Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2

1 / 6

Alien: Fireteam Elite 2 — The Bugs Have Won When I bought Alien: Fireteam Elite 2, I expected to hunt bugs. The developers, however, have generously introduced an entirely new faction: game bugs. And unfortunately, they may be the most dangerous enemy in the game. Let us begin with the campaign Are the dialogues corny? Yes. Is the story particularly strong? Not especially. Do I care? Honestly, no. I did not arrive expecting Shakespeare in space. I came here to shoot enormous quantities of Xenomorphs, dismantle hostile robots and generally contribute to a substantial reduction in the local extraterrestrial population. The problem is that the game occasionally seems determined to prevent me from doing even that. And if I weren't already a huge Alien fan, I genuinely don't think I would touch this thing with a ten-foot stick. So what exactly is wrong? Well. Please take a seat: - Some perks simply don't work. Others work perfectly well until you decide to play online with other human beings, at which point they occasionally appear to reconsider their contractual obligations. - The new Horde mode is particularly impressive. Not mechanically. Administratively. Rewards don't always work properly, and progression appears to stop at Wave 50. Reach Wave 55 and the game can replace the rewards you previously earned with... nothing. Which is certainly one way of encouraging players to push themselves. “Congratulations on exceeding expectations. We have removed your salary.” An innovative motivational system. - Then we have the classes. Theoretically, different classes should provide different strengths, abilities and reasons to experiment. In practice, some abilities are so weak that using them feels less like combat and more like making a suggestion. Meanwhile, the Specialist can access perks from every class. At which point one begins to question why the other classes have attended the meeting. If one class is allowed to wander through everybody else's perk trees collecting whatever it likes, class identity becomes somewhat ceremonial. There are also several smaller design decisions which gradually begin nibbling away at one's sanity - You cannot interact with or pick up certain things unless your weapon is completely reloaded. Why? I have no idea. Apparently opening a box while possessing seventeen rounds instead of twenty is beyond the physical capabilities of a Colonial Marine. - There is no text chat. An interesting choice for a cooperative online game in the year 2026. Perhaps communication was judged to provide an unfair advantage? Then there is the networking - The game can freeze and eject everyone except the host. Fine. Things happen. You would naturally assume there is an option to rejoin the lobby. There isn't. So if the game itself removes you from your friends' session, it will then stand at the door and calmly explain that readmission is not company policy. Excellent. - The enemies have also developed several abilities which I don't remember from the films. Xenomorphs can become trapped inside walls. Others disappear beneath the map. Elite Xenos occasionally teleport around when moving quickly enough. I originally assumed this was lag. Eventually I concluded that Weyland-Yutani has apparently succeeded in weaponising quantum mechanics. - There are also sections of the campaign where you can simply fall through the floor and die instantly. No enemy required. The architecture itself has joined the hunt. - Even the statistics menu is unreliable. Lifetime statistics don't always calculate correctly. Some weapon-stat sections are incomplete. Precision weapons appear to have been forgotten entirely in places. Which is oddly appropriate, considering precision also appears to have been omitted from portions of the game's development. And the irritating thing is that underneath all of this, there is a game I want to like Shooting Xenomorphs is fun. Building characters is fun. The basic idea works. When everything behaves itself, you occasionally catch glimpses of exactly the game I wanted. Then somebody falls through the floor, a perk stops functioning, an Elite Xeno teleports across the room, the lobby collapses and Horde mode decides that your rewards have become theoretical. And we begin again. I could continue listing problems. Quite comfortably, actually. But I suspect we all have responsibilities. Final verdict At the moment, my recommendation is simple: wait. Not for a small discount. I'm talking 70–80% off territory. Even if you're a major Alien fan, I would wait until the developers have had time to fix the game. And considering the current size of the player base, my greater concern is whether they will be given enough time to do so before support begins quietly disappearing. There is a genuinely enjoyable cooperative shooter buried inside Alien: Fireteam Elite 2. Unfortunately, at present, retrieving it requires fighting through rather more bugs than advertised. And none of them bleed acid.

