The first time you launch the game you'll be put into the tutorial. Most of the game functions will be locked until you complete it, so follow tutorial dwarf's instructions and complete the adventure as soon as you can to move on to the rest of the game. I'd highly recommend doing this before you go any further in this guide to avoid confusion. Important Terminology The formation (1) is the arrangement of champions on the field. You start with just Bruenor (A.K.A. Tutorial Dwarf) but will unlock more as you gain more gold and hire new champions. A formation slot (2) is an individual position in the formation, where a champion can be placed (not to be confused with a bench seat ). The bench (3) is the row of portraits/buttons at the bottom of the screen. Each individual portrait is a bench seat (not to be confused with a formation slot ). There are 12 seats in the game, each containing a unique selection of champions that will be available to you once recruited. You can see your zone (4) progress in the upper right. This is also sometimes referred to as area but this guide will endeavour (and please correct me if I slip) to exclusively use zone , for consistency's sake. Each zone contains a quest (5) that must be completed to unlock the next zone. Usually quests require killing 25 enemies or collecting 25 items dropped from enemies. These items have a 100% drop rate for the same total kill requirement, with the only difference being that you have to mouse over the items to collect them like you do with gold. General Procedure Keep leveling up Bruenor and click damage until you can afford Celeste, then level all three roughly equally until you can unlock Nayeli, and so on. Eventually click damage will stop being useful and you should stop upgrading it. Keep going until zone 50 and reset as soon as you get the option. Tips for this Phase Read your champion abilities. Click on a character portrait on the bench to open their character sheet. Scroll through their abilities and actually read them. This may sound like a very agressive way to start this guide, but you would not believe how many people skip this step. This game is a formation builder at heart and you will not get far if you don't understand how your champions actually work. Pick an MVP and stick with it. All buffs multiply each other, so it's most efficient to have one champion in the formation buffed by every single champion in the formation. This champion will typically be dealing 99% or more (usually so much more it'd be impractical to type out all the 9s) of your total damage in the adventure. This is normal, and the ideal scenario that you're aiming for. Switch to (and learn) scientific notation. The game defaults to "alphabet soup" notation. Press Y (or visit the options menu) to change to scientific notation. It's easier for everyone to understand and important for you to learn early, since the game forces you into it after a certain point. FAQ What about the popup when I hover over a champion? Can I read that instead? No. Or at least, not instead . That popup only contains rudimentary information on two of the champion's abilities and should not be trusted once champions start getting more complex. Take, for example, Bruenor. As you can see, the popup mentions his Inspired and Rally abiliites, but completely neglects to mention his Dwarven Glory and Mithral Hall abilities. Those won't be relevant to you at this phase but in the future you'll want to read the character sheet to get the full picture of what the champion does. What's that green box inside the orange box in the terminology screenshot? A poor choice of color to mark something on a green background. Should I skip any champions? Are the ones in higher seats more powerful? Never skip hiring a champion. You can drag champions to and from the bench to swap out all 12 between your 9 formation slots at almost any time, so don't be afraid to hire them all and experiment. Any champion is better than no champion, and there's no real consistent way to judge how powerful a champion is. At this point, the single largest source of power is replacing your garbage starter champions with shiny new champions that will be better for you. Important Terminology An evergreen champion is a champion not recruited through an event, With the exception of the Tales of the Champions "campaign". A core champion is one of the twelve champions you start with. All other champions are called Event champions. A campaign (1) is an independent set of adventures involving a self-contained story. Tales of the Champions (2) is a unique campaign that functions as a new player catch-up mechanic, allowing access to event champions at any time. This is not a normal campaign despite functioning mostly as one. Time Gates (3) are a way to unlock event champions at any time, similar to Tales of the Champions but with much more choice and much slower availability. A node (4) is a segment of a campaign that displays adventures and their variants. You will see a series of green/red/yellow bars next to any node that still has adventures or variants left to complete, or a red flag hoisted from each node where all adventures and variants are complete, and only free plays are left available. Favor is a meta-progression mechanic. Each campaign (including Tales, Time Gates, and events, as well as some other features) has its own separate favor. Favor doesn't directly affect campaigns other than the one it was earned in (with an exception we'll get to later). Blessings are permanent upgrades bought with favor. Local blessings (1) only affect the campaign the favor was earned in, while the upgrades along the right are tagged as global blessings (2) And affect all adventures. A base adventure is the (usually) restriction-less adventures that are shown in the largest boxes in each node. Once a base adventure is complete it turns into a free play (1) which functions the same but never prompts you to reset as there is no goal, and thus cannot be "completed". Completing a base adventure also unlocks up to three variants (2) which have higher zone requirements and additional restrictions. General Procedure Your main goal right now is to recruit as many new champions as possible. Start by pressing esc and signing up for the newsletter. Use a burner email if you feel like. This will give you a code to unlock Hitch, your first non-core evergreen. Once you've done this, feel free to unsubscribe from the newsletter if you don't care about the weekly chest codes. Now check time gates and see if there's a free time gate available. If there is, pick one and open it. Complete as many of the adventures as you can. It shouldn't be too hard. Now begin progressing the Grand Tour campaign (the first one you started in) by completing the base adventures and skipping as many variants as possible until you unlock the Overdue Rendevous variant. Complete this variant to unlock Drizzt, your second non-core evergreen. At around this same time, you'll unlock Tales of the Champions. This is a catchup mechanic that allows you to recruit a handful of curated event champions. Remember; the champions you recruit here are NOT evergreen. This fact will be important later. Once you've gotten Drizzt, or maybe even beforehand if you feel like it since it unlocks about two adventures earlier, go to Tales of the Champions and do all of the recruitment missions. They're super easy; just a restrictionless run to zone 50. You'll need to do some of the variants to unlock some of the recruits, but it shouldn't be too hard to find one or two here or there that you can do. Now that you've got some new recruits, it's time to start using them. Each champion you've recruited has a defined seat. Once you have recruited a new champion in a seat, you'll see a little double arrow icon in the top left corner of the portrait. Click on that to see all the champions you have in that seat. Click on one of
