Empty Horizons

I purchased solely for the emoticon. Every badge level with this one is so cute too. For $3 it is worth it if you like cute badges/ pink bow emoticon. As for the book. The art is pretty, she has some really cute outfits. It lacks voice actors and animations. In the least, it needed a voiceover as it would’ve given it a little something. Instead of voice actors it is paired with a single melody you hear for four hours. I will come back to dbd as a one brain cell Leon. Ugh pls it was cute for a bit and then muted. I wish the music would have changed to match the tone or allow us to select from various songs. As for the story I did not care for it. The ending is tragic. I was advertently sucked in and needed to see it through even when it dragged. Without giving away too many spoilers- trust your gut ladies. You could AFK for 100% completion. Speed up completion with a clicker or utilizing the skip button when it allows. *FYI sometimes while you use Steam chat or browse the activity section the book will continue on its own and other times it will not. With that said, it takes closer to 4 hours or less for 100% completion.

Empty Horizons is a story-focused visual novel developed and published by ebi-hime that places emotional storytelling and character development at the center of its experience. Rather than relying on gameplay systems built around combat, exploration, or puzzle-solving, the game builds momentum through dialogue, personal relationships, and emotional growth. It delivers a slower and more reflective narrative that focuses on grief, identity, loneliness, and human connection, creating an experience designed for players who appreciate thoughtful storytelling over traditional gameplay mechanics. The story follows Mireille Maiorano, a young woman whose carefully structured life begins to unravel after the death of her father. Raised within a sheltered environment and accustomed to emotional distance, Mireille suddenly finds herself forced into unfamiliar circumstances that challenge both her perspective and personal boundaries. Relocating to France after tragedy changes her life completely, placing her into an environment filled with unfamiliar people and situations she never expected to face. One of Empty Horizons’ strongest qualities comes from how it handles emotional vulnerability. Mireille is not written as an instantly charming protagonist designed to gain sympathy effortlessly. Instead, she feels complicated and often difficult to understand. She struggles with grief, frustration, and emotional isolation in ways that create a more believable central character. Her flaws become important parts of the narrative rather than obstacles the writing tries to avoid. The story explores how loss changes people and how emotional walls built for protection can slowly become barriers to personal growth. Mireille’s internal struggles shape much of the experience, creating a narrative that feels grounded in emotional realism rather than exaggerated drama. The game succeeds by giving characters room to develop naturally instead of forcing rapid emotional shifts purely for narrative convenience. A major portion of the story revolves around Mireille’s interactions with Lyon, a character who gradually becomes central to both the emotional direction of the narrative and Mireille’s personal journey. Their relationship develops slowly, beginning from tension and misunderstanding rather than immediate connection. Early conversations carry friction and frustration, but the writing gradually reveals deeper layers beneath those initial impressions. This slower approach becomes one of Empty Horizons’ greatest strengths. Character relationships evolve through smaller moments and subtle emotional changes rather than relying entirely on dramatic twists or sudden revelations. The progression feels patient and believable. Emotional growth emerges naturally over time, making important moments carry greater weight because they feel earned. Dialogue plays an especially important role throughout the experience. Since Empty Horizons depends heavily on conversation to maintain engagement, the writing quality becomes essential to its success. ebi-hime demonstrates strong understanding of quieter storytelling, allowing conversations to reveal personality and emotional complexity gradually rather than relying on heavy exposition. The visual presentation supports the tone effectively. Character artwork emphasizes emotional expression while maintaining a softer visual style that complements the reflective atmosphere. Background art remains understated but functional, helping establish setting without distracting attention away from dialogue and emotional moments. The visual design does not rely on spectacle but instead reinforces intimacy and personal storytelling. Music also contributes meaningfully to immersion. The soundtrack supports emotional scenes with restraint rather than overwhelming them. Softer compositions help reinforce feelings of loneliness, uncertainty, and personal reflection throughout Mireille’s journey. Combined with slower pacing, the audio presentation strengthens the melancholic atmosphere that shapes much of the experience. The pacing itself may become divisive depending on player expectations. Empty Horizons prioritizes emotional development above urgency, meaning players searching for frequent dramatic events or gameplay variety may occasionally find progression slower than anticipated. The narrative asks players to remain invested in conversation and character growth rather than external action. Visual novels naturally depend heavily on writing quality, and Empty Horizons commits fully to that design philosophy. Players who connect with emotional storytelling and character-driven narratives will likely find much more value than players looking for branching gameplay systems or heavier interaction. The game also avoids becoming overly dramatic despite exploring difficult themes. Rather than chasing emotional impact through constant tragedy, it finds strength through smaller moments of honesty and personal understanding. This restraint gives the story a stronger sense of authenticity and prevents emotional scenes from feeling forced. What ultimately makes Empty Horizons memorable is how personal it feels. ebi-hime builds a narrative centered around emotional change rather than spectacle, trusting dialogue and character development to carry the experience. That confidence allows the story to feel sincere and grounded even during its quieter moments. Players who enjoy visual novels focused on emotional depth, relationship development, and reflective storytelling will likely appreciate Empty Horizons for its careful writing and believable characters. It does not attempt to reinvent narrative-focused games, but it delivers a heartfelt and emotionally grounded experience that remains memorable well after its final scene. Rating: 8/10
