Dark Deity II

1 / 8

Dark Deity

👎 Definitely not recommended, one of the biggest disappointments in my gaming history 🕒 Hours Played: around 24h 🎯 Completion Status: Did one playthrough on Normal + all challenges and one training mission. (They had a number on them, so I wonder if they are finite or just loop indefinitely.) 🟪 Some Info [📝] — I think this is one of the harshest reviews I have ever written. This is mostly because I had quite a lot of hype for this game, but it didn't deliver in the areas of story and character development. One of my favorite sRPGs is Fire Emblem Awakening, which is a 3DS-exclusive game, and back in the day Dark Deity 1 was the closest thing I could get to a Fire Emblem-style game on PC, so I was completely charmed by it despite how many flaws it had. What I expected from Dark Deity 2 was another epic story with interesting characters, combined with a lot of quality-of-life improvements that a sequel would bring, but that proved not to be the case here. [📝] — In June 2026, the developer announced work on Dark Deity 3 and mentioned that DD2 had been made with the third installment in mind, which explains why some elements in DD2 ended up being, at least in my opinion, disappointing. I think it's worth quoting the developer himself: "I did just want to say that I built DD2 with DD3 in mind the entire time, and because of that, I ended up leaving way too many threads open in DD2. Apologies for that, really not my finest work." In my opinion, "way too many threads open" is an understatement, as the game spends its entire runtime throwing new plot threads at the player and then completely ignoring them. Literally, this game feels like chapter 1 of what should have been a 12-chapter story if you take the narrative and all those "threads" into consideration. 🟩 The Good [✅] Decent sRPG - As an sRPG, I think this is a solid title. Gameplay-wise, it is very similar to Fire Emblem, which is a good thing. There were some annoying things here and there, but that's hard to avoid in this type of game, and nothing stood out enough for me to complain about. [✅] Characters - I consider the characters in this game quite likable. I just don't enjoy what was done with them. [✅] Demonic arc - DD2 has a section of the game that heavily focuses on demonic themes. I quite enjoy occult and demonic motifs in games, so this was a welcome surprise. It was not a particularly good arc, but at least it provided a thematic change of pace. [✅] Customization - While not exactly to my liking, there is a lot of customization available in the game. Each character comes with their own passive and exclusive ability, two classes (primary and advanced), class-specific passive and active abilities, weapons with two possible runes, two ring slots per character, and upgrades for active abilities. Taking all of that into consideration, you can create some very fancy builds. [✅] Choices that are reflected during the game - The game offers some limited choices, mostly involving taking the side of a specific faction during the early game. Nothing major, just flavorful decisions that are acknowledged later in the campaign. It's a small thing, but always welcome in games like this. 🟦 The Neutral [➖] Classes - The classes are not what I would consider standard for this type of game. They were a little too fancy for my taste, and I often wasn't quite sure what kind of build I was aiming for with a character. [➖] Special objectives on each map - Every map comes with two special objectives that reward you if completed. These usually involve things such as finishing a map within a certain number of turns, avoiding losses, or interacting with an object on the map. I didn't find them particularly interesting and considered them more of a distraction that pushed puzzle-like mechanics into the game. The rewards are usually extra resources and rarely feel significant. [➖] Some characters are better than others - Due to each character having unique passives, active abilities, and class options, some characters end up being much more useful than others over the course of the campaign. 🟨 The Bad [⚠️] Items - This was somewhat of a mess in my opinion. The game does not really have traditional itemization. You have a weapon that can be modified with two runes, a large selection of rings with various effects (two per character), and that's essentially it. Weapons, runes, and rings provide deep customization and can create some very interesting and complex builds, perhaps a little too complex for my taste. I found myself wanting something simpler and more straightforward. Since all rings and runes are available from the start, there is also very little sense of meaningful loot progression throughout the game. [⚠️] Too many rings - As mentioned above, rings can significantly modify how a character functions. The problem is that every ring is visible from the beginning of the game. You still need materials to craft them, but you're immediately presented with 20+ or 30+ rings, all with their own unique effects. It felt like an overwhelming information dump very early in the campaign. You also never really unlock new ring options as you progress. [⚠️] Lack of a feeling of progression - While the game allows for extensive character customization, almost everything aside from classes is available from the start. As a result, it rarely feels like you're unlocking anything meaningful during the campaign. Characters level up, of course, but that mostly means gaining random stat increases. You don't really find significant loot on maps. There are only a few weapon tiers, along with some special weapons, but they never gave me a strong sense of progression. They felt more like additional customization options than actual upgrades. 🟥 The Ugly [💥] Family drama - From beginning to end, the game revolves around the family drama between the three main characters and Irving, the protagonist of DD1 and the father of the trio. This remains a constant topic throughout the entire game, while nearly every other plot point is pushed aside in its favor. Without going too deeply into spoiler territory, the Irving family drama is also far from the only family drama featured in the story. [💥] Lack of character progression - This ties directly into the family drama mentioned above. To maintain that constant tension between the characters, their emotional development seems to reset every few chapters. Characters never truly overcome their issues, learn to move on, or attempt to focus on something else. Whenever it feels like somebody has finally resolved a conflict, that development is ignored a few chapters later and everything returns to square one, as if nothing had ever been resolved. [💥] Story - Or rather, the lack of one. The game is about family drama first and foremost. Everything else exists mainly to support that central conflict. Throughout the story, the game repeatedly hints that larger events are taking place behind the scenes, opening up new plot threads and suggesting that many characters are connected to them in one way or another. However, DD2 never follows through on those ideas. [💥] Limited bonding system - One of the strongest features of both Fire Emblem and DD1 was the bonding system, which allowed you to learn more about characters and their relationships with one another. The system is still present in DD2, but each character can only bond with four other characters for some reason. The number of bond ranks was increased from the traditional three to five, but two of those ranks are simply fixed rewards rather than actual character conversations. [💥] Inventory management - Or rather, weapon and ring management. The interface provides very limited information. Comparing weapons and rune combinations is unnecessarily difficult because, unless you equip an item, the game often doesn't let you see how it actually compares to your current setup.

