Chaos Warrior

1 / 6

Chaos Warrior is a retro JRPG inspired by the NES era. Fight deadly monsters, explore dangerous locations, and gain the strength to become the hero that saves the world!

100 years ago, the Chaos Lord emerged and wrought death and destruction to all. A band of heroes rose and defeated the Chaos Lord, banishing him from this world with a magic crystal. Now the Chaos Lord has returned and it falls to you to defeat him once again.

Finn, a young Knight of the Kingdom of Efenia, is tasked with collecting the Crests from each of the 3 Kingdoms in order to unlock the power to defeat the Chaos Lord.

Engage in traditional JRPG turn based combat as you explore the world, gaining levels, abilities, weapons, and armor in order to fight stronger monsters as you journey further in your quest. Along the way you'll meet new allies with unique abilities both in and out of combat and find optional side quests and dungeons.

This was a very fun, lowish-stress RPG experience, very much along the lines of Dragon Quest 1 or 2, that you can finish in a weekend. Likes: + Characters have entertaining banter + Lots of treasure + Great music and sprites + Interesting customization options provided by rings + Battles stay threatening enough to be fun, even as you level up + Forgiving death system + Plays perfectly on Steam Deck Nitpicks: - Kind of too much treasure? By the end I was tossing Elixers on folks just to have room to pick up more Elixers. - New Game is the first/default choice in the main menu... At least there's a load feature once you get past the opening conversation with the King. - You get dozens of rings but only one slot per character to equip them. If there were two slots per character, that would allow more interesting combos. - The thief stops getting weapon upgrades from shops and story dungeons like 2/3rds of the way through

This is a little gem of a game. Think of Dragon Warrior 1 and Final Fantasy 1 vibes, with much better progression balancing, and an item system that encourages you to swap out gear for situations without feeling mundane. On top of that, a very forgiving save system lets you spade out the world as you will, trying to find an extra advantage before you're supposed to be there. Isn't that the best part of classical rpgs? You can even get your gold back after perishing if you go to the spot where you fell. All of your actions accumulate, and there's very little wasted time. I absolutely recommend this game as a love letter to rpgs. It has modern flavor and quality of life to make it a quick-ish play, and captures the feeling of that old school grind without it actually being grindy!

Its great. exactly what you're expecting, in a good way. its got a good blend of "old school"sensibilities, but with just enough QoL additions to make it a smooth experience without completely trivializing and neutering the experience. Satisfying pace and power curve. Good amount of optional content. Very slick and concise game.

Pitch perfect NES-era Dragon Quest / Final Fantasy JRPG. It has several quality of life features that make the experience less tedious than an actual '80s JRPG. Arguably kinda grindy in spots, but doing all the sidequests is usually enough to get you past the next dungeon and boss. The rings have highly varied effects and allow for interesting gameplay choices. All in all, if you want a solid retro JRPG without all the annoyances, this is a good choice.

Super fun retro RPG. The game takes about 9-10 hours to complete. It scratches the nostalgia itch if you like this genre. Hint -- try casting mute on every boss! Nothing sucks worse than taking heavy magic damage and getting hit with spells that inflict statuses. Also, try to go into higher level areas and grind a bit -- it pays off in droves to sequence break to skip to an advanced area, grind a fight, rest at the inn, grind some more, etc... until you level up a bit and can afford the advanced weapons/armor. Strongly recommend the game!

cool game! when the story started out extremely dragon quest-core and played it totally straight, i was worried the game would have nothing to offer but homage and quality of life perks. the but game has some real teeth - i expected to breeze right through, but immediately the game started throwing a lot of resistance at me. for a moment i thought it was expecting me to grind, but when i went exploring i realized there were several higher-level areas where, if i ran from a couple fights and got a little lucky, i could snag some stronger gear for free. this has happened again and again, there's always some town or cave you're not "supposed" to go to yet that'll empower you faster than raw training will. in fact, the game feels really nicely balanced around it so far. i'm impressed with how it anticipated my desire to shirk hard work and subtly encouraged me to do just that. and as a result i've grown to find its by-the-books fantasy story even a little charming...

They simple do not make them like this anymore. Extremely satisfying, short experience. Wonderful world, good dialogue with the party members. Nuke+Quick Ring is the best strat for leveling I've ever seen in this style of game, 10/10

I really liked this game, if you like old JRPGs like Dragon Quest/Final Fantasy you'll probably like it a lot. I think it takes about 5-6 hours to beat the normal game and it took me about 10 to 100% (but that includes getting characters to level 99, which is just grinding)
