Hey and welcome to the Beat Chart Editor! We will go through some of the basic functions of how custom charts can be added to the game here. A quick note before you begin: You are free to use this tool however you wish but please be mindful of copyright and only use tracks where you have license for the audio you want to share. Your exported level will contain the audio that you used for charting, so please be mindful of that when sharing .bvctr files. Before you begin you will want to: 1, Get your audio converted to a .ogg format. You can do this by using many popular free tools offline or online. 2, Get the BPM count of your song. You can do this by tapping along to the beat and counting the beats manually or by using an analyzer. Tap BPM is great for a quick recording tool, and I also found Tunebat to be pretty good. 3, Get a PNG file with a 1:1 ratio for your cover image. 4, Determine the length of your song (in seconds). With that information in hand, you can begin your chart creation process! 1, Click on New Chart 2, Fill in the data (BPM, song in sec) 3, Save the chart to your desired location by hitting "Confirm" and selecting a folder. Now you have what essentially is the map. You can always save this chart with the "save chart button (4th from the left)" and come back to it later when you can load it using the "open chart button (2nd from the left)". In order to start charting you will need a song. Find your .ogg file using the "open song button" (3rd button from the left) and load it. from now in if you hit "Play" in the bottom left, you will see the time marker moving across your chart. Before we begin adding notes let's go through the user interface a bit. You can see this small section above the note icons. By default each chart has a single section with a starting point of 0ms. If for whatever reason your song's bpm doesn't line up with 0ms you can always adjust it by updating the offset parameter, to precisely tune in where your first beat should be counted from. If your song has multiple tempo switches in it, that require multiple offsets, you can use the "Tempo Slice tool" that will allow you to slice your chart in the middle and adjust the bpm for each section accordingly. Just don't forget to keep an eye on the "Selected Section" dropdown when making these adjustments, so you are not adjusting the wrong part of your chart. A big big warning here: IF YOU ARE ADJUSTING THE BPM OF AN ALREADY FILLED SECTION YOU MIGHT END UP WITH A GARBLED CHART OR LOST NOTES. This is not a feature that should be used for correcting already existing sections and should be used before you begin placing your notes as it can be A DESTRUCTIVE OPERATION. At the bottom left you will see the standard operations that will influence what you hear while charting your song. Given that you already loaded a song, once you hit Play, the song will start playing. The two icons on the right of "Play" are the "Target Sounds" and the "Metronome". Target Sounds : Whenever the Play Marker (the vertical red line on the timeline) passes through a target it will make a sound if the Target Sound button is active. Useful to get a sense of how the map will sound to the user playing it given that they have hit the target at the perfect hit time Metronome : The metronome will tick at the BPM you have set for the given section while this toggle is on. Useful to identify where your offset should be, or if bpm adjustment is needed. The Pause and Restart buttons will pause or restart your song respectively. Pitch Shift is a tool that will help you zero in on certain sounds when you are playing the song slowed down. You can give it a try by adjusting the playback speed to 0.5x from 1x and listen to the same section with or without shifting the pitch. While generally you won't need this if you just want to zero in on the exact location of a beat, it comes very handy when you are working with bass-heavy songs like Dubstep or DnB. The toggle will pitch down when the song is played at a higher than 1x speed and pitch up if you are playing it below 1x. Playback Speed : you can speed or slow the song up or down. I primarily use this feature to understand more complex beat patterns better, or to check quickly how the song will play on speedy mode. Grid : the grid dropdown will help you adjust the distance between the gridlines in the background of your chart. By default it is set to 1/16 of a beat and goes up to half a measure. It's purely a visual aid and has no effect at your chart. These are the standard buttons you will use most of the time. By clicking on any of them your mouse will be holding a single target / note that you can place anywhere on the Timeline. Notes beside 1/16 are all default notes but 16th notes have 3 sub-types: Default (needs a single hit), Aim (needs to be aimed at) or Miss (needs to be avoided.) You can toggle on the left which note type you want to place. Once you place a note you can select it by clicking on it on the chart, and you will see it turns yellow, and the note details panel will fill in on the right side of the screen. You will have the option to adjust its length and note type via this inspector, and read the most important details about it. One setting to remember is the Release Angle. When you want to make a curved hold note, this is the value that you want to tweak, in order to determine in which direction your hold note should twist. I recommend keeping the angles proportionate to the duration (60-90 degrees for quarter notes, 180 of halves, 360 for wholes etc). The release angle is inconsequential to a 16th note as it doesn't have a hold segment. If you want to place multiple notes at once you can simply select one from notes panel with a left button click, navigate to the timeline, hold your left mouse and drag your cursor along the way where you want to place your notes. When you are placing notes on the Timeline you are operating on two parameters Horizontal - Time: when is the note played Vertical - Angle: from which direction the note arrives from Once placed, you can move a selected note left, right up or down using your mouse, or direction keys and thus adjust their timing or rotation. You can select multiple notes at once either by holding the shift key and manually clicking on your desired notes, or by dragging your cursor across the chart editor by holding your left mouse button pressed. You can also move the selected notes by dragging them with your mouse to their desired location. If you take a look at the right side of the Timeline, you will see some note icons. These are shortcuts that will allow you to execute common operations like spreading notes apart or pulling them closer to one another. They are meant to be used on small group of notes (3 to 12 notes). Let's take a look at them one by one. Spread Horizontally : This button will locate the central-most note and place one 32nd space between them. Pull Horizontally : The reverse operation. Spread Vertically : This button will locate the first note from left to right among your selected notes and add 30 degrees of rotation to each subsequent note in your selection (moving them vertically on the timeline). You generally want to use this when you are creating circular patterns. Pull Vertically : The reverse operation for the spread function. Flip Horizontally : This operation will find the horizontal center of your selected notes and mirror it horizontally. Useful when you are adjusting patterns but realized their "flow" isn't quite right, need a different exit or entry point from a miss pattern or so on. Flip Vertically : Same concept only on the Y axis swapping the angles. There are only a few rules to keep in mind when editing. These are: 1, you shouldn't place multiple default / aim notes at different angles at the same timestamp (given that it is impossible for
