Short game 4hours and can be less, but interesting mechanics. Going Slow its a RNG point than make this game different, and yes, its so "small contentent" in game, but this game its like a trial to test for the owners, that they can do more and better if they let them ( and money ofc )

Aris Arcanum takes the familiar action roguelite formula and gives it a distinctive identity through occult magic, cosmic horror, and a setting built around the dangerous pursuit of knowledge. Developed by Broken Cane and published by indie.io, it follows Clyde, a gifted magician connected to the mysterious discipline of Atramancy. His journey takes him through the once-grand library of Aris, where forbidden experimentation has transformed a center of learning into a hostile maze filled with corrupted scholars, unnatural creatures, and magical forces that were never meant to be controlled. At the center of the story is Ink, a strange substance that dramatically increases magical power while corrupting those who interact with it. Clyde's mentor, Mira, has fallen victim to its influence, giving the adventure a personal purpose beyond simply surviving another roguelite dungeon. This setup works especially well because the narrative and gameplay reinforce each other. Every descent into the library feels like another attempt to understand a disaster caused by scholars who pushed their research too far. The deeper Clyde travels, the more Aris shifts from recognizable Victorian-inspired halls and archives into bizarre spaces influenced by forces beyond ordinary reality. Spellcraft is the defining gameplay feature. Rather than relying on a small collection of fixed attacks, Clyde can manipulate Ink and combine magical abilities to create different builds during each run. Thousands of possible combinations are promised, making experimentation an important part of progression. One run might produce a highly effective combination of abilities, while another forces the player to adapt to less familiar tools. This unpredictability gives repeated attempts a purpose beyond simply memorizing enemy placements. Learning how magical effects interact and discovering combinations that suit a preferred approach become major parts of mastering the game. Combat emphasizes caution as much as raw magical strength. Clyde may be an accomplished magician, but he is not portrayed as an agile warrior capable of effortlessly escaping every dangerous situation. His physical limitations make positioning and timing especially important. Enemies must be studied, openings recognized, and spells used intelligently rather than thrown around without consideration. The Souls-like influence is noticeable in this deliberate approach to encounters, although the roguelite structure means that failure also becomes part of long-term progression. Death sends Clyde back and removes much of what was acquired during an individual expedition, but progress is not completely erased. Knowledge functions as an important persistent resource, allowing discoveries and experience from previous attempts to contribute toward future success. It is an appropriate progression mechanic for a game about a scholar exploring a forbidden library. Even an unsuccessful run can teach the player something about enemy behavior, environmental dangers, spell combinations, or the mysteries surrounding Aris. Visually, the game benefits from its hand-drawn presentation and isometric perspective. The library is not limited to dusty bookshelves and ordinary reading rooms. Its environments expand into laboratories, gardens, observatories, corrupted archives, and increasingly surreal locations that suggest the boundaries of the physical world are breaking apart. Gothic architecture mixes with supernatural and cosmic imagery, creating an atmosphere that becomes stranger as the player progresses. This gradual transformation gives exploration a stronger sense of discovery and helps communicate how thoroughly the Ink has changed the institution. The narrative also provides more context than a purely mechanical roguelite would require. Clyde's past, Mira's condition, Atramancy, and the history of the scholars provide mysteries to uncover alongside character progression. The theme of knowledge being simultaneously valuable and dangerous is particularly effective. Becoming more powerful requires experimentation with the very force responsible for the catastrophe, placing Clyde in an interesting position where salvation and corruption originate from the same source. There are some potential barriers for players who prefer immediately accessible action. A large spell-combination system naturally requires experimentation, and not every build will be equally satisfying. Clyde's intentionally restrained mobility may also feel unusual compared with extremely fast roguelites where constant dodging and movement dominate combat. Repeated trips through the same overarching location will ultimately depend on strong encounter and environmental variety to remain engaging over extended play. For players who enjoy gradually understanding complex systems, however, these qualities can become strengths rather than drawbacks. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. Aris Arcanum ultimately stands out because its mechanics, protagonist, progression, and setting all revolve around the same central concept. Magic provides enormous power, knowledge provides lasting advancement, and both come with risks. Its combination of customizable spellcraft, deliberate combat, roguelite progression, hand-drawn environments, and cosmic-horror storytelling gives it an appealing personality of its own. For players willing to experiment with builds and repeatedly descend into a mysterious supernatural library, it offers a promising mixture of tactical action and dark magical discovery. Rating: 7/10