Bottom Line up Front: This is a a huge improvement over the first game, which I already quite enjoyed. Here's what I really enjoyed about the game: + Dark Deity 2 fixes the first game's overload of forgettable characters with a smaller cast of characters who all bring a little something special to the table. There are still a handful of duds who arrive with little fanfare, but the core cast have a chemistry akin to the great character relationships that make us love games like Fire Emblem. + I personally liked that they made the "baseline" option no permadeath, but permadeath can be toggled on if you like that sort of thing. I personally find myself playing overly conservative when permadeath is active in a game, and I like being able to play the game quickly without regrets. +Character voiceovers were a nice addition, and writing generally seemed to have matured over the previous game in my opinion. + Skills added a cool tactical layer, and mana felt like a readily available resource while still feeling like you needed to manage it. I think they really nailed the resource balance, which can be tough to do in this genre. +The ability to choose classes were a cool addition to allow a bit of customization. There definitely seemed to be some natural pairings, but I don't know if that's avoidable. Not the selling point of the game in my mind, but a nice little addition compared to the previous game. + On a similar note, the ability to customize weapons was a neat additional tool for customizing the team. The available enchantments seemed sufficiently unique such that it wasn't always just "+X Power". Now for the downsides: -The game had the standard SRPG issue where my strongest units were eventually just mowing down the enemies. Weaker units could only take a couple hits but tanks could go on forever. - I wish the balancing promoted more tactical use of damage types. Without the familiar weapon triangle of countering, the only things to go off of were Defense vs Fortitude vs Evasion. Early on it seemed to matter, but in the late game I practically ignored it and did fine. Having units with drastically different defenses and making me choose appropriate attackers would have been more tactically satisfying. Overall, I really enjoyed it, but it felt a bit more like a traditional RPG than the Strategy RPGs that it clearly takes inspiration from.

There are some things to like but it is a pretty different beast than Dark Deity 1. At first I didn't like the changes in art style. The more I played it though the less it bothered me until I was comfortable with it. I finished my first playthrough and now I am playing it a second time right away which is as good a compliment as you are going to get.

A wonderful game in the Fire Emblem category. That brought me here, but this added some elements that I've loved.

If you like turn-based tactics/strategy games the mechanics will immediately feel very familiar and you'll be right at home in no time. I was surprised to see that the whole game is fully voice acted, which was a nice touch that helped make each character's personality shine through. Never played the original Dark Deity, so I was also surprised to find that, based on what you can infer from the story, many of the characters are older versions of the characters from that game or their actual children, so now I'm interested in going back and seeing the older generation during their own adventures. The game feels comparatively quick-paced for this genre, which was also a bit of a surprise. There's a some choices that change the course of the story, which is also cool, and the characters do interact a fair bit in cutscenes or bonding events, which is always welcome. I'll definitely give part 1 and the upcoming sequel a try.
