'Because the devs said so' fix controller aim assist. The Ancient Gods feels like certainly a step, TAG keeps telling the player how youre supposed to play a game that spent its entire base campaign teaching you that the fun was figuring out how you wanted to play Eternal could be simply summed up as; "Heres a sandbox, go nuts" The game slowly builds a diverse arsenal of useful weapons and modifications in your toolbox. some tools are better than others for certain tasks, but theres usually a couple options to each problem to fit your playstyle. It was lovely. It was lost. TAG 1 (the name of the dlc) looked at that design, and said "Heres a sandbox, but you need to use this shovel and only this shovel. all your other shovels, the trowel.. all intangible." On paper, a situation that requires a single weapon and or mod, is kind of restricting at best. the sheer amount of situations that require you to be constantly switching weapons and or mods, just borders on a level of overwhelming instead of engaging in a fun way. It feels like they looked at speedrunners completing their game in the matter of minutes, and it filled them with such spite & dismay they biblically decided to burn the entire playerbase for daring to want to fight hard it feels like one dev cried that thier weapon was underused on a spreadsheet and held the rest of the staff with a force choke... TAG 1 introduces Spirits, requiring you to use the Tractor Beam mod on the Plasma Rifle to kill them, and only the Tractor Beam. Again, this premise is fine on paper, until you see it in action: You have a fast paced shooter sandbox, where the entire point is to constantly be on the move. If you cannot kill quickly, you switch to a hit and run playstyle. You then design an enemy that requires the player, in this fast paced sandbox where "standing still can mean your death"(Tip you can see in game) For a prolonged period of time you are forced to trace a single enemy in the hoards it sends against you. It would be okay if the Spirit was inconsequential to the overall arena that you could simply ignore them until the situation to deal with them arises, but you cant simply ignore it. The Spirit possesses a nearby demon, making them move faster, hit harder, and take less damage. With the increased speed, often times this leads to the possessed demon constantly being in your face, and because of the increased damage, its designed to force the engagement as a threat. If the Tractor Beam is required to kill it, why cant i use the Plasma Rifles AOE to at least build some of the metre in the situations i cant sit still? TAG 1 also introduces a very frustrating enemy that is taking the staring contest gameplay of Marauder; the Blood Makyrs They are extremely ranged aggressive enemies with a stomp that stuns you when you get too close, that can only be killed by either alot of inaccurate fire during some attacks, or a single headshot using the AR's scoped mod otherwise? Invulnerable. INVULNNERABLE. IMMUNE. ZERO. This extends to the Marauder as well, having an enemy be completely immune until its AI decides its going to let you play, is not an engaging design, its a frustrating one of standing there staring at it thinking "mum said its my turn to shoot back" see line 1 Enemy density is also greatly increased. i understand it is a DLC and they explicitly say it is more difficult. but throwing 2 Cyber Demons, 4 Mancubus and a Marauder at me?while im swarmed by fodder demons such as the everpresent 2 respawning carcass's (Wall demon, makes the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ walls) In an arena that also has a Buff Totem hidden in some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ corner you would never find in natural gameplay flow... unless you 'rehearse' the spawns because they will take your blood money. constantly backing me into a corner and flinching so i cannot hit a shot is not engaging, its just mind numbing of "what is even going on?" Having to fight a Marauder thats buffed by a Totem that i cannot get to until he is dead, making an already fast and aggressive enemy move so fast his animations bug out is not difficulty by design, that is difficulty by stacking the numbers. I think the level design needed far longer. feels like a swath of quake 1 'challenge rooms' ass levels. theres a balance, eternal went a little silly, TAG 1 (& 2 dont worry) go overboard 'jam player in corner' 'stick player to floor'see line 1 forced to mention art did incredible so who would dare fix the problems. story was fun music good ----------------------------------------------------------------- if youre also thinking about TAG 2, HERES ANOTHER REVIEW TAG 2 tries to apply a bandaid fix to the chaos issue in the form of the Sentinel Hammer. The Sentinel Hammer clearing the board is the only fun part of TAG 2. It is easy to charge, simple to use, and versatile in its usability. However, it is very obvious that its purpose was to give back the breathing room the DLC takes away from you. Adding onto the Spirits and Blood Makyr, TAG 2 then adds more enemies onto the pile of "you need to use (insert weapon here) because we say so" (*see line 1) In the form of the Armoured Baron, Cursed Imps and the Stone Imps. The Armoured Baron is conceptually fine, but frustratingly limited in a "because the devs said so" manner; His armour can only be broken using Plasma weapons. A step in the right direction to at least let me pick which Plasma weapon to use, by why do only Plasma weapons work? The Mancubus has a variant with armour as well, and that is broken by any type of damage, what makes the Armoured Barons pieces of metal scrap so special that its immune to everything else? The Stone Imps make zero sense as a concept; i have 2 separate shotguns in my kit, they use the exact same ammo pool, why does only one shotgun, on one specific mod work? If the Sentinel Hammer also works for them, why cant i use things like missiles, the assault rifles armour piercing round, why are we limiting more of the kit for the sake of difficulty, when the difficulty makes no sense? The Cursed Prowlers are more just annoying, they stop you from dashing and jumping, taking away your movement ability in a game that needs you to be constantly moving, and the only way to kill them is with a Blood Punch, while they themselves are constantly moving away from you. This turns the Prowler from a "watch your back" enemy to "tag! Youre it!" in the middle of the gun fight. ♥♥♥♥♥♥ cheese touch With these enemies placed into the sandbox, its like throwing a wrench into the works of the entire thing. It no longer flows naturally regardless of your playstyle, its forcing you to play a certain way Eternal over 2016 tried to limit ammo and it flowed pretty well. Eternal teaches the player that the sandbox is the point, TAG keeps treating that sandbox like its something the designers need to override. Get to the end of the DLC, hoping that the "big fight" with the Dark Lord is memorable, right? Uninspired is an understatement. A glorified Marauder that sounds like hes having an asthma attack in that giant mech suit. The only differences between him and any other Marauder is an inflated health pool, he summons more demons instead of simply the wolves, and he has a couple of attacks that, if he hits you or you hit him, give him armour, mimicking the player The armour mechanic is the only unique piece of the entire fight. Punishing the player of haphazardly shooting instead of learning is a good thing, but a single good mechanic, does not save an entirely boring fight all in all just play doom eternal.

Replayed it after 4 yrs, I forgot how hard this DLC was. It is like a playable metal album cover.

This DLC is totally worth getting if you REALLY wanna be pushed to play this game well. It's incredibly difficult, especially on the higher difficulties. The encounters and hordes of enemies are super tricky. I died many times during the second to last battle of the second stage. It's a really tricky one. The more compact, smaller arenas really force you to refine your movement and spatial awareness, your movement's gotta be locked in to not get railed. I never used ice bomb much in my base game playthrough, but here it felt essential. This DLC does exactly what I wanted from a Doom Eternal addon, and that's to push me even further in improving my game. Fabulous DLC.
