Winning is unsatisfying, losing is unbearable. Dicey Dungeons truly encapsulates the feeling of rolling die in a casino where the odds are massively stacked against you. As the theme of the game suggests, your build and performance relies entirely on the die you roll. In that respect, perhaps Dicey Dungeons (DD) achieved what it set out to do, that is, if being a fun game was irrelevant to said goals. In my time with DD, I have had many frustrations that left me scratching my head, asking questions. Why can statuses applied to me completely ruin my turn, but those same statuses applied to the enemy make little difference? Why, when I apply weaken to enemies tools, do enemies still have effective builds that function properly, as if the status isn't so much as a thorn in their side? Here's a real example: I had an equipment that required a 4 or under, it did x damage and applied weak. When this equipment is weakened, it doesn't do damage at all, that aspect is removed. The sole thing it becomes is a weaken applier. But it's fine, because it goes both ways, right? Not quite. You see, when I weaken an enemies equipment that deals damage and applies weaken, it simply removes the weaken effect. They still get to do damage, yet my damage gets massively hindered. This leads to a situation where applying a status feels unrewarding, unsatisfying and overall like it's not worth my time, whereas statuses applied to me feel crippling. This game, in general, seems engineered to squeeze as much health out of you as possible, so it can unceremoniously offer you flat, uninteresting healing items that provide no satisfaction to the gameplay loop. DD taunts you with enemies that use unique and interesting kits, before snatching away your crayons and sending you down the same old build paths time and time again. But here's the moment of clarity: enemies don't need to win a run. They're obstacles. Despite using the same exact tools and mechanics as you, their builds aren't designed to beat the same game you're playing, they're designed to slow you down and ruin your flow. Their job is seemingly to stall and waste as much of your time as possible to keep you in combat, with the intent of either slowly chipping down your health or nuking you when the fight takes too long. And there is truly no better example for this than Loud Bird: Devourer of Gods. Loud Bird, on ANY even it rolls, will become immune to your next attack. Conversely, on rolling odds, it can deal x damage and apply TWO weaken, nerfing half your kit into useless ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. With four die every turn at its disposal, the chances of Loud Bird only being able to do one of these things is very, very slim. Loud Bird, every turn, will reduce the damage you deal by a disgusting amount, by making itself semi-invulnerable and making attacks even worse than what the aforementioned semi-invulnerability achieves alone. And if these weren't already the hallmarks of a boring, aggravating staller, Loud B. Johnson also has access to Squawk. If he gets any doubles, which he does infuriatingly often, then he silences you. Silence is a status that removes your entire character identity, reducing your available options, and thus, decisions, from few to one. (this is a common pattern with statuses. Statuses don't apply small percentage debuffs, they kneecap your abilities and capabilities, and force you into doing the only sensible course of action left, meaning every turn spent with a status makes the shallow game even shallower) Dicey Dungeons is a game utterly devoid of flavour on the player's side of the board, gatekeeping fun gimmicks to be used by enemies only. Players and enemies don't have to have access to the same exact things, but in a game with utterly non-existent, insanely shallow build variety, it feels like a slap in the face. Never before have I seen a roguelike with so few passive abilities, upgrades, options and tools, with such a blatant disregard for player choice, variety and agency. Why bother playing when you are only ever awarded with sidegrades? Why bother when the game places a hard, hard cap on how many items you can use at once, a cap that you meet within 5 minutes? Dicey Dungeons is a game so obsessed with the incompetent futility of trying to make every tool equal in worth, that it has no shiny new toys to offer the player to keep the gameplay refreshing and rewarding. I can applaud the creator, Terry Cavanagh, for not jumping on the dopamine-farming bandwagon, but there is such a thing as too much restraint. Speaking of, Terry had this to say on the genre giant, Slay the Spire: "I should avoid playing ((Slay the Spire)) until I've finished this. Just because I don't want to contaminate my ideas with their ideas. I want to do my own thing, you know." A noble pursuit. Applaudable, even. But in trying to avoid riding coattails to the oasis, he found himself stranded in the dunes. Better luck next time.

Fun game. It presents a variety of tweaks to the base gameplay that keeps it fresh and the challenges unique. The game itself involves both luck and strategy, leaning more towards strategy once you unlock a few pieces of equipment in each run. I would consider this worth the price at $15 and even more so if you can get it on sale.

8/10 With all due respect, this game has no right being nearly as good as it is. I thought it would be a silly iteration on the genre, with the cartoony art and all. No, this game has a wide range of depth. The characters all play differently in interesting ways, and the challenges from the higher levels of each makes even the same character feel unique. Sometimes the monsters feel a little same-y, but there are plenty which are unique and interesting to try and play around. Really good game that I've come back to many times, and will continue to.

My favorite roguelite by far. Every character plays differently and there's limited content you can actually play through and enjoy the entire time (not an infinite time suck and doesn't try to be).

Full of great ideas, but the further you go the worse it gets. This game is very close to being good, but it turns out that if you make a whole game about rolling dice... it's just too random. Like VERY random, and even despite all the tools the game gives you! The execution is solid, but I think the design was just sadly flawed from the start.

Perfect Steam Deck game. Can be funny, relaxing, challenging - whatever you're in the mood for. Really well thought out.

A fun and highly addictive roguelike. It's very replayable, creative, and has a great soundtrack. The way it uses dice in combat is incredibly innovative and unique. It also introduces a variety of tweaks to the base gameplay that keep things fresh and make each challenge feel unique. Highly recommended.

one of my favorite games of all time, though I admit I'm a sucker for dice-based-roguelikes. I don't think this game gets enough credit for it's genuine strategic depth; a lot of the negative reviews I see I think are overlooking a lot of intentional design choices that add meaningful meta interaction (swapping out equipment for specific fights, knowing weaknesses of enemies, planning around status effects, etc). of course, like any game that has its entire mechanical foundation based around chance... it'll be complete bulls*** sometimes, but like... isn't that the point lmao I'm writing this review because I'm replaying it for like the 5th time on mobile right now and wanted to look into modding it because gmfd I wish there was more to it lol
