You're either really going to like this game or you're...not. I am definitely of the latter. As much as I've tried playing this solo, playing this while streaming with others and a wide variety of circuits in the attempt to like this game that otherwise seems revered by others, I just can't bring myself to fully like it. On paper, it has a lot going for it. The music and the art are sublime and the combat system is responsive. There's a lot to upgrade, similar to sphere grid designs of FFX, and a seemingly large amount of customization was put into this for ways you could go...except that's not really true when you're expected to eventually get pretty much all of it for later on. Why? Because if you don't, you'd be dealing with endless damage sponges. But before anything else, we should talk about one thing: Puzzles. If you've looked at any of the negative reviews and a handful of the positives, they will all come back to that same problem - design choices. And they come back again and again and again and again...It's what pulled my want to constantly attempt at this. Sure, we're in 2026 - you're going to find all the solutions on the Internet and YouTube, but that's no fun. A large variety of the puzzles were just a little too esoteric for me to be constantly dealing with and no amount of handicapping your system with damage nerfs and HP caps, which this game does provide as an accessibility feature, is going to nerf the design that is static. If you're not big on puzzles that are very strict sometimes for timing, do not even attempt to play this game unless you are, beyond a shadow of a doubt, a masochist. If beating your head against a wall for x period of time to find y solution and getting the z reaction of 'what was the point of this' is your thing for a casual player...then, go for it. For most other people, you won't find much more honesty on the fact than that of the above. It's a shame, really - I see what the attempt was here to make a game that was challenging but at the same time there's a line to cross for being needless on the bloat. The reaction I like to feel from myself is 'the time I spent figuring this out was worth it to me'. I felt that very little in this game. The returns on my time just don't match the investment. You can pretty it up all you want and make it sound good but when the core of it is problematic, it's very difficult to recommend. As an additional mention, personally, It'll be interesting to see what I think about its successor, Alabaster Dawn when it's fully ready to go. I do have that on early access and, from what I've played so far, I think they understood the criticisms of this title and put forth at least some of it towards that title. We'll just have to see how the full experience plays out there but I'm hopeful for it.

CrossCode was a game I noticed years ago and put straight into my backlog. It wasn't until the announcement of Radical Fish Games next title, Alabaster Dawn, that I finally decided to play through it. What I experienced was one of the most impressive, emotional, and adrenaline-rushing games I have ever played. It immediately jumped onto my list of all-time favorites alongside games. Art Direction & Audiovisuals This game is absurdly beautiful, every pixel is pure eye candy. The animations are fluid, the sound cues and soundtrack are elite, and the hit effects give actions a wonderful impact. The special effects shine brightest when a big spectacle is called for, turning moments like Final Arts or intense boss interactions into true visual showcases and a flex from the artists. Beyond the core visuals, the game is packed with pop culture and gaming references such as item names (e.g.: a consumable named "Dk Pepper") to easter eggs like Bob Ross teaching a painting class, a Saitama inspired NPC, Vocaloid-esque characters at a karaoke bar, and many more. Setting & Narrative The story is one of CrossCode's strongest suits imo. Set inside "CrossWorlds", a fictional MMORPG built on physical, ethereal matter in a real world (or moon), the game handles meta-progression, XP, traders, and static NPCs naturally without breaking immersion (due to the fact that the setting is also a game). The characters were clearly written with tremendous care. Main companions like Emilie (with her hyperactive, explosive personality) and Tronny (with his quiet nature and intense fixation on details) felt like real people to me. It makes bonding with the cast really easy. The writing also thins the 4th wall, frequently predicting my thoughts through commentary from nearby NPCs. Combined with fantastic photography and soundtrack, the story was strong enough to hold up as a standalone book that I'd read. Gameplay & Combat Combat is fast-paced, fluid, and remarkably dynamic. The game encourages stylish play through a DmC-like style combo rank system (complete with a crescendo soundtrack that pumps up as you reach S-rank). You are given a vast toolkit to approach encounters: [*] Ranged Attacks: Precise aiming and timing allow you to knock back enemies for kiting or barrage them for high DPS. [*] Melee & Mobility: Dash-canceling enables semi-custom combo chains while keeping you agile. [*] Defense: Well-timed dodges offer invulnerability frames, while Perfect Guards reward precise timing with immediate counter-attack follow-ups. The visual and audio choreography makes every critical blow, stun, and perfect guard feel incredibly satisfying. Puzzles & Exploration While non-puzzle fans might find the pacing shift noticeable, the puzzle design is top-tier. Puzzles act as a hands-on training ground, teaching you how to use newly acquired elemental abilities and coordinate combat options under pressure. Each dungeon culminates in a spectacular boss fight that acts as a test of your comprehension, requiring you to exploit weaknesses using the logic learned during that area's puzzles. For completionists, exploration is equally rewarding. While many treasure chests are easily spotty, others require sharp perception, environmental problem-solving, and spatial awareness to reach. Conclusion CrossCode is an essential experience for anyone passionate about gaming as an art form. If you prefer strictly streamlined, modern AAA experiences, it might require a small adjustment in mindset, but its incredible combat, deep puzzles, top-tier writing, and affordable price point make it an absolute masterpiece worth every second.

I really like this game! Of course, there are frustrating and challenging parts (as forewarned) which makes me swear sometimes. Okay, most of the time. I played in normal difficulty. Story: Coherent and ties up nicely in the DLC. Truly invokes the nostalgic feeling of playing an MMO. Comedy and drama are placed well. Lore is interesting and well thought--shapes, elements, classes. Puzzles: YEY PUZZLES!! ERK. TIMED AND ACCURATE PUZZLES I DIE XD. Yey platforming puzzles. Combat: Challenging boss fights for a top down 2D game. Voice acting: I know it was an April Fool's addition, but I really wish all characters had lines. Favorite cameo: Santa XD (IYKYK)

(Completed on Switch 55h) So much love poured into this project, it was tedious at times and sometimes extended the background story more than necessary, but it also helped create the world around you. Loved it, can't wait for the final release of Alabaster Dawn to see how this team evolves

This game is genuinely the best thing I’ve ever played. Not a single AAA masterpiece has resonated with me as much as this gem. I feel both happy and regretful that I didn’t play it sooner and held off at first because of the tricky jumping mechanics (it pushed me away in the beginning, though it certainly has its own charm). To me, absolutely EVERYTHING here was engaging, with a perfectly balanced mix. It never felt boring; there wasn't an overwhelming amount of puzzles, nor were there endless fights. Not a single boss or plot twist felt dull. And most importantly: the story. I don't know about anyone else, but I loved it more than in any other game. It's insanely cool, emotional, and beautiful. Huge props to the developers for adding special dialogue in New Game+ (those who’ve played it will know). That alone made me want to rush through the whole game one more time and relive everything. A special thank you for the smooth, intuitive character controls and the complete lack of bugs (aside from having to restart the fight with Apollo in the arena). It honestly makes me sad that such a masterpiece has so few downloads. I truly hope more people discover it and give it a try, because it is MAGNIFICENT, STUNNING, REMARKABLE!

I was recommended this game from an Iron Pineapple video, put it on the wishlist, and kind of forgot about it until the Steam Autumn Sale. I've only played for like 10 hours or so at the time of writing this, but so far this game is a gem. The music and sprite art is sublime, and the combat is super satisfying at the beginning. Once you progress through the story and become able to switch elemental properties on the fly, it elevates the combat even further! It has a lot of puzzles that I'm sure are frustrating for some people, but I personally enjoy it I've been finding it really hard not to boot this game up after I get off work just because it's so fun and charming, I highly recommend
