Dead Format

This game just doesn't run well, even on low settings I struggled to hit 30fps. No idea what's happening, I can run modern games like resident evil 9 just fine but this game just doesn't.

A very interesting game that delights with the cinematography of old videos. The puzzles weaving between them were great, and a lot of thought was put into reducing tedium of backtracking with the placement of unlocked shortcuts. I did hope for more puzzles that involved taking things between the various videos, as if that would change/reveal things, which does feel like a missed opportunity outside the existing few. Music, sound design, and aesthetics were all fantastic. Couple of major things to keep in mind when playing this though- * Make use of the save slots, as there is a point of no return and it isn't foreshadowed. You could lock yourself out of revisiting places. * The enemy that shows up in the middle of the game really cut a ton of the tension out of the horror. Because of its nature, it kind of artificially slowed things down and even if I was starting to get scared or my heartrate elevated, it turned into "well time to just sit on my thumbs for awhile" and doing nothing kinda wasn't great.

I started out loving this game until reaching the point where a pursuer creature follows you through almost the entire game. It made exploration and looking for items/clues a major chore. The game itself ran and looked fantastic, but the stealth system where you'd have to duck into a hiding spot constantly got to the point where I felt like I was making no progress or was missing things due to this factor. If the stealth mechanic was utilized for specific scripted segments, I feel this could have alleviated this complaint, but many of the areas where you were being pursued were fairly wide open with a lot of nooks to explore, with it being fairly difficult to keep track of where you'd already looked. I will say, the visuals are perfectly on point. The video segments the devs recorded for each of the various video tapes you find in game had the perfect level of being unsettling along with some campy humor that fit horror movies of the year this game's story was meant to take place, but these things didn't outweigh the frustrating gameplay sections.

Ça valait le coup rien que pour les réfs ciné que j'adore (Videodrome, Hellraiser, Invasion of the body snatchers, They Live, Existenz et bien sûr The Fly)

The concept is sublime. The execution is lacking. I love the whole conceit of entering these old films, with the little vignettes we get to see on the TV to prime us for the era and general vibe of the film we're about to invade. It's an irresistible concept I wish I could have played. But the performance was ruinous on my laptop, to the point that I had to try a Hail Mary of going into the options and turning off basically every neat visual effect (film grain, hairs on the negatives, etc.) which gave the old movies their character, in a desperate attempt to maintain (or reach) a stable 30 fps. It didn't work. Certain hallways, and ALL combat encounters, slowed the game to unplayable levels (seconds per frame rather than frames per second in a few instances). And even if all of this is just my laptop's fault, there still remains the cruelly programmed pathing and intelligence of the big bad (to speak generally and without spoilers). All of the fun of exploring and finding new items to carry into different films just vanished once the big bad stormed in and turned the game into me hiding under a table for anywhere from two to four minutes at a time while waiting for a "coast clear," which can be rescinded once I'm mere feet from the safe haven I've been hiding under. The game really could benefit from some sort of tweakable option to muzzle the big bad's aggressiveness. As is, the game lulled me into a generally confident feeling that I knew its vibe and pace, and then ruthlessly swept the rug out from under me a couple hours in. My patience didn't last long once I walked into the third VHS tape for the first time; this wasn't a problem in, say, Alien: Isolation, because that game ran at a stable framerate where I could run for my life down a hallway without fearing the game is about to crash (or simply run me face-first into a wall because I hit left on the controller and the game simply wasn't up to the challenge).
