point. gears With the first gears unlocked use a Medium-to-small transmission to increase topspeed, and 2 motors to combat the lowered acceleration 4WD These are 2 options for 4WD - both use the Electrix-360 motor (the 2nd electric motor). Cornergears can be used but here take a lot of space. Combustion The simplest of ICE. Slap 3 engines onto the axel and call it a day. ICEs are a bit worse at low RPM. Hybrid 2 combustion + 1 electric and speed-gearing. The electric helps out with initial acceleration. gearing hybrid with shifter. it uses the same engine-layout and gearing as the previous hybrid, but with the shifter it can reach a lot higher topspeed. A closer look at the shifter: In the default position the power goes from a small-wheel to the axel with a 1:1 ratio. When the shifter moves to the retracted position the power goes through medium-to-small gearing (5:4) twice. so 25:16. Going from direct-drive to this should give the car 56% more topspeed and when we check: 88.6km/h * 25/16 = 138.4km/h - checks out. The gearshift here is intentionally large as there are only 2 gearratios to choose from for the shifter End Game: used to beat the last monarch easily: It uses small, medium, corner and planetary gears and 2 shifters The setup is rather simple with a few small IgnCore-250 as the engines, connecter to the first shifter that has either a small-medium downshift or a medium-small upshift, and then to the second shifter that either has a 1:1 connection or a planetarygear reduction. This results in 4 different gear-ratios and with the 8 IgnCore-250 engines that is plenty of acceleration and top-speed to give a nice car. These are the 4 different power-paths: This setup is enough to easily beat career-mode and quite a nice car overall. --- Источник: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3284178329
