It preserves the gameplay of the classic DOOM games while making it much darker. Visually, I find it very reminiscent of Quake, especially with its dark and gothic design. Instead of the rock and metal-inspired music of the first two games, dark ambient sounds and disturbing atmospheric effects are used. The combination of the dark visual style and the game's sound creates a much more gloomy atmosphere than DOOM. I also really liked the Pain Elemental design; it looks like it came straight out of a Brutal Death Metal album cover. The Unmaker, the game's only new weapon, also has a design I really like, and you can make it even stronger by adding new abilities with the three Demon Keys found in secret levels. Other than that, there are no new weapons; the visuals and sounds of the other weapons have been changed. The main reason the weapon animations and enemy variety are more limited is the N64's technical limitations. Memory and processing power limitations resulted in fewer frames being used in animations and fewer enemy types being included. I don't mind this. Puzzles and finding secret levels can also be more tedious than necessary. In addition, after completing the main campaign, a second campaign called The Lost Levels is unlocked. Alternatively, it can be unlocked by completing the super-secret Hectic level, and it strengthens the story connections between classic DOOM and the modern DOOM games.

My favourite Classic Doom entry. A lot of the enemy and weapon designs are redone and superior, combat is still as satisfying as ever and the game delves into the horror side of Doom with creepy ambience and atmospheric level design. The secret levels now play a much bigger role with them containing upgrades for a new weapon that aren't featured anyone else which makes them even better to get to. This remaster also adds a new set of levels which are all fantastic.

Summary: Play the enhanced version of the original game released on the Nintendo 64 in 1997. Years have passed since you stopped Hell’s invasion of Earth. Quarantined for humanity’s safety, the UAC research facilities on Mars were abandoned and forgotten...until now. ------------------------------- What is in the game: This is a standard doom affair: selection of maps and secret levels you progress through killing demons with 5 difficulties to select. ------------------------------- Thoughts: Doom 64 is a very strange Doom game with a strange background; it's a fully standalone Doom game originally made for the N64 by Midway. It looks nothing like the other classic games and just has a bunch of other strange gameplay differences while also having stuff that is the same as the classic games. It has a lot of great elements and also a ton of not-so-great parts that make me not like this as much as the base Doom games, but is it bad? No. The gameplay and looks are more in detail below, but overall, it's a classic Doom that looks much prettier but has very different level design philosophies that make this a slower-paced game. I'd say it's worth a shot if you like classic doom and are willing to sit through some LONG levels. ------------------------------- Mid PC Optimization: Ran fine at 60 fps the whole time; should run well on pretty much anything. It's an N64 Doom game. ------------------------------- Time to Beat: ~8 1/2 hours. ------------------------------- Price: ☑ Buy it full ☐ Wait for sale ☐ Don't buy it ☐ Free It's a decent game, and it's only 5 bucks. It does also go on sale pretty often, so maybe you might want to wait for one of those since it is a game from the 90s. ------------------------------- Graphics: ☐ Amazing ☑ Good ☐ Average ☐ Bad ☐ Awful When it comes to the maps, these are my favorite-looking classic Doom levels; the colored lighting and new textures for the game look ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awesome. The hell levels especially look great, and the skyboxes are amazing too. The monsters also have new looks, and I'm partial to them. Some, like the Cacodemon and Imps, I do really like, and others, like the Zombieman and Mancubus, I vastly prefer their og sprites. The weapons look okay too; the power weapons I really like, but the basic shotgun and stuff I like the original textures more. It's just a different take on doom that I like and find interesting. ------------------------------- Gameplay: ☐ Very Fun ☐ Fun ☑ Meh ☐ Bad ☐ Awful The base gameplay is pretty much the same as doom 1 and 2 but with some added and removed stuff, and its still good gameplay, but the levels for me are kind of a let down, they are a lot more slower paced, large, maze-like and puzzle heavy than any doom 1 or 2 maps, which i dont like as much as just running and gunning. I do also think the puzzles in this game can kind of suck with very unclear indicators that normally result in pressing a switch and having to back track to find a random wall texture that slid open. They can also just be confusing to navigate because of the maze-like layouts. The levels also have very little enemy variety sometimes and just spam imps and hell knights at you, which becomes boring after a bit. There are also some objective downgrades like zombiemen and shotgunners now looking the same, so you don't know which enemy you are fighting anymore. The weapons also all just feel like they have weirdly long delays sometimes and are missing features from the classic game, like the super shotgun's reload animation. The new super weapon is pretty cool, though. I like the idea, and apparently you can even upgrade it as you play, but I was unable to find the secret levels. The final boss was neat too and better than a wall texture, but it just kind of spams homing projectiles. Overall, it's just kind of a worse Doom 2 in my opinion when it comes to gameplay. ------------------------------- Music: ☐ Amazing ☑ Good ☐ Average ☐ Bad ☐ Terrible ☐ None I really like the soundtrack here; the only real doom songs here are the intro and intermission music, while the rest are really great hellish soundscapes. They sound like Silent Hill otherworld music before Silent Hill came out. It's great and really fits the slower levels and makes this game feel really unique. The 2 normal songs are also pretty damn good. ------------------------------- Bugs: ☑ None that ive seen ☐ Not impactful ☐ Negatively affects gameplay I dont recall any bugs. ------------------------------- Side-Notes: There is a fan source port you can use; you can use these ports' files to play that, which is apparently more accurate to the N64 if you want that.

I've only played Doom 1, 2, and this, but this is by far my favorite. It's got incredible music and atmosphere. The only thing I'd really complain about is the Lost Souls. Horrid enemy that is extremely overused for how broken and annoying it is.

It has better art than doom 1&2 imo but the levels are incomprehensible guessing games with 0 cleverness.

Good classic DOOM fun. Maps can get very very cryptic at times, that's the main drawback. Still would recommend for someone who wants more classic DOOM. Better than Master Levels and TNT Evilution, but not as good as Doom 1, or Plutonia. About equal to Doom 2.
