Old Gems, New Enlightenment Metroidvania has been my favorite sub-genre of games for many years. Even since my first experience with Hollow Knight back in June 2017, I've been lost in the rabbit hole of this particular type of action platformer. Yet when I look back, I realize that I have never played any games from the Metroid series and the Castlevania series. I may know some references metroidvanias are inspired by thanks to the internet. I never experience them myself. So, in preparation for the upcoming new mainline Castlevania, I try the Dominus Collection, and surprisingly, I have a blast playing it through. The three games in this collection may share the same theme and design philosophy. The small twists in gameplay help them stand out from each other. Obviously, these three games suffer from the problems they're born with, but it is still a fun experience, and I highly recommend this collection to anyone who wants to grasp the inspiration behind half of the metroidvania. Things I Like About Castlevania Dominus Collection: [*]Save/Load Whenever And Wherever You Like: This feature is a godsend. Being able to manually save and load files anytime and anywhere you like greatly alleviates the frustration of early game designs. It cuts down on a lot of wasted time so you can get back into the fight as soon as possible. No longer do you have to wait for tons of slow, unskippable animations just to load you back to the save point. No longer can a single mistake cause you a great deal of progress. This design easily makes this collection approachable. [*]Clever Split-screen: From what I've learned, these three games were originally on NDS and had a split-screen feature—one for gameplay and one for the map. In the Dominus Collection, the developers integrate the two screens together. The main gameplay takes up two-thirds of the screen while the map occupies half of what's left. The developers then fill the rest of the screen with character stats and enemy info. This is a wonderful decision. Not only can I see how exactly the status effects work on me and how "leveling up" actually affects my stats, but I can also learn more about the enemies' potential drops and their affinity bonuses. The latter is especially important since these three games revolve heavily around exploiting physical and elemental weaknesses. [*]The Enlightenment: Before playing the Dominus Collection, I wasn't a fan of the single-direction attacks and the affinity counterplay. I had some experience with them in a few metroidvanias, but the restrictive movement puts me off. Naturally, I did not have high hope going into this collection since the three games all feature the same, aforementioned ideas. Things take a turn, and now I understand the genius behind the deliberately rigid design. Giving each weapons and spells possessing obvious pros and cons actually makes me more invested in collecting them. The classic "rock-paper-scissor" gameplay offers a good opportunity to experiment and actively switch up your equipment on the go. This way you become more knowledgeable in your arsenal and begin to appreciate what each piece of equipment brings to the table. Are enemies constantly above you? Throwing axe is your best friend! Do big enemies stand in your way? Use spells that can multi-hit to melt them swiftly! Do bosses hit too hard up close? Just use throwing knives and low-cost spells to chip them away from a distance. [*]The "Stand-out" Differences: Other than the amazing soundtracks, each game also offers different things on the table. Dawn Of Sorrow (DoS for short) is probably the closest one to what we refer to as "modern metroidvania"—interconnected maps, clear gating abilities, and some interesting twists of its own. Plus, I believe this game shares more similarities with Ritual Of Night than the other two (all three of them are the forefathers of that game). Order Of Ecclesia (OoE for short) offers an interesting spell-slinging mechanic in which you have two dedicated buttons for spells, and you can alternate between them to rapid-cast. I have the most fun experimenting with a variety of spell combos and what their ultimates may be. Surprisingly, Portraits Of Ruins (PoR for short) is my favorite out of the three. It has two protagonists. The potential of having two different characters is immaculate. You can customize their gears individually to take full advantage of the affinity counterplay for both physical and elemental. You can switch between them or even summon the other to fight alongside you at any time. There are a few fun puzzles that require you to juggle between them, and the "Talk" button gives you insights for the two after some key moments. Things I Dislike About Castlevania Dominus Collection: [*]Products Of Their Time: While the goods remain mostly unscathed, the flaws, however, never stand a chance against the testament of time. All three games feature a horrible luck-based loot system with very little means for you to alter the chance. You can try to farm an item or soul from one monster for hours and still get nothing. This is especially annoying for DoS since the good ending requires you to get three specific souls to unlock a secret boss fight. The levels in these games are rather simple, with only a handful of them having some obstacle course. Levels in OoE and PoR especially feel disjointed due to the world-traveling system, with OoE being the worst since that game reuses the same exact layout several times. OoE also has the worst runback out of the three, and both OoE and PoR have their gating abilities stuck in spell form. I am more than happy to see that we have since moved on from "most" of these outdated designs. If you like what I write, please consider a follow to my curator page, thanks!

