This guide is valid for the current version of the game as of July 17, 2025 (V1.02 EA). I may or may not update it to include future content, but if I do, it will be noted here. Put on some red music and start your journey! The main mechanic for China is the Maoism meter. When it's positive Mao is in power and you'll have some bonuses to guerrillas, and if it's negative Mao will be kicked out and one of a few random leaders will take power, each with their own effects. I'll run you through on the most important ones for this guide: Of these leaders, the best, without a doubt, is Zhou Enlai . He gives a whopping $5/turn budget increase for the rest of your game! Liu Shaoqi also gives the same $5/turn increase, but he comes with a caveat - a negative 5% in superpower score. Of course, you'd want to avoid him. Peng Dehuai gives +5% score, but not any budget increase. He'll slowly be outcompeted by Zhou and even Liu over the course of your game. The other leaders are not really worth talking about for this guide. There is also a special bonus for Maoism - when it is over 25, you will get a very powerful event that gives +2500 prestige and oppositions everywhere: Your goal now is simple - find a way to get Mao in and out of power as many times as we can to get Zhou Enlai and the bonuses he provides, while also somehow boosting it to over 25 to enjoy the special event. Luckily, that is perfectly achievable in a 1949-1976 game. In 1949, China, wracked by the civil war and with zero power projection, is still a long way from being a military superpower. Your military capabilities are limited and you can only sign defense treaties with countries in your sphere of influence. Breaking out of this situation is your main goal, but it often seems unachievable... or is it? Let's talk first about Research and Development (RnD). These projects will only become available to you a few years into the game, but they will give plenty of score and pass by pretty quickly. Below are the different projects and the superpower score they provide: - Atom Bomb : +15 score - Hydrogen Bomb : +5 score - Satellite : +5 score - ICBM : +10 score - SLBM : +5 score That is a total of 40% from RnD alone. A good chunk of the way there, but you'll need events to get the other 60% or so. These are the projects you can feasibly research in a China game. MIRV and SDI also give superpower score, but they take too much time and give too little prestige (you could've gone to the moon two times before the MIRV is completed) Before starting the events guide, I will give you one piece of advice: if you want to become a superpower, it is EXTREMELY important to KEEP TAIWAN ALIVE UNTIL APRIL 1955 . I know many China players will want to rush and reunify the motherland before the Americans get their grubby hands on it, but you absolutely need to be patient for reasons I will explain later on. Without further ado then, let's begin! This Events Guide will mainly concern the ones that adjust superpower score or Maoism. The other ones depend on your international situation and are up to your discretion. THE ANGUS WARD CASE: Hand them to Americans - This decreases Maoism and avoids US AI being too hostile to you THE LIBERATION OF SICHUAN: Crush them all - You will want to avoid Taiwan becoming too stable and impossible to start a guerrilla movement later on THE SOVIET BIG BROTHER: Sign with joy - Increases superpower score by 10% and budget by $5. The other option decreases Maoism and has a chance to increase budget by $5 anyway, but you won't get that crucial 10% score. THE NORTHWEST BANDITS: Launch major operations - Don't do the other one which increases Maoism - remember that we want Mao out for now COLLECTIVIZATION: Proceed incrementally - This is a bit of a no-brainer: of course you'll want more budget KIM'S DREAM: We cannot wait! The Korean War is one of the most important events for China, especially if you are chasing superpower score. Just joining it grants 5% score, and it just continues stacking up. I find that the Korean War almost immediately ends after recapturing Seoul, so I suggest lengthening the initial North Korean invasion OR the South Korean invasion for as long as possible. Signing a Turn 1 defense agreement with NK will help here. After the failure of the initial North Korean invasion, jump in and periodically send military aid to NK to keep the war going. In February 1951, you will get the MiG-15 event which gives a whopping 15% score!!! Afterwards just continue the war and watch out for the periodic "Soviet military and industrial aid" mini events which grant 1% score. You should aim for 35% by the time Truce In Korea happens, but sometimes if you're lucky enough with RNG you can get it to 40% or higher. Don't forget to withdraw your troops from NK afterwards! I was unfortunately unlucky and only managed 32% before that pesky truce happened. In a case like this I encourage you to turn your attention instead to Indochina (see below) LIBERATION OF TIBET: Peaceful Liberation - The other one grants less prestige and costs more money because you need to invade Tibet CAO BANG: Depends - You will also want to keep the Indochinese war ongoing until 1954 for reasons I will explain later. If Viet Minh looks to be losing, help them. If they seem to be winning, hold off on supporting them. SUPPRESSING COUNTERREVOLUTIONARIES: Spare former nationalists - Doesn't increase Maoism too much and also decreases Taiwanese stability THREE AND FIVE ANTIS: Corruption is marginal - Both choices decrease budget, but this one also decreases Maoism If you kept the Indochina war going until now, that event is your reward. It's rather hard to get unless you're actively trying for it, but it is well worth the money invested into Indochina because it grants 3% score and also a potential 500 prestige points for unifying Vietnam again. THE MATSU ISLANDS: Shell them - You will only get this if Taiwan is alive (and you didn't integrate it, did you?). $5/turn drain looks annoying at first but it will lead into the next event YIJIANGSHAN ISLANDS: Liberate them It is important to save before this event (so make a save in December 1954) and reload until you get the Taiwan Strait Crisis below, because it gives 5% score. TOWARD THE BOMB: Begin researching the Atom Bomb from here. $10-15 should be enough. Do you remember what I said to keep Taiwan alive until April 1955? It has to be for this below event to occur! This is THE most important event if you want to become a superpower. Let the flight blow. It is costly at $5/turn, but in exchange you will regularly get superpower score through a mini event "Technology trade with Western companies". But you MUST keep Taiwan alive until if you want this to happen. I might be repeating myself but I have to stress this here. If you want to get to superpower faster, you can also be a bit insane and just constantly save/load until you get tech trade with Western companies every turn to game the RNG. HOWEVER, if the year is 1964 and you are only a few % points away from being a superpower, I fully encourage this tactic before the Third Front event sets you back again A SMALL LEAP FORWARD: Collectivize but don't hunt down the counterrevolutionaries - Decreases Maoism and increases your budget, exactly what we need Afterwards a few more events will fire: de-Stalinization and Hunger. Both will decrease your Maoism just enough for you to be able to kick him out! Save and reload to get Zhou Enlai for the $5 extra budget. But he won't stick around for long, because... Somehow, Mao returned. Launch the 100 Flowers campaign to bring him back on board! A RIGHTIST MOVEMENT: The criticisms are wholesome - This decreases Maoism back to 0 and kicks him out again the next turn. Save and reload AGAIN until you get Zhou Enlai AGAIN to get $5 MORE BUDGET! I personally use the extra budget to research satellites and scrape by on what's left The collapse in October 1957 is unfort
