How to FIX Historical Campaigns

A long time ago, I played Shogun: Total War and discovered that some of the historical campaigns didn't work properly. After searching the internet, I gradually found fixes for each broken battle and decided to write this guide to help others repair them. I no longer remember where I found the individual instructions, so I apologize that not all sources are credited here - they came from various forums and websites dedicated to Total War games. There are five battles that do not work correctly or cannot be completed due to scripting issues. The problem stems from a late patch by the developers that changed how reinforcements are handled, which ended up breaking several historical battles. Here are the affected battles: 1. Kublai Khan – Mount Fuji Battle 2. Oda Nobunaga – Nagashino Battle 3. Tokugawa Ieyasu – Kakegawa Battle 4. Tokugawa Ieyasu – Yoshida Battle 5. Tokugawa Ieyasu – Sekigahara Battle Here is the source for one of the fixes I used years ago: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php/36132-Fix-for-Broken-STW-Historical-Battles 2025 UPDATE The guide was updated on November 20, 2025, based on tips and help from General Plastro. I added a new, improved fix that makes the battles playable while staying closer to their original, pre-broken design. The old fix will remain available but will be at the bottom and spoilered. Use the new fix please. 2026 UPDATE Another quick update on July 26, 2026 - There is another possible fix for the historical battles and few other issues. I recommend to check this one https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3729190229 Kublai Khan - Mount Fuji Battle 1.- Go into Steam\steamapps\common\Total War Shogun 1 Gold\Battle\batinit\Historical Campaigns\Kublai Khan\Mount Fuji (or where you have this folder) 2.- Find samurai.adf , open it in NOTEPAD (Use CTRL + F in NOTEPAD to find it faster) and delete all this lines in every unit where you will find it. Reinforcements:: (Delete it also with numbers!) Oda Nobunaga - Nagashino Battle 1.- Go into Steam\steamapps\common\Total War Shogun 1 Gold\Battle\batinit\Historical Campaigns\Oda Nobunaga 1534\Nagashino (or where you have this folder) 2.- Find Takeda Katsuyori.adf file. Open it and delete all this lines in every unit where you will find it Reinforcements:: (Delete it also with numbers!) Tokugawa Ieyasu - Kagekawa Battle 1.- Go into Steam\steamapps\common\Total War Shogun 1 Gold\Battle\batinit\Historical Campaigns\Tokugawa Ieyasu 1542\Kakegawa (or where you have this folder) 2.- Find Imagawa.adf file. Open it and delete all this lines in every unit where you will find it Reinforcements:: (Delete it also with numbers!) Tokugawa Ieyasu – Yoshida Battle After further testing and comparing this battle to the original Shogun: Total War, I’ve found a better and more accurate way to fix it - based on valuable feedback from General Plastro. 1.- Go into Steam\steamapps\common\Total War Shogun 1 Gold\Battle\batinit\Historical Campaigns\Tokugawa Ieyasu 1542\Yoshida [( or where you have this folder )] 2.- Find Takeda.adf file. Open it and delete all this lines in every unit where you will find it Reinforcements:: (Delete it also with numbers!) 3.- Now we also need to edit Tokugawa.adf , but this time it will be a bit trickier. Compared to the old fix, this one is much more accurate to the original version and how the battle is supposed to work. In the old fix, one of the musket units was missing at the start of the battle. You should have 4 musket units at the start instead of 3. Find every unit which have this line in them and delete them completly. Reinforcements:: (Delete it also with numbers!) Here is example of what need to me deleted UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 33409 35200 Direction::232 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::lancers TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::20 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true Reinforcements::5 DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: There should be exactly 7 units like this that you need to delete. Once you've removed them, the final step is to add the following block at the very bottom of the file and this will place the reinforcement units at the end of the full unit list. UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 33409 35200 Direction::232 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::lancers TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::20 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 34788 33878 Direction::232 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::lancers TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::20 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 32547 33878 Direction::232 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::nodachi TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::15 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 33823 32557 Direction::232 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::naginata TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::15 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 30375 17600 Direction::270 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::samspears TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::20 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 31202 17706 Direction::270 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::samspears TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::0 Columns::20 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: UnitStart::"Unit" InitialLeaderName::"" IsGeneral::false Position:: 32030 17547 Direction::270 GeneralRank::1 LeaderHonour::0 UnitMon::1 TroopType::hcavalry TroopNum::120 TroopHonour::3 Columns::20 CurveRadius::1 FormationType::FORMATION_CLOSE MeleeMode::ENGAGE_AT_WILL FatigueLevel::FRESH HoldPosition::true DelayTillEngagement::false GeneralIsDaimyo::false ArmourLevel::0 WeaponLevel::0 UnitEnd:: Now those 7 units will act as reinforcements. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a way to make them arrive on the battlefield at the exact times they’re supposed to, so it will be entirely up to the player to decide when to deploy them. If you use them right away, the battle will be a lot easier. For historical accuracy, however, the first wave of 2× Yari Cavalry, 1× Nodachi and 1× Naginata unit should arrive after about 5 minutes of battle. In this fix, you have them available from the start. The remaining units, which don’t appear on the battlefield initially due to your army’s unit limit of 16, are 1× Heavy Cavalry and 2× Yari unit. In the original scenario, these were meant to arr
