Best orchestra album in years, especially the tribal chanting part and songs. Mind-blowing stuff. The game that is attached to it is equallly brilliant too. But jokes aside... I mean, listen. Ace Combat 8 is absolutely ridiculous 90% of it's runtime. But the sheer sincerity of it made it work. This is what makes Ace Combat series so special in our challenging times. It may come off as corny, but it genuinely believes in the message it wants to send: that hope is real, personal sacrifice is worth something, heroism is sincere and humanity is stronger when it reaches past borders to hold hands and strive for peace. This has always been the theme at the heart of Ace Combat. And AC8 excells in this mission in the most bombastic, fun, beautiful and tearful fashion. Yeah, the game about planes go kaboom did it again. Never change, Project Aces.

Mainly just want to leave this review to show that it's possible to run this game on below-minimum specs if you leave all the graphics settings on low. It's pretty smooth, even, albeit a bit ugly. So if you don't have a graphics card with hardware ray tracing, there's still a chance you can play this game. As for the actual game itself, I think the best way to describe it is that it's just such a nice feeling to play it. There's nothing quite like a flight shooting game when it comes to good gaming vibes IMO, and Ace Combat 8 is the best of the bunch.

It's actually so peak. I tell people that while DCS wants to simulate the reality of dogfighting, Ace Combat wants to simulate the fantasy of it. And being a Japanese game, it has a lot of corny dialogue and incredibly obvious story writing but the story is really just a vehicle to create incredibly ridiculous set pieces to satisfy every dogfighting and shonen trope there is. What it lacks in sophisticated writing it completely makes up in pure AURA. It's a fun game that almost revels in how ludicrous it gets.

This game made me feel things I haven't felt from a game in a long time. Every time I thought it had reached its peak, it pushed even further. Honestly, most of the late-game missions could have been the finale and I wouldn't have complained, but it just kept raising the bar. It's rare to play something made with this much love and care. You feel it from start to finish.

Wow..... I'm new to the Ace Combat series with my intro being AC7. As much as I enjoyed Skies Unknown, Wings of Theve blows it out of the water. The gameplay, the VA, story, the promotional mini series and extras, the MUSIC, everything is just wonderful. Its so refreshing to see a game release complete. No delays, no missing content, not buggy. Project Aces so obviously put heart and soul into this game. AC7 may have gotten me into the series, but AC8 cemented me as a fan. o7

While I understand many people have issues with the multiplayer, crashes, or zero's preorder inclusion, my priority has always been the campaign. This is far and away the greatest Ace Combat game in the series, a title I often jokingly gave to Project Wingman, but this blows that and everything else out of the water. The music, the characters, the gameplay, the sound design; everything is the best that PA has ever done, and while there are some flaws, this has quickly and become one of my favorite games of all time.

This is the best mid 2000s "inarguably anti war, but military hardware is sick as hell" anime since the mid 2000s Speaking as a campaign only person here, as I have no intention of getting deep into the multiplayer in any way. If you plan on digging into the multiplayer side of this game, then please read other reviews that have a greater focus on that to get a more complete picture. I've been hearing about the Ace Combat series for a good chunk of my life. The people who love it have always been passionate and vocal about that passion, and back in Ye Olde Dayse, whenever somebody would post a Greatest Video Game Music Of All Time thead on a forum, at least one Ace Combat track would come up. (it was usually Zero, or Liberation of Gracemeria, or...) but I've never actually properly played one of them, despite having some exposure to the series from afar. This was my first Ace Combat game. The only words that seem to do it any sort of justice are 'spiritual experience.' It was hectic to play at first but by mission 17 or so everything was pure flow state and any game that can consistently put you there is special. The beauty of Ace Combat, the secret sauce that brings the entire dish together, really is the gameplay and how much it asks of you. It is not HARD in the sense that the game is not ever really trying to hurt you or make you struggle, but it IS a game that requires you to be On. Every mission has at least one task that you must keep in the back of your mind at all times while simultaneously overwhelming you with a bunch of stuff that you don't NEED to deal with, but also yes you do, but also if you focus on the small things you WILL lose the mission sooner rather than later. It feels like juggling plates while permanently going at least twice the speed of sound, flipping through targets of opportunity, hearing the beeping tone of a confirmed lock while at the apex of a midair U turn and praying to the Gods of IR Guidance that those two HVAA missiles you just sent out without a clear visual find their targets because you do not have time to stop and watch or correct your aim. And then, eight seconds later while you are doing a strafing yaw against a line of ground targets, they hit - your HUD flashes up the HIT -> DESTROYED box for a brief moment as you pull a high G turn to pitch up and away from the rapidly oncoming ground, and you feel like the most powerful person on the planet. For those fifteen seconds, the world stops turning, and the only thing that matters is you, what is in your crosshairs, and the great, unending blue sky before you. And then it happens again. And again. And again. And not once does it lose its impact. The story is Anime ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥(very very affectionate) but it completely won me over with its earnestness and, upon finishing it, shocked me with how much depth the worldbuilding and the individual characters had upon post credits analysis. I was grabbed in a way I have not been by something in recent memory, and I cried several times, something I pretty much never do to any sort of media anymore because my heart is a shriveled husk - it felt like every single mission had at least one moment that felt like a hit to the stomach either because of something utterly sick as hell was happening or something was breaking my heart. The best missions had both, and the best missions were also the majority of the game. (It is freaking ridiculous how much emotion they can engender with a simple "Yes/No" prompt) The soundtrack cannot even begin to be glazed up enough. It is truly next level. It's going to get ignored at GOTY discussions but don't be fooled; this is the one. Its integration of the music into gameplay is unmatched and every single mission made it clear that they REALLY worked hard to make sure that the music and Sick Stuff Occurring synced up perfectly and they miraculously maintained that all the way through. Never once did it feel like they were resting on their laurels. Never once did it feel like, for just one day, they wouldn't put 130% into trying to get you to love playing Ace Combat as much as they love making Ace Combat. And I do love Ace Combat now. Love is the only word for it. When I think of this game, when I think of how it made me feel, the incredible highs and the harrowing lows, it's extraordinarily difficult to find the correct place to start or the right words to impress upon somebody else just how *powerfully* this resonated within me. And somehow they did it with 90% of the story being told exclusively through radio chatter. If you like action games and melodramatic stories presented with a surprising amount of depth and respect and an overwhelming amount of unashamed earnestness for what it is doing, then play it. If there is even a chance that you might enjoy it, then I BEG you to take the plunge. If you are the right person, and this game finds you at the right time, it has the power to irrevocably change you. Up here, high among the clouds, even a dead heart can stir....... and we'll keep going until these skies belong to everyone.
