BW is notorious for being hated online. It's a platformer that comes from the minds of Yuji Naka (ex big shot from Sega) and Square Enix. You control one of the 2 characters (nameless female or male character), explore 12 chapters that each have 2 acts initially. Act 3 is unlocked after completing the story. An act consists of one level, each chapter also has one boss fight after act 2. The gimmicks of the game are having 80 outfits with unique moves and taking care of cute pets in the hub area. Let's start with what the game does right. It has a lot of content, each of the 12 chapters have completely different aesthetics, the bosses are unique and the cutscenes look gorgeous with the famous Square Enix CGI full motion videos. The game's soundtrack is also excellent, I'm reminded of Kingdom Hearts games a lot. it might be the same composer. The gameplay can feel great at the best of times, when you have different outfits trying to figure out where to use them, trying to find the collectibles and exploring the environments. The pet system is genuinely awesome with how you can feed them different coloured crystals (?), they turn into different colours which can help you differently in levels (such as certain pets being more helpful with fights or finding items for you), how you can hatch new eggs and how they can be used to build a huge structure in the middle of the hub area. The game has tons of issues with the fundamentals and it's heart breaking because a lot could have easily been avoided with better design decisions. Let's start with the 2 main ones, outfits not assigned to different buttons and outfits being consumed. With the first one, you can bring 3 outfits with you at a time. You swap between them with the triggers even though you have different buttons that all activate the same outfit (why?!). It's clumsy and it wastes a lot of time, I can live with it if it was the only problem. But outfits being consumables and losing them with one hit is the biggest sin. You better stock up on many of the same outfits and be prepared to lose them after falling by accident or being touched by an enemy. The game has massive issues with controls, responsiveness and the enemies respawn in the same spots after a while, too quickly in my opinion. That issue ruined a lot of the game for me. It's when you complete the story and unlock the best outfits that you can avoid those issues most of the time. But by then, it's too late. The game also has awful mini-games found randomly and the QTE segments can also be very annoying and repetitive. The game would have been better off without those mini-games, and I say this as someone who tends to like them usually. Honestly, there are too many other issues but I'm going to leave it here to keep this paragraph reasonably long. Balan Wonderworld feels misguided. It's clear that it received a huge budget but a lot of it has been used on unnecessary things. I see the brilliance and fun at times, but there were other times it really pissed me off. There is a huge potential in a better game that is more focused and better designed. I don't think the game we currently have is worth experiencing to get to the good part, unless you're too curious for your own good. It's not as bad as what many say, but that doesn't mean you need to play it. It took me over 41 hours to complete the game and get all the achievements. Most of the achievements come naturally but you still need to do a few specific ones that aren't too hard, just time consuming.
