Database Detective: Minor Crimes Division

1 / 8

There’s been a backlog of unsolved cases piling up in the Minor Crimes Division of the Los Zorangeles Police Department and we’ll need a Database Detective to help solve them.

We’ll need you to analyze clues and manipulate data using SQL , a database querying language, to figure out who perpetrated crimes from as minor as littering to as serious as not checking out of a hotel after the check-out time.

Don’t worry! This role is intended to be accessible for those without any SQL experience , so each Database Detective is given an introductory textbook when they start! This short textbook is less than 20 pages and explains everything that’s needed to solve each case.

If you still have trouble writing queries, our comprehensive error messaging system will tell you exactly where your query went wrong, making it easy to correct your mistakes.

Still not enough? Each Database Detective is assigned an assistant who’s ready to answer any questions you might have, whether they be about the case itself or the SQL queries you’ll need to write!

Understanding how to manipulate data using SQL is not the only part of being a Database Detective ! Your job will also require you to piece together evidence and clues, just like a real detective! Further on in your Database Detective career, you’ll have to sleuth through the internet and piece cases together yourself.

Job benefits also include…

Fully voice acted mission briefings at the beginning of each case!

Fully hand drawn art for you to enjoy!

More than 40 websites to explore!

10 cases for you to solve, each case getting longer and more complex!

A total of around 8-10 hours of valuable work experience to add to your resume!

I like the immersive experience of the whole game freezing when I write an inefficient SQL query.

Well, well, well. This was a ride. I start my new SQL job in exactly 4 days, and I spent the last week playing this game as "preparation." I cried a lot. And I'm looking forward to crying even more when I start my new job. Thanks! LMAO!

This game is so much fun, even if you DO know SQL. It’s incredibly well made, and it’s honestly amazing that it was created by a single developer. If you take your time to really dig into the cases and read everything that’s available, it gets hilarious. There are so many references, little details, and connections between things. Absolutely loved it. 10/10

The game setting is farcical, but the SQL queries are no joke. This game is both hilarious and educational. I feel a lot more confident about writing SQL after playing this game. The sheer amount of content packed into this game is impressive; especially on the MMORPG assignment, which has you searching through the profiles and forum posts of over 200 NPCs on a delightfully demented in-game internet. My only gripe is that the window management gets very frustrating as the game progresses and you need to juggle an increasing number of tables. The developer was thoughtful to include a close window command (alt + c) and a switch window command (alt + w), but these both have a deficiency: - After closing a window with (alt + c), if the subsequently focused window has a textbox, it will enter the character "c" in the textbox. - The (alt + w) command only alternates between the two most recently focused windows. It would be a lot more helpful (in my opinion) if it functioned more like (alt + tab) on Windows and cycled through all open windows.

Very well made and entertaining game with a nice story and a refreshing concept, though it does have some flaws. No prior SQL knowledge is required, but I do think if you have zero experience, you'll probably start getting a bit lost in the later cases. My main gripe is that the difficulty ramps up a LOT in the later cases, and it's not really because of the SQL. The SQL does get more complex, but the bigger jump is in the deduction itself. A lot of clues feel pretty assumption-based, and you sometimes have to make specific connections on your own just to figure out where to look next. As you progress, the cases start to involve a ton of tracking, cross-checking, and manually going through evidence, which can start to feel like a slog. Still enjoyed it a lot overall though. Definitely a good and creative game, I just think the later cases could have been handled better.

One of the best indie games I've played so far. Even with strong SQL knowledge, the game is challenging because the main part isn't writing queries - it's the investigation. You feel like you're dealing with some strange production issue that you have to resolve, but without any input data or steps to reproduce it. Step by step, you get closer to the answer, on a journey full of humor and references. Absolutely incredible work, thanks Thomas Hsu.

Really, really enjoyed the beginning cases of the game. It's hilarious, fun, and is good to refresh on SQL. The later cases I find I'm getting more and more frustrated. In the earlier cases, it's about filtering down data, joining tables, all to narrow down to a suspect. In the later cases, the nature of the game changes and you are mostly looking for little clues on websites which just isn't what I wanted from the game. I'm sure if you persist, the payoff is really good as the game seems very high quality, but the fun drops off for me.

picked this game during Steam Programming fest under the assumption that its a cute looking SQL programming only type game, didn't expect it'll become an OSINT game with SQL as its main way of solving each levels. Its very cute!!!! mind has been blown several times!!!! some later puzzles are lowkey kinda tiring to solve though. as a programmer, a lot of times i wish that I can just code the solution my way out of problems in my preferred programming languages, but simply can't because the nature of the game :( would show and share this game to my friends. good game!!!!!
