Boreal Tenebrae Act 0

1 / 8

Boreal Tenebrae: Act 0 is an atmospheric narrative adventure set in the strange, dying town of Tamarack Narrows —a place of disappearing industry, simmering resentment, flickering CRTs, and a crimson aurora that stains the sky like a wound.

You play through the interwoven perspectives of Sarah Walker , her sister Bree , and the people trapped in this remote northern community on the night everything unravels. A centennial celebration meant to save the town becomes the site of a surreal catastrophe, when an unknown visitor arrives promising salvation—and delivering something far older, and far worse.

Inspired by late-90s analog media, fixed-angle exploration games, and the dream-logic horror that defines the full Boreal Tenebrae series, Act 0 blends PSX-style visuals , lo-fi video textures , and narrative-driven exploration to create a world that feels both intimate and unsettling.

This is the night the story begins. This is the night Tamarack Narrows changed forever.

• A standalone prequel that enriches and expands the world of Boreal Tenebrae: Act 1 while remaining accessible to new players.

• Multi-perspective narrative following Sarah, Bree, Nicole, Sam, and the townsfolk as their lives intersect during one disastrous community event.

• Analog-horror aesthetic : CRT distortion, VHS noise, infrared footage, and PS1-inspired visuals woven directly into gameplay.

• Exploration of a collapsing prairie town , from liquor stores and empty streets to church basements and industrial yards.

• Cinematic storytelling : Fixed-camera scenes, interactive dialogue, and surreal sequences bursting into the real world.

• A mystery rooted in community, class struggle, and cosmic intrusion , setting the stage for the events of Act 1.

• Atmospheric soundtrack that shifts between warm nostalgia and unnerving dissonance.

Incredible cinematic novel brought down by the few sections of the game you actually play. There are two mandatory puzzles, which aren't hard, but you figure out what to do quickly and then struggle against the game anyway cause you missed an explorable space hiding behind the camera, or you forgot the character swapping mechanic cause its mostly used to have a cat knock things over. The other sections of gameplay are "linear" combat arenas where you wander down hallways, which sometimes diverge briefly into a dead end with extra items for survival. These sections have a lot of mechanics, but they don't really seem to matter until you hit the 2nd boss fight, and then it only matters cause unlike every other enemy, including the first boss, going down in 1-2 hits, the 2nd boss tanks so many hits you wonder if you're even doing damage. The combat's feedback is lacking, though those sections are pretty atmospheric. Despite feeling like you could cut out all the game play, I still recommend this, for the visuals are stunning and the story being told has me interested to go check out Act 1.

A short and thrilling story of a eventful evening in a isolated small town. The visual and audio design are genuinely one of the best I've seen from an indie story game. Can't wait to see more!

Back in 2022, we covered a rather interesting indie title that impressed us with its Lynchian storytelling and lo-fi artstyle. Its abrupt ending was disappointing, but I was confident that we would eventually see the second half. Four years later and Boreal Tenebrae is back… although it’s not here to finish off the story it left behind. Rather, this is a standalone prequel that reintroduces us to this world and helps enrich it with more lore and character growth. Not quite the resolution I was hoping for, but I was still excited to delve back into Tamarack Marrows once more! BACK TO BOREALITY Being set before the events of the original, the small town of Tamarack Marrows is a different place. The static hasn’t (as yet) infected the town, Bree’s sister Sarah has not gone missing, and everything seems just about normal for somewhere with animals that walk around acting like humans. None of that is important though, as this game only really serves to put the town in the position it was at the start of the original game. During the course of the game you’ll be playing as Sarah and her sister, as well as Sam, Nicole, … and a cat that can talk to ghosts, as they see their town fall apart after a strange unsettling visitor causes a community event to go disastrously wrong. Boreal Tenebrae Act 0: Sundowning retains the VHS aesthetic and 4:3 aspect ratio (which can be changed to 16:9, if preferred) of its predecessor, and helps give the game that ‘enhanced PSX’ look to make its events all the more haunting. It may not feel like a necessary choice early on as the introductory segments are surprisingly rather sedate, but once things start getting unsettling you can see that this is the perfect visual style to complement it. For the most part, the game is focused largely on its narrative, with conversations and minor environmental actions making up most of your time. With such strong writing and characterisation, it works really well, and you can tell that the developer hasn’t forgotten about the characters from their previous title. They all behave exactly as you remember, and interactions even triggered memories of the original that I had otherwise forgotten. What I like the most is that it rewards players who have played the original by connecting to things you may remember, but are absolutely inessential to enjoying this as an experience in its own. It’s not all dialogue though, as the game also works as a rudimentary point and click puzzle adventure. Each character has their own item menu (as well as their own special skills, encouraging you to occasionally switch between them) and the odd puzzle can be solved in order to progress. Its puzzles are largely there to help make the gameplay more compelling to those that need more than a narrative to enjoy a game, but are never particularly difficult enough to be a roadblock to progress. The only difficulty can occasionally be down to not knowing where to go, even though you know exactly where you need to go, due to the game’s fixed camera perspective and lo-fi artstyle. One early example has you needing to open a door with a code, but I couldn’t see where the door was. After realising that the camera would only allow me to see two sides of the building, I ended up just guessing where I thought the door should be – which turned out to be correct. A little more visual clarity in some small areas could help refine things a little, but such frustrations tend not to last longer than a minute or two so are relatively minor in the long run. Coming in at a slightly longer length and a slightly higher price tag (although still incredibly cheap), Boreal Tenebrae Act 0: Sundowning is a great return to a tormented town that I had almost forgotten about. With it playing perfectly on the Steam Deck too, there’s no reason not to pick this one up – and hey, maybe we’ll see Act 2 at some point too!

while some of the mechanics are a little clunky and its easy to get caught in a glitch, i love the story telling and the visuals are incredible. edit: after having to replay it twice to get all the achievements, its become a lot more clear how clunky the mechanics are. i didn't realize i kept dying to bosses because my fear level was rapidly draining my health, while hitboxes are still hard to get sometimes, watching that fear level helped a ton with the nightmare segments. i wanted to play this with my switch controller and it wouldn't let me. for someone who never uses keyboard controls, it was hell trying to get used to everything i do wish it was also a bit more forgiving on the timing of things. i forgot to do one item exchange and had to replay the game for a second time. glad i did though because the collect all the mailbox items achievement didn't set off in the second play through. since it is a prequel, i get not being able to do all the same time bendy exploration the act 1 had, so hopefully this issue will be isolated to act 0. i am excited to see what more comes from this story. i love nicole so much.
