This guide is intended to improve overall performance, scaling, and audio quality. It will also fix issues with the Steam overlay (such as scale and latency). All of the goals are primarily achieved through converting the emulation layer from DosBox to ScummVM. ScummVM will automatically attempt to detect and remove audio popping OTF. However, for best results, the resource file should be patched to remove the pops, which are the result of poor encoding. What this will not do is fix the constant audio peaking. It's very likely that these peaks are present on the original masters, which JJ has confirmed are lost to time anyway. Short of extracting all audio and manually cleaning up each waveform with modern software, there is likely no way to fix this. 1. Install ScummVM . https://www.scummvm.org/downloads/ 2. Install 7-Zip File Manager . https://www.7-zip.org/ 3. Navigate to the game folder . - Right Click the game in the Steam Library. - Click Properties - Click Installed Files - Click Browse... 4. Open the GK1 directory in the game folder. 5. Right Click GK1.GOG and Select Copy . 6. Create a New Directory to store the game files (ex. C:\GK1) 7. Paste GK1.GOG into the New Directory. 8. Rename GK1.GOG to GK1.iso 9. Open GK1.iso with 7-Zip File Manager . 10. Click Extract 11. Extract all files and folders to the New Directory by Clicking OK . 12. Close 7-Zip File Manager . 13. Delete GK1.iso from the New Directory. 14. Open ScummVM . 15. Click Add Game... 16. Navigate to the New Directory and Click Choose . 17. Select Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (CD/Windows/English) and Click Choose . 18. (Optional) Check Use original save/load screens to enable the original game's UX. 19. Click Ok and Close ScummVM . 20. Navigate to the ScummVM Install Directory . - Default is C:\Program Files\ScummVM\ 21. Select scummvm.exe and WinSparkle.dll . - Hold Control to select the other file. 22. Right Click one of the files and Select Copy . 23. Paste the two files in the Game Folder from step 3. 24. Rename SierraLauncher.exe to SierraLauncher.exe.bak 25. Rename scummvm.exe to SierraLauncher.exe 26. Right Click the Game in the Steam Library and Select Properties . 27. Add the following line to Launch Options: --no-console -f gk1-cd-win 28. Launch the game and verify it runs . -A ScummVM splashscreen should display briefly during launch. ScummVM does this natively, however, for better performance, cleaning up the master resource file is recommended. 1. Download the XDelta Version of the mod. https://alltinker.itch.io/gk-speech-fix 2. Copy RESOURCE.AUD.xdelta to the New Directory for the game. 3. Download the windows_bin_x86_64.zip version of the Delta Patcher . https://github.com/marco-calautti/DeltaPatcher/releases/tag/v3.1.6 4. Extract DeltaPatcher.exe to the New Directory for the game Using 7-Zip File Manager . 5. Open DeltaPatcher.exe in the New Directory for the game. 6. Click the Folder Icon in the box for Original File: 7. Select RESOURCE.AUD 8. Click the Folder Icon in the box for XDelta patch: 9. Select RESOURCE.AUD.xdelta . 10. Click Apply Patch . -This may take a minute with no progress indication. 11. Click OK once the patch applies and close DeltaPatcher . The game should now run in native 1080p with correct upscaling, no audio pops or skips, and proper Steam Overlay support.