One step forward, multiple steps back: I have played 50 hours on AFTE2. I have played nearly 200 hours on AFTE1. I waited until I completed most of the content before posting any type of review/comment. I have to say I only want this game to succeed but as of now, I do not suggest you buy this game for these reasons: -numerous bugs. I will not list them all but here are a few: cannot pick up items such as med kits without switching weapons or firing, weird graphical glitches, doors not opening because of stuck enemies, sound issues, not actually getting rewards such as cosmetics/attachments/etc. It seems they did not do enough testing and rushed the release. -lack of official reviews. I find it disturbing that no major media publications have even reviewed this game and its already out. It is like its being blacklisted or embargoed. -horrific NPC chatter. It will make you mute your game. Whoever wrote it should throw themselves off a cliff for publishing something so awful. -lack of immersion. Cookie cutter home base design. Ai written background lore for the weapons/intel. Budget version home base. No shooting range to test guns. Poorly developed characters. Poorly designed missions. They did not design the missions as well as the first game. None are memorable. Even the queen fight. You wont want to repeat the missions for fun or even to grind. I just stuck with horde mode to level everything so I wouldnt have to deal with so many bugs/crappy cut scenes. -not enough content to justify increased price. cookie cutter effort was made to make this game. This game needs a lot more additional content to justify an increased price. You should only buy this game if you are BOTH, a fan of the IP AND enjoyed AFTE1. AFTE2 is a shell of the original. More expensive and the only thing noteworthy that they added is instead of 3 players per mission, its 4. The specialist is a joke. You get a class that can do everything and makes the other classes obsolete. The graphics look the same. There are some added effects when you fire some guns. Honestly, thats about it. Until they at least fix the game breaking and multitude of annoying bugs, I would sort of suggest anyone buy this game. Honestly, I doubt the devs will fix this game and I have a feeling they will abandon it. It is a shame because AFTE1 was a diamond in the rough. Idk what the hell happened to the sequel, but it is a shame. If the devs manage to fix the game, I will modify my review. Until then, I would wait for a sale or just wait another 5 years for AFTE3, if it even gets made. RIP

So ive seen a couple reviews mentioning the game only has 5 missions. the game has a list of what looks like 5 missions. when you unlock them, its 5 chapters with 3 missions each. the game actually has 15 missions not 5 as far as the gameplay itself goes its basically the first game with some more customization, 4P coop and more enemy variety. havent had any bugs, no issues with online playing with friends though it IS p2p so that will vary depending on who you match with. is it perfect? no its not. but if you liked the first one youll like the second. Edit: as other reviewers said there is some stuttering noticeable when you open objective doors or advance into new story segments. feels like the game only loads each map segment as you go through or something.

I was a huge fan of the first game, so I'm surprised and disappointed that Fireteam Elite 2 released in such an unpolished state. The gameplay is mostly executed well, but the literal bugs need to be fixed ASAP: * characters/enemies sliding around * doors locking characters out from progressing forward in levels * random controls getting disabled (vaulting, picking up items, etc.) * missions refusing to load after everyone readies up * lack of true drop-in Happy to change my review to something more positive once the issues are addressed.

