One of my all time favorite games back to life! I don't know if I could count the number of hours I spent playing this game. Just awesome to see some of the cutscenes for the first time 40 years later. Bonus to have new editions of the game that I can explore. Overall would recommend this game if you like nostalgic game play the way it "used to be".

Reine Nostalgie für mich, denn das Spiel habe ich auf dem C64, Atari ST und Amiga gespielt. Die Umsetzung hier ist definitiv nicht gelungen, die Minigames sind so per Maus viel zu schwer. Der "neue" Modus hat mit dem eigentlichen Klassiker einfach gar nichts zu tun. Und gleich der erste Durchlauf im Klassik-Modus dauerte, obwohl gar nichts in den Minigames gelungen war, führte nach knapp 30 Minuten zum Sieg. Hurra?

Defender of the Crown is a classic old game, and one of my formative gaming experiences. The Legend Returns provides three modes: the classic game, an updated mode with a face lift and UI and gameplay improvements, and a new "rogue-like" mode with dice and cards (in this mode all of the dexterity minigames are thrown out for themed dice games that offer a little more strategic gameplay). The various updates they've made in the new modes are very tasteful, and are pretty much universally good improvements. The sprite-work they've done for the updated modes especially deserves a callout because it is absolutely gorgeous. This is one of the better looking "retro" style games I've played. If Defender of the Crown inspires any feelings of nostalgia for you, then this is easily the best way to experience it in the current year. All that said, you can basically beat the game and experience everything on offer here in 30 minutes. As such, $20 feels like a steep price point.

several key elemenst of the retro version are missing (i.e. health bars, info about the amount of hits at the siege, etc) and the so called kingdom version is a deep disappointment. i was hoping for a refined strategy and tactical elements and instead there is a clumsy strategic overwiev which doesn´t make the game any deeper and an awful and disappointing card combat instead of field battles.

Actually it's really a "yes" on Retro and Classic mode and "no" on Kingdom mode. Classic is a improved Retro mode with nicer graphics and extended gameplay. Swords fights have blocks and parry along with a thrust move. Jousting is easier to win with a controller and looks cool doing it. It's Kingdom mode that disappoints. Dice and cards take place instead of you controlling your character. It lacks the fun and excitement of the original game. Instead of improving the game by adding more challenges to it, A 3rd person sword fight and "total war" style castle siege would of added some challenge to the game. If you enjoyed Defender in the 80's then Retro and Classic would be worth the price when it's on sale.

Für mich, der das Original auf dem C64 als Teenager gesuchtet hat, die Neuerscheinung des Jahres! ENGLISH version: Awesome! 1. Stays true to the original (Retro Mode), 2. Features modern graphics while still being a familiar game (Classic Mode), 3. Brings the game into the present day with new features and rules. For me—who used to play the original on the C64 as a teenager—this is the release of the year!

I really enjoyed the original game, so this was an instant buy for me and I wasn't disappointed. I mostly played Classic and Retro mode. While I do enjoy deckbuilders, Kingdom mode felt a little out of place for me. I would have preferred additional features added to Classic mode instead. That said, it's still a really fun game that stays very true to the original, and I had a great time with it. The Good --- - Great pixel art that stays true to the original style and setting, while adding extra rendering effects and 3D lighting - Improved and clear user interface - Great music and sound effects - Combat and raiding castles is fun - Nice cinematics and animations The Bad --- - The game is very easy. I would have liked more gameplay options, such as changing difficulty modes. - Tournament Jousting feels a bit clunky and could use some improvement.