A collection of some of the absolute best games in the series. Every single game here is absolutely fantastic and they are all great in different ways. So let's break them down. Dawn of Sorrow: Out of this collection, and generally, this is one of the weaker Igavanias, I would honestly only consider it better than Circle of the Moon. The main reason for this is that it's basically an exact repeat of Aria of Sorrow but worse. Story? Less interesting. Level design? Significantly worse to the point that an entire quarter of the map has nothing of value in it. Combat? This is the ONLY part of Dawn that is genuinely excellent, but it really isn't enough to carry it. As it is let down by the terrible changes to the Soul system, with several souls now requiring MORE souls in order to make them better (basically just extra grinding for no reason), and this is due to the crafting system requiring certain souls. The problem with this crafting system though is that it actually discourages exploration because near ALL weapon types BEST weapons come from the crafting system. The saving grace of this game really is the Julius mode, which is not only storywise way better than the base game, but actually uses Dawn's level design in interesting ways. Ironically, Soma's bad ending timeline, ended up being the main attraction this time. Overall an 8/10. Portrait of Ruin: Oh my GOD this game is so good. Literally everything works about the game from a gameplay stand point, with Johnathan and Charlotte being both great alternate playstyles. Every painting is a great linear adventure, with the castle having really solid level design as a hubworld. The actual issues with this game that don't have to do with pure taste (some people would prefer less linear game design I get it) however, are mainly due to the item drop rates being pretty terrible, with pretty much required equipment for several of the side quests to be locked behind these drop rates. Wind's quests are overall great and the reveal of his true identity, and the story in general is great, but some of his quests really do feel like they were running out of ideas. Charlotte also does suffer from being clearly a lot more simple than Johnathan, odds are you are gonna be playing as Johnathan for most of the game simply because of how much more complex and tanky he is. The Richter gamemode is also nice, but honestly it felt like a huge missed opportunity to not have a John and Eric gamemode. This IS supposed to be the sequel to Bloodlines afterall. Despite these issues tho, this is still an excellent entry in the series. 9/10. Order of Eccelesia: Aria and Order battle for which I consider the best Igavania in the franchise constantly. This time Order wins out for me. The story, the return to a more Gothic artstyle, the sheer amount of options for combat, the excellent marriage of both Classicvania and Igavania design philosophies, and excellent side quests. This game has it all. Shanoa has an excellent journey, start to finish, with the game basically never stepping off the gas with throwing so many different ideas at you. The choice to change the mana meter to a stamina meter, adds so much strategy in the boss fights, with regular enemies also managing to put you down really quickly, even by the end of the game. The Albus gamemode is also a delightful powertrip after the sheer level of brutal difficulty in Shanoa's adventure, leading to a very well rounded game overall. The only really issue I have for the game is that the requirement for the good ending is very difficult to figure out, and it's more likely you'll stumble into the requirements without even realizing there WAS a bad ending. It's just an awkward part of the game's design when everything else is done so well. Overall though a genuine masterpiece. 10/10. Haunted Castle (Original): This game blows, it's so bad, worst game in the franchise by far (besides the mobile games). It's only redeeming quality is that it's short. 2/10. Haunted Castle Revisited: A remake so good it's a shock to the system. I cannot overstate how good of a glow up this game is. Turning the worst Classicvania by far into one of the most replayable and fun ones is an outstanding feat. Absolutely worth buying the collection just for this game, as it makes this collection better than any emulator can do with these other games. 8.5/10. (Still reuses a bit too many of the issues the original had). Now please Konami release a collection with Lament of Innocence, Curse of Darkness, Chronicles. Rondo of Blood, and Symphony with a remake of Belmont's Revenge I beg, it will be so nice to have.

Worth it for Order of Ecclesia alone. Easily the best Castlevania next to Symphony of the Night. Portrait of Ruin is pretty solid too overall, though given it released first, its gameplay is a bit less fleshed out than Ecclesia's. Dawn of Sorrow, however, is abysmal. They turned the gritty, gothic adventure in a slice of life japanese field trip. The game is absolutely abysmal. Julius mode should have been canon.
