Connie and the Essence of Chaos
Connie and the Essence of Chaos is an old school 2D platformer inspired by some of my favourite childhood games.
In this game you control the limbless hero Connie and her Spirit friend Plum on their quest to defeat Lucilate , an evil overlord who has taken over the island of Cuisinia . Travel through 6 different worlds, battle against tough bosses, free all the imprisoned Spirits and take down Lucilate for good! Harness the power of Essence to solve platforming challenges and navigate your way through tricky levels. Think before you jump because precision is key!
This game is 100% human made.

This game is an attempt to recapture the lightning Rayman Redemption was, but it lacks the polish, precision and perfection RR had. The gameplay is alike, but at times the difficulty goes into absurd levels, requiring you to be pixel perfect, otherwise you'll fail. In particular, the green blocks can at times be very frustrating to navigate, and the controls on remote fist are nowhere near as tight and polished, compared to precision the game demands of you. Meanwhile, most bosses in this game are a complete joke. There's no looking for a moment to attack, you just hold the punch button until they drop dead. As for the last two - well, I won't spoil the details, but that was absolute overkill. The story is nothing special, but that's to be expected. it is a simple Rayman 1-esque platformer after all, so not going to judge that part harshly. What I am going to judge harshly is the "heater" system. Purple heaters will not respawn, if you place them somewhere further ahead and then fall and get back at the checkpoint, so basically, you're screwed. And did we really need an entire world, built on ice physics, which is the bane of most platformers as is? I loved Rayman Redemption to bits, but this game? This isn't it, not even close. It mimics the gameplay, but there's a lot more polish required until it becomes as tight and pleasing to play. And if you are a fan of RR, I cannot in good conscience recommend you this one yet.

If you have even the slightest interest in the original Rayman, then Connie and the Essence of Chaos is an absolute must-buy. Rayman Redemption was a testing ground that allowed Ryemanni to learn the ins and outs of what makes good game design, and he put everything he learned into this. The results are, without any doubt in my mind, outstanding. The number one theme of this game provides is discovery. Levels don’t have any time limits, so you can take all the time you want to explore the world and see what it has to offer. New mechanics are offered at a very good pace, and they appear just enough times to reward the players for understanding them without overstaying their welcome. This is best shown with the essences you unlock after every major boss fight, as the transformations they give you offer plenty of fun movement and attack options. Don’t think for a second that this game will be a cakewalk; while it’s not outright unfair, the levels are still challenging with plenty of tricks and traps to maneuver through. The boss fights are a highlight because there’s no waiting for them to reveal their weak spots; if you see an opening, you can punch them repeatedly. Connie is also a treat to look at. It’s not quite as lush as Rayman, but the pixel art is still top notch, making splendid use of multiple sprites on singular characters, while the backgrounds have enough mysterious intrigue to them that they inspire the imagination. Cuisinia is a very full world, both in terms of visuals and lore; it pays to read the codex frequently to learn about every character and location. The story has plenty of charmingly funny moments, but near the end, there are genuine stakes that will motivate you to save Cuisinia. And to top it all off, Rye has upped his musical skills with tracks that can be energetic, ambient, or even downright silly. It might not be to everyone’s taste, but when it hits, it REALLY hits. Connie and the Essence of Chaos is everything I had hoped for. I would have said the game was too short, but then I looked at my playtime and realized “wait, I’ve been playing this for how long?!” It’s absolutely worth the price of admission, and it might be my favorite game of the year.