I went into this a fan of the original and this feels like a step backwards in a lot of ways. 1. The gameplay. It's exactly the same as the original. Literally nothing is different. And that's a shame because there was a ton of room to innovate. The new classes don't really add very much and the ones from the original still do exactly what they did before. Some new abilities or tactics would have really helped this feel like a new experience but sadly it's very dull and feels like overpriced DLC. 2. The "story". The story is your typical Aliens story with the evil corporation doing experiments and blah blah blah. It honestly feels like a madlib with a completely forgettable plot. The missions are also incredibly dull. It's just go through a linear level, stop at points to fight waves of enemies, and then move on. Granted, that's what the first game was, but there are no big set pieces, no big surprises, and nothing to really blow you away. The first game brought in stuff like the black goo and the engineers and integrated it really well. It felt like a solid addition to the lore and universe of Alien. That is no on offer here. 2. The characters. The characters and the writing are god awful. The majority of them are gassed up mids playing tough. Seriously, there are only two male characters and one of them is an idiot. Captain Ko is perhaps one of the most annoying characters ever introduced. She's some ultra badass and talks tough but really she's just annoying. They also have her doing Marine stuff when she's a pilot. The whole hotshot snarky pilot act fit her character in the first game but they upgraded her to be a major character and it just doesn't work at all. Not even close. They also all refer to you as "hotshot" all the time and I swear the writing is nonstop cringey jokes. Nobody in Aliens told jokes like this. There was humor, but it was actually funny. Here it's Reddit-level humor or Marvel movie dialogue. It doesn't fit the Alien universe and whoever wrote this should never work in games again. 3. It should have been $30-40. Asking $50 for this is way too much and it's going to hurt the game's success. You would have had more sales at a lower pricepoint but they went for the extra $$$. I thought the price meant more content and a better experience, but the game actually has less content than the original and is worse by about every metric. I am not having fun playing this and I'm a die-hard Aliens fan. How they managed to fumble the bag so badly is really beyond me. 4. Music and sound. The sound design is awful and besides the motion tracker ping they took none of the iconic sounds from the films. The pulse rifle doesn't sound like the movie at all and to unlock the original one you have to grind up to level ten. I still have probably two or three more hours of playtime before I get there. The weapons also don't feel like they have any impact as enemies don't react or make noises when hit. A huge part of Aliens is the sound and music and this is another area where they fumbled badly. The soundtrack sounds like someone farting through a French horn. 5. To pad the gameplay they put anything you would want to equip like new cosmetics or weapons behind the steep walls of fort grindmore. You will be grinding for literal hours just to get the option to buy more weapons and then you'll need the credits to get them so that's more grinding. None of the cosmetics are unlockable at the beginning and the engineer is the only one that looks kinda sorta like a colonial marine. This is another shame because I thought their take on the armor in the first game was really cool but everything in this one so far looks like slop. They won't even let you preview cosmetics, you have to unlock them first to see what they look like. All in all I'm pretty disappointed. I'm a huge Aliens fan and love supporting games where we get to see the Marines but this is just a lazy, soulless, boring game where the first one was genuinely good if a bit repetitive. They needed to up their game for the sequel, especially after charging more for it, and they completely missed the mark. Wait for a sale before you buy, if you get this game at all.

The long short of it is this... decent game, Indecent price. Completed the campaign, maxed a class, played around with a few others. This game is competing with titles like Vermintide/Darktide, L4D(2)... hell, its predecessor which goes on sale for like $5 my local currency. This game, after tax, was $75. No DLC bs, just base price. This game is, simply, not on the level of any of those games. It does some things differently, its not 'bad' outside some performance issues right now. But it costs significantly more than significantly better products in the same space. In the case of Vermintide 2, for all it and Fatsharks short comings, it was a solid game that now has years of free and paid content updates and regularely sales for $5 as well. Im not saying this game is worth $5. A patch or two and I'd happily give it a $30-$40 value. But 65... over 70 all in all. Not even including the wallet scrubbing editions! Wtf is this nonsense... --- Apparently responding in the comments wasnt enough! "Oh boy... ok, house cleaning. I explicitly say "MY LOCAL CURRENCY" so its clear to all the American defaultists that I am NOT using USD and somehow a few of you still got lost. I will say that $30USD would still have been a decent starting point. Lack of regional pricing on lower priced titles is 'less' of an issue but an already silly price ONTOP of no regional pricing is just stupid. ...and yeah kirk of course I am,(sorta, its about 8ish hours over, still...) I paid for it. Did you think I was going to record myself peformativly burning my PC in protest like some clout chasing ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥? Pass. " "This game, after tax, was $75." 64.99 + Tax(8.45) = 73.4 O_O
