Backtalk is a risk/reward conversation mode in Life is Strange: Before the Storm that allows protagonist Chloe Price to use her barbed tongue to provoke or get her way. Forgoing the time travel powers of the first game, Before the Storm instead introduces a new gameplay mechanic that takes the form of a dialogue puzzle. In certain conversations, the option of using Backtalk becomes available as a possible dialogue option. Backtalk has Chloe use her wits to throw insults back at the other character or cleverly try to change their perspective. Backtalk is optional, and even if you fail a sequence, you can just find another method or route. Certain dialogue choices, marked with sweary speech bubbles, trigger a backtalk sequence. It’s a minigame of sorts in which Chloe, without the time-twisting powers of her friend Max, exercises her most potent ability: aggressive sarcasm. Chloe and her target trade insults, and there are ‘correct’ choices to make, picked out by figuring out the response that most directly plays with the previous line of dialogue. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Episode 1 of Life is Strange: Before the Storm begins with Chloe smoking a cigarette in the woods. In the distance, you’ll see an abandoned mill where a band called Firewalk is currently playing. Start walking up towards the mill until you come across a barbed wire fence that says no trespassing. You will have to jump over the fence. Once you jump over the fence, you’ll reach the mill. There will be a bouncer near the entrance. Walk over to him and speak to him. You’ll present your fake I.D. to him but he won’t buy it and won’t let you in. There is a key item you’ll need to interact with before you convince him to let you in. Objective: To get into the punk club. Alternative: If Chloe fails, she must sneak into the punk club using the dog kennel and the back door. "Isn't it past your bed time?" Your bedtime? ✔️ Objective: To get David to be quiet. Alternative: If Chloe fails, she will be forced to listen to David's lecture. "Language! You are way out of line, young lady." French is a language. ✔️ Objective: To get Wells to leave Chloe alone and not have to go to his office after school. Alternative: If Chloe fails, she will have to go to Principal Wells' office after school. "And here I thought your well of witticisms had finally run dry." Principal "Wells." I get it. ✔️ Objective: To get the dragonkin's keys. Alternative: Non-existent. "He steps back, his scaly skin quivering in fear. What do you say?" Meat puppet. ✔️ Objective: To stop Drew from bullying Nathan. Alternative: If Chloe fails, Drew will throw Nathan's portfolio in the fountain. "What the hell did you just say to me?" Back off? ✔️ Objective: To steal the couple's wine bottle without them noticing. Alternative: If Chloe fails, she will steal the couple's wine bottle but will be seen doing so. "What are you waiting for? Go!" Who's the one waiting? ✔️ Chloe, Rachel, and their parents are present in Principal Wells' office over their cutting of school in the previous episode. Depending on dialogue and some choices in the previous episode, Chloe may be expelled and Rachel may lose her role in The Tempest play. Rachel and Chloe agree to meet in the junkyard later. David Madsen and Joyce Price announce that David is moving in which causes Chloe to storm off to the junkyard, where she fixes up a truck, receives a call from Frank asking her to wait there, so he can pick her up and suffers a horrific nightmare involving her father, the forest fire and the raven, Rachel arrives and the two talk about recent events and their plans to leave Arcadia Bay. Rachel eventually leaves Chloe with a bag of clothes. Frank arrives with a passenger and Chloe is inadvertently introduced to Frank's new puppy. Frank asks Chloe to collect a debt from Drew North owed to Damon Merrick, however, things become complicated when Damon himself shows up. Afterwards, Chloe attends The Tempest production at the behest of Rachel with Chloe forced into an unfortunate turn of events. After, Rachel and Chloe further discuss their plans to leave Arcadia Bay and decide to sneak into Rachel's home to gather clothing and other items but are thwarted when Rachel's father, James Amber greets them. He and Rachel's mother, Rose Amber, insist Chloe stays for dinner. Things get heated when James' seeming infidelity is exposed but James himself makes a startling revelation about the mysterious woman. Objective: Make sure that Rachel doesn't get cut from the performance of The Tempest. Success: Chloe will get expelled from Blackwell Academy but Rachel will get off scot-free. Failed: Rachel gets cut from the performance of The Tempest and Chloe gets suspended from Blackwell Academy for the rest of the year. "Ms. Amber has accepted her responsibility." Accept reality. ✔️ Success: Frank will tell Chloe that the woman's name is Sera. Failed: Chloe does not find out the woman's name after Frank gets annoyed and tells her to shut up. "Idiot. I make money by being discreet." I won't sell you out. ✔️ Objective: Convince Skip to let you into the dormitory. Success: Skip will let Chloe pass and run off to inspect the mysterious vehicle in the parking lot. Failed: Skip will let Chloe pass in anger and quits his job after insulting Principal Wells. "I don't think I can. In fact, I think I have to ask you to state your official business, or else vacate Blackwell property." Women's business. ✔️ Objective: Get Victoria to give up the role of Prospera in The Tempest. Success: Rachel will play Prospera after Victoria quits her role. Failed: Rachel will play Prospera after drugging Victoria's tea. "What are you talking about? You think I'm going to take advice from a loser like you?" Lost your mind. ✔️ Objective: Get James to confess to kissing Sera. Success & Fail: Regardless of whether Chloe succeeds or fails, Rachel will smash the table and confront her father about Sera. "Oh? I thought you of all people would be grateful for family, at least." Grateful dead end. ✔️ Chloe Price is at Rachel Amber's house for dinner when Rachel accuses her father of cheating. James Amber reveals that the woman he was with in the park was Rachel's mother, Sera Gearhardt. Sera and James met in high school and fell in love. They had a child together (Rachel) but Sera became a drug addict. James eventually left with the child and made an agreement with Sera to pay her monthly if she agreed to stay away. This worked for 15 years. At the junkyard, Chloe fixes an old truck while she waits for Frank. Rachel shows up, as does Frank - but he isn't alone. Damon Merrick is there and demands to know why Chloe is trying to find Sera. Through conversation, Damon learns that Rachel is the DA's (District Attorney James Amber) daughter. An altercation takes place and Rachel is stabbed. Frank attacks Damon and Chloe rushes Rachel to the hospital. Rachel lives but still wants to find her mother. Rachel's parents are there as well and Chloe tells James what happened. Rachel convinces Chloe to break into her dad's office and gives her a code to disarm the alarm. While there she finds evidence that James lied about a lot of things and that Damon has Sera. Before she can leave, she is caught by Eliot Hampden, who had followed Chloe from the hospital and an argument between the two begins (in which Eliot reveals that he strongly dislikes Rachel and believes she is dangerous). Chloe escapes and drives to the old mill. At the very end of the episode, in the final cinematic, the fate of Rachel Amber is suggested to be similar to that of Victoria and Max's from the first game, where Rachel's phone can be seen ringing inside the underground vault, and the click of a camera can be heard in the background. Objective: Convince Mikey to have Elamon cast a spell that he’s protected from but will kill everyone inc