A fantastic fan-game for fans of Rayman. Connie and the Essence of Chaos is a a love letter to Rayman fans, being mostly inspired by Rayman 1 and Rayman 3. The developer of the game, Ryemanni, is actually the same person who developed Rayman Redemption, which is a Rayman fan-game that's essentially Rayman 1, but bigger and more polished. Connie and the Essence of Chaos follows a similar design philosophy. And that's very blatant as soon as you step into the game. This game truly makes no attempt to disguise the fact that it's based on Rayman 1 (and Rayman Redemption). Everything from the character animations to the enemy types and the powerups are all unapologetically Rayman. Just like Rayman 1 (something I'm probably going to say quite often in this review), the story is very bare-bones and ultimately serves as just a vehicle to get the player moving instead of something deep to be invested in. All of the worlds in the game are very creatively designed. Whereas Rayman 1 had half of its worlds be "whimsical" worlds (Band Land, Picture City, and Candy Chateau) and the other half were "realistic" worlds (The Dream Forest, Blue Mountains, and The Cave of Skops), Connie and the Essence of Chaos only has one "realistic" world (the first one), and every other one amps up the whimsy factor to the extreme by having several food-themed worlds (fast food, candy, a freezer, etc.) and a casino world. Not only are they just pretty to look at, but they give the game a distinct visual identity past just being a Rayman 1 clone. Speaking of not being a Rayman 1 clone, Connie plays fairly differently from Rayman in spite of her similar design. The most glaring omission is the lack of Rayman's signature helicopter hair ability, and also his ability to hang onto ledges. Connie's combat also works quite a bit differently as you don't hold the fist down to throw it farther. Instead, your fists travel the exact same length every time, but you can hold the button down to rapid fire it. This comes into play especially during boss fights, as unlike most platformers (and that includes Rayman 1), you can attack most bosses at any time (with some exceptions), which encourages you to find opportunities to attack the boss whenever you can at the risk of possibly putting yourself in more danger to get hit. The bosses in this game are generally quite fun. Also carried over from Rayman 1 is that game's notorious difficulty, although in Connie and the Essence of Chaos, you have unlimited lives, falling into a bottomless pit only costs you a single hit point and sends you back to your last platform, and your only penalty for dying is losing 20 jelly beans (the game's equivalent of Tings from Rayman 1), meaning you can actually do this on purpose to farm for them (although the likelihood of you needing to do this is incredibly slim). The level design and the enemies are quite challenging, but they're quite enjoyable at the same time. It's a very tough ride just like the game it's based on, but because of the game's modern-day amenities, you will always eventually be able to complete it as long as you're patient and adaptable. Whether this is a good thing or not is entirely on you. It's a fantastic Rayman fan-game made by someone who's both very passionate about the series its based one and the game they made. Definitely worth looking at. Steam Curator Page | Full Review

This Rayman inspired game with a sprinkle of DKC makes for a fun adventure, although the final moments do ramp up a bit too much in difficulty in my eyes, granted there is an assist mode to ease them out if you want to. Didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did but this was a pleasant time.

As an indie rayman/kirby inspired game, it is perfect to me at least. It plays exactly as it says in the description, and its quite challenging. Its easy to pick up and play, but trust me, its hard to master. The kind of game that would have been an all time classic if it released back in the era its emulating.

This was a pretty hard and frustrating game to 100% complete, but this also ended up as a pretty memorable experience cause of it, on top of its visual style being reminiscent of Rayman. This truly is a worthy spiritual successor to that game, and was well worth me purchase and playtime. I'm hoping to see more from this developer in the foreseeable future. Overall a visually and audibly appealing 2D platformer with some mature themes and gags here and there. I wouldn't go for everything though if I were you guys, everyone but 2.0% of us that went into this never came out with 100% completion!

The game manages to capture the charm of the original Rayman while also refining the formula, especially when it comes to difficulty. It does away with the lives system, and in exchange, the difficulty curve gets a little steeper, which I think is an excellent decision. I can’t find a single fault with the level design; I think it’s far superior to Rayman in that regard. It also includes extra challenges for those looking for a greater challenge, though I’m not one of them. I loved it, I played it with the same excitement I felt playing Rayman when I was a kid, and it’s now in the “Favorites” section of my Steam library. That said, let’s move on to the downsides. Artistically, it falls short of Rayman, but that’s completely understandable, considering it’s the work of a single person, and it’s still very good. On this point, I’d note that the music is quite uneven, with some great tracks and others that can get annoying. I think starting from the penultimate world, the artistic design of the levels and characters drops off a bit. The penultimate world could be much more thematic, and I think the final world takes a shift in tone compared to the rest of the game that I didn’t particularly like. Something similar happens with the last two bosses, they’re too dark compared to the rest, and they change the gameplay, turning it into chaos with too many things on screen, which I didn’t find fun at all. That said, I think it's amazing how the developer was able to create something like this. Rayman Redemption was a showcase of what they were capable of, and this game is the culmination of that experience. I can't wait to see what they´ll do next.
