the (technically) second game in the detective grimoire series, which i was not very familiar with until a few months ago. i don't necessarily recommend this game in the series, but the lore inside it is interesting and gives context for tangle tower (and mermaid mask, a bit), and i also like the cast of characters. despite the recommendation not to play, i wanted to play it myself just for fun ! there's some problems i have with secret of the swamp (that i had first just from seeing gameplay) but i believe it's just things i prefer from the other games; such as being able to get any flavor text for every clue you present to suspect, rather than having to skip through repeated dialogue with a majority of the clues you show to the suspects if it isn't related to them. some things are just really tedious in this installment of the series as well, for example: having to click on every clue with "slime" to test in weybridge's home. i did not like sitting through that, personally. i am glad that the devs had changed things through the series' installments, maybe even seeing criticism that i'm giving in my review here. i don't necessarily hate SOTS, but it just falls flat compared to tangle tower and the mermaid mask. the detective grimoire series is WONDERFUL, and i'd love to see SOTS get some sort of revamp in the future, maybe. 7.5/10 at least, i still love the art and voice acting so much in all of these games (including SOTS despite the outdated style compared to TT or MM), so i don't feel like i could rate the game too low.

A wonderful short game with a beautiful art style and surprisingly extensive and fluid animations. Voice acting is present and is also great. Two complaints: I got a bit bored by the end, when I already knew who was the culprit and how everything went down, but still needed to run around talking to people. Second one is that the "culprit" did nothing wrong and I felt really bad about ratting him out to the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ cop =/

A decent addition to the later (and better) games in the series, but not worth buying on its own. Very much showing that it came first - pretty rough around the edges. Might be worth getting as part of a bundle. Otherwise, not really.

Omg Yay the Detective Grimoire & Sally origin story!... oh... oh no... they made Sally for the male-gaze........ -------------------------- Completion time: 2h 100% achievements Worth playing if you like Tangle Tower & The Mermaids Mask. However, I'm not sure if would have recommended this if it were a standalone game.

Learned afterwards that this is technically the second Detective Grimoire game with first one having been a flash game or something? Well either way, its really neat and good start, though also has some early installment oddities (like strange little girl character seems to just vanish afterwards even though stinger implies they might show up, also Sally here is a flirt while later on, after she somehow becomes a sidekick, she is just deadpan snarker.) But yeah its overall really neat short mystery that is still worth playing even with later installment improving a lot in each entry

I think as a mystery game, it's pretty simple. It really shines with the characters and the dialogue, as they're chock-full of charm and entertainment. The game is a nice and short, and feels pretty representative of people who have been making point-and-click Flash games on Newgrounds back in the early 2000s. It's even got Dan McNeely and Egoraptor!

Super cute, short detective game, not difficult. The puzzles are fun and easy, voice acting great. Very whimsical and I look forward to the next game in the series!
