Deadlight

1 / 8

The world has ended. There is no hope. No new beginning.

Only the survivors. DEADLIGHT follows the journey of Randall Wayne, a man searching for his family across Seattle during the aftermath of a 1980s event that has decimated life on earth. This visually stunning Cinematic Survival Platformer will challenge you to run, jump, climb, and struggle for your life as you look for answers and the ones you love. Key Features:

A beautiful deadly world where a misstep means death. Sharpen your surviving instinct and learn to turn the environment from foe to ally. In this hopeless world, an ordinary man, Randall Wayne, will reveal himself as a natural born survivor.

Think. Mindless shooting is never a good idea: there are much more walking corpses than bullets. Be smart and avoid direct confrontations whenever you can.

A suggestive world of darkness. 3D highly detailed models and environments mixed with 2D sidescroller old school gameplay to create a vintage 2.5D Cinematic Platformer. Unable to escape from the horror of this dying world, Randall Wayne's journey will lead him to Seattle, in a strange search beyond his own survival.

HD graphics that enhance the immersion and atmosphere of a dead world

New NIGHTMARE difficulty mode from the 80s. Totally rad!

Tons of extras, making of videos, unreleased concept art and more!

Un juegardo tristemente olvidado en los tiempos que corren; sin embargo, gracias a que está en Steam, podemos volver a disfrutarlos como cuando salió por primera vez.

I'm really torn on whether I would actually recommend that someone play this game or not. There are some aspects of it that I really liked, but there are also some other aspects that I can honestly say on my mother and father's lives are some of the worst game design choices I have ever seen in my entire life. The environments look nice. I really enjoyed what they did with the 3d environments mixed with the 2d side-scrolling gameplay here. I haven't played very many games with this style, and it stuck out to me. It looks quite nice for a game that came out in 2012. The exploration, for what it is, is fun. This isn't a metroidvania, but, you can tell that the developers made the game with that type of level design in mind, just on a much smaller scale. This game is at its best when you feel like you are flowing through the level, going from sequences of running through buildings and fighting zombies, running through more buildings, fighting more zombies, and so on. It's a pretty simple game, but the combat and movement come together to make it feel good when the action and running around mesh together. There are some Assassin's Creed / Mirror's Edge style parkour and climbing mechanics in this game, and the character you play as has a lot of weight and momentum to them. It's a unique feel that you get used to after a while. That being said, the game is at its worst when it's trying to be a platformer. The movement and overall control of the character are serviceable enough while you're in combat, and they're fine for the more simple maneuverability mechanics that the game offers to you... but oh my god, there are some sequences in this game where you have to make some truly unholy moves in order to progress. I'm talking about nearly frame-perfect wall jumps chained straight into a roll. I'm talking about having to run from a helicopter that is spraying you with a minigun, and if you don't make it over the fence at the exact millisecond the game expects you to, you are getting sprayed. There were sequences in this game where I must have died 10 to 20 times in a row to the same stupid crap because of incredibly JANK movement. The vast majority of your deaths in this game do not feel deserved. It feels like you are trying to fight against the controls, almost like you're playing QWOP, except imagine if QWOP was also a Super Mario style platformer, and Mario is a fat old man who always either jumps too far, or doesn't turn around as fast as you need him to, or just trips over his own feet like a total dumb ass and kills himself. You WILL die to the environments in this game far more than you will die to the "Shadows" (zombies). The more difficult sections of this game are frustratingly difficult and seriously mess up the pace of the gameplay. They are NOT FUN and it teeters past the point where I'd say that the game design is just bad. Almost like it was never play tested a single time. There's no way that someone on the team made this and then just released it like this and said, "yeah, this is good, let's keep it like it is!" - GTFOH. Even when it comes to the combat, there are some moments where it feels unfair and unfun. To be specific, since this is a 2D/3D game, the enemies will walk after you, coming into the scene from the background, and you can not fight against them until they are actually parallel with you in the scene. This means that enemies will, in some instances, just be invincible until they are on top of you. There were never any moments where I was killed by a single enemy, the only time you will die to the zombies are when they swarm you, which in some scenarios seemed to be completely unavoidable. One of them will grab you, and then the rest of the zombies will just true combo you since they can still deal damage to you even when you are incapacitated. There are no invincibility frames or anything like that, so you can go down quite quick. Of course, that's kind of to be expected, this is a zombie game after all, but still, annoying. That being said, the "WHACK" of hitting the zombies with the axe is quite satisfying, gotta give the devs credit where it's due. The story, plot, and dialogue in this game are very sub-par. It's not horrendous by any means, but, it definitely does seem like it was written by some college kid for his literature class thesis, if you get my drift. The main character always feels like he's trying to be "too cool", and the rest of the characters are either so unbelievable that it's jarring, or they're so normal that they just make the main character seem like a completely mentally ill freak by comparison. Imagine The Last of Us if it was written by a child that's never written anything before, and then condense it down into a 4-5 hour long game. You're searching for your wife and daughter, that's the entire plot. Take it or leave it. Despite all of that, for some reason, I did like this game. It sat in my Steam library for over a decade before I finally decided to play through it, and I'm glad that I did. It's a game that knows what it's trying to be and knows exactly what it's not trying to be. I'd say that you should give it a shot if you can find it for less than $10.00, if you like zombie games, post-apocalyptic settings, and platforming. It's not worth $15.00. Decent, mid, jank as hell, good for a 2012 game, probably would have loved this if I played it when I was 13 on Xbox 360. No bugs or crashes that I can recall during my playthrough.

About 5 years back I have completed this game but a Derector's Cut version, back then I was younger, considerably so, and have seen less games. This time the game took 2 times less time to complete, and, actually, would take 1 hour less if I wasn't eating my dinner xd. The positives of the game are: artstyle, simple story with good message which is all I need from an indie platformer of such quality, pretty good graphics for its time of release. The game doesn't do anything spectacular, doesn't bring any new ideas or shock the player with insane quality or new mechanics. Oh, one good thing about this "normal" version is that it doesn't have the survival and some other mode, I remembered that those exists simply by looking at the achievements of the Director's Cut, I hate when single player games have some weird game modes or force the player to somehow interact with other players (like having friends who own and have played this game, it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ blasphemy). Now the negatives remain the same even after all these years: hitboxes, some scripting or certain scenarios, and how these 2 issues really made me rage in Nightmare mode 2 chapter, which is extremely long for no reason but to make you rage and rewatch and relisten to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ Rat for way too many times, hate his whole section, way too tedious when you have to replay it. If you're an achievement hunter, it will take some effort, and if you're sleep deprived on the day of you playthrough you might rage a little just like me. If you're a sane person, you'll enjoy this game and forget about it. Have fun!

Deadlight nails the look: the silhouetted 2.5D Seattle, the hand drawn comic cutscenes, the whole hopeless mood of it really got under my skin. The problem is Randall himself, who finishes every animation before he listens to you, so the chase sequences and collapsing rooms turn into trial and error until the controls finally cooperate. Combat is basically a non option since two axe swings leave him winded and ammo is scarce, which fits the survival theme but gets old when a zombie clips you through a wall. Rat's sewer chapter dragged, the voice acting is stiff, and I finished in under four hours. Still, I'd recommend it on sale and with a controller, but grab the Director's Cut instead since it's cheaper and this version doesn't even tell you it exists.
