The genre classic turn-based RPG that may not appeal to everyone most players likely focus on its primary selling point "the story". The time-traveling narrative, world exploration, and classic, familiar combat mechanics evoke a genuine sense of nostalgic. Beyond the story, features like New Game+ and over ten different endings offer significant replayability for an RPG. The game also boasts charming 2D visuals and an orchestral soundtrack that perfectly complements the adventurous atmosphere. Although the gacha system has been removed, the developers sell additional characters via separate paid DLC packs. There are still some minor issues typical of ports, such as the lack of ultrawide screen support (resulting in black bars on the sides) and inconsistent voice acting quality. Additionally, the early game's pacing may feel a bit slow for players accustomed to modern RPG.

About 80% alright, but there are some asterisks involved. Some major improvements. Some serious negatives worth noting. I am trying to be as comprehensive as possible, so much that the devs themselves could read this and take notes from it. AND THE CONTROLLER STOPPED WORKING AGAIN.... OF COURSE IT DID. In Opening: "Another Eden: The Cat Beyond Time and Space" was a rare example of a freemium game with a fantastic 90s style JRPG storyline, thanks largely to Masato Kato, whose works you should be familiar with if you loved that genre from that era. It had many great ideas, but it was bogged down by freemium content and now I am glad this pox is bring removed to make this more refined product. Sadly, I should advise that Another Eden Begins doesn't dig in as well as other into abandoning its freemium mindset, and that bothers me. Others such as the Megaman Online made Offline and the like all suffer similar problems, however, that one made different mistakes, namely it refused to rework the basic elements to make them more enjoyable as classic 2D Megaman content. This should be expected to some extent, but thank goodness Another Eden Begins didn't do us dirty on the most important things, so let me break it down for you. 1: They Cut the Pointless Grind and Wasteful Content Another Eden Begins cut much of the terrible grind you would encounter in the original version. This should be seen as a massive plus. Weapons are easier to acquire with money rather than grinding over and over for drops to use to forge them, although drops exist for that as well. I've yet to run into Another Dungeons, and I don't think they exist in this version, or at least not in the same way, but the door is still there, maybe serving a different purpose. No Tsubura Gems, no Manifest Weapon grinding, no tome grind, gacha grind, and other material grind is simplified and serves a new purpose as an alternate way to get weapons other than money. Such grind was used to waste your time, and was terrible in the original. This allows me to concentrate on the story and only the story. But there's more to this. 2: Script Fixing One of the major problem with the original freemium game was awful, and I mean just the worst dialog script I've ever seen. It wasn't merely that the scenes went on for far too long; trust me, I've played tons of games and survived plenty of text walls, but this was different. The problem in these scenes was constant redundant dialog, for whatever reason constantly repeating itself as if we forgot what happened 15 minutes ago. In the original, scenes would basically go "Bad Guy A is doing Bad Thing B" and then they would go look around and say "Oh, here's where he did Bad Thing B" and then some guy would show up and say "I'm Bad Guy C, and Bad Guy A is planning something" and when the parties ask "why did am Bad Guy A do Bad Thing B" they get a response "As I am Bad Guy C, I can guarantee Bad Guy A is definitely planning something with Bad Thing B and you'll be shocked by Evil Plan D when it comes to fruition". Too many story moments were an absolute interstate pileup of bad dialog. THEY LARGELY FIXED THIS, AND THANK ALMIGHTY GOD. 3: Day One Locked in Game DLC As for missteps, there's already $50 worth of DLC on launch day, of which only $20 of the purchasable content is playable, and the DLC doesn't have English voice acting, which wouldn't be too bad, except we have to wonder why this decision on a $5 per character bundle. The price is simply too high for this content. I honestly think it wouldn't be bad priced at $1 per character, maybe $2 if you let the Season Pass for all 10 characters be $15, but that's pushing it. To make matters worse, not all of these characters are yet released, so purchase is entirely on faith. As for the characters, they all coincide with storylines yet to be released into this game's unreleased sections from the freemium version, which can only leave me guessing, and raises questions. This leads me to believe some of these characters might be paid early releases possibly with that voicework done then, but this further raises questions as to the legitimacy of the pricing and the plans for AEB. People will buy this game because people prefer the 'pay once' purchase model, so the devs not doing their best on this is worrisome. They need to be more honest about their longterm plans, because I've been waiting for this for some time, and never spent so much as a penny in the freemium dumpster despite my time playing it. Since these side stories are not released, I can only wonder. However, I did notice there are places for weapons in the Codex, which say "DLC" right there marked. That is an eyesore constantly remind me that the devs didn't care enough to treat the DLC as secondary content, instead making it a switch to flip on or off. 4: Characters Better than Original, massive improvement from original To understand the party members in context, each party member in the freemium game and this version both seem to function similarly. Not 100% on a 1:1 comparison in combat, nor 1:1 on how character quests operate. Instead, AEB is superior in this regard. The bloat was completed gutted, refining them to perfection. Storylines are more efficient and poignant, ensuring they don't drag forever. Furthermore, stat issues from freemium light/shadow points are resolved via your standard levelups. Really good, combat is improved via an entirely new system involving each character having special moves that charge via certain actions such as certain effects or attack types being used in battle, and characters have new movesets that are much more balanced than in the original freemium which relied on power creep and other things to keep battles interesting but bogged everything down in tedium. Lastly, there's the difference in how character quests are used. For those new to this, in the original each character generally has 3 personal quests, and each of these quests is generally about 3 to 5 stops before completion. In that version, these quests were quite tedious, characters were obnoxious beyond reason and grated on your nerves, with unskippable cutscenes. Each quest might take 20 minutes, but felt like an hour because of how bad they were. To make matters worse, since it was a freemium game you got the character in gacha and then had to do the troublesome quests. However, AEB polishes them up more than just a bit. The characters are less annoying, introduced naturally in the world as you explore, the poorly written waifu/husbando antics are turned down and tamed, quests are simpler, cutscenes don't have constant redundant dialog, and I legitimately found them charming because of all these improvements. 5: Incomplete Content; a big spot of potential contention There are tons of crossover content in the freemium game that will likely never arrive even if we keep waiting. Sure, there's the fact that AE had 4 Main Story sections, and AEB is only section 1, but there's more, including tons of optional storylines that act as a sort of extended universe, but also tons of promotional content. This promotional content includes, but is not limited to: crossovers from Chrono Cross, multiple 'Tales of' series games, Persona 5, King of Fighters, Final Fantasy 9, Octopath Traveler, and the Atelier games. All of these crossovers added new party members from those games, even thought their content quality was mixed and the FF9 is now no longer accessible. I was able to have a party of Kid, Velvet, Vivi, and Harle, send them into battle, and beat down evil. While such storylines were often fanfiction level in quality, some of that content will be missed, and I am legitimately upset we surely won't be seeing it in this version. Personally, I would almost always find uses for Kid and Harle due to their buff/debuff potential, and now wonder what will happen. Well, I think that's pretty much everything serious, for now. I'm not yet done playing this release.

Much improved version of the gacha game, with new higher fidelity graphics, all gacha removed, new crafting system, and voice acting. I'm really enjoying it so far.

This is an amazing way to preserve what was already an amazing game. Everything is enhanced, from improved graphics to full voice acting. As someone who played and loved the original, I'm very impressed with this standalone release. This version allows people to just enjoy the game fully rebalanced for a regular jrpg experience without gacha mechanics. I hope begins truly is just the beginning and the rest of the original game's story will get the same treatment, so we can experience more of Another Eden's brilliant story and endearing characters in this format.
