Endless Rails

1 / 8

Short Version: Worth a try, decent value for some simplistic yet charming roguelike train game. Long analysis: As a roguelike enthusiast who has spent a lot of time both playing these games and watching streamers and YouTubers play them, this genre has always been one of my go-to choices when I just want to kill some time, farm, and have fun. I've always been a massive fan of the idea that ,,less is more,, and I think simplicity can sometimes shine the brightest. That's one of the things I immediately liked here. The UI is clean, the art style is cute and simple, and the overall minimalist presentation works really well. The premise is straightforward, easy to understand, and it simply works. I initially thought the train would be static and that you'd mostly be controlling the turrets and other modules. Instead, having to manage the train's movement while simultaneously controlling the turrets and drones adds another layer of intensity and skill. You're not just managing your weapons—you have to pay attention to positioning and movement at the same time. I think the game has a lot of potential, especially if the developers continue expanding the variety. More encounter locations beyond stations would help, but I think the biggest opportunity is expanding the number and variety of modules. The more weird, wacky, and fun weapons, abilities, and module combinations you can stack together, the better. Things like dual-train modes or even encounters against rival trains could make runs much more unpredictable and spicy. They have to make sure the repetitiveness doesn't become boring and keeps on wanting you to go more and more like Vampire Survivors type games or at least make you not dump this within an hour, if an average customer likes this and spends more than 5hrs gameplay on it, id call it job well done. The tech tree could use some work, though. The early upgrades feel a little too expensive, and currently it takes too many reruns just to unlock two or three upgrades. I also think some of the effects and boosts currently attached to modules could instead become permanent unlockable skills within the tech tree. That would make progression feel more rewarding and give players more reasons to keep farming runs. I really like the trade-in mechanic for upgraded modules. It's genuinely an interesting idea, and I'd love to see it expanded further. For example, trading multiple weapons together could offer increasingly valuable weapon-based compensation. Maybe sacrificing four weapons from one cart could reward you with a unique or high-tier weapon. Giving up four weapons for one extremely powerful or rare weapon could create a really interesting risk-versus-reward decision. Overall, barely on the borderline of toss some cash for quick game area, usually 4,99 euros is what i toss for killing time games but this isnt too outrageous to ask, there's clearly thought put into the game, and it's already an enjoyable experience when you just want to kill some time and do a few runs. There's a strong foundation here, and I'm interested to see how the game develops and what else this developer creates in the future. For now: a solid 7.5/10. - this game had more excitement and thought behind than the new Wolverine lmao.

I would say this game is okay-ish. It relies hard on RNG. On some runs: you get nice equipment for your train. In other runs, you get nothing (even with re-roll) so you are dead after wave 5-6. The concept is great: You have a train you can move in 2 directions using your mouse. With WASD you move drones, to collect coins, attack enemies and use their skill like "dash" or "push back". For my taste, the "perma upgrade tree" lacks many many updates. You have around 20-25 updates. But most of 'em doesnt feel useful. You can upgrade the train to do "run over damage". and you have 3 trees for the 3 start-drones. Why are there no additional updates like: - coin collect range - train hp - train move speed - drone speed - "collect all remaining coins when reaching the next station" (yes: if you reach the station and the time is over, all coins are lost) So in summary: I like the concept and the idea, but it feels hard like a random generator. You can lock certain items to buy them in the next station but there is e.g. no "ban" to remove some choices from the list. Re-roll becomes more expensive every time you use it and the price doesn't reset on the next station. So it's very hard to create a proper built if the RNG hates you.

A cute little game where you move your train left and right to dodge enemy waves, while controlling movement on a pack of drones that shoot and gather coins. Between waves, you stop at stations where you buy modules for your train wagons. You can move wagons around, merge them for more slots (2 singles for 1 double, 2 doubles for one quad), and then you can trade in the quad wagons for scaling in-run bonuses. It's short though, my third run I made it to wave 35 and basically finished the whole game. QoL things I'd like to see in: - Sell for 100% or "Undo", to help deal with mistakes - Trade In explained - Waves and enemies explained - Refund permanent upgrades individually too Content I'm hoping for: - More upgrades - Upgrades for the individual train types - Viability for non-drone modules and for elemental modules - More enemies, bosses and module combos Lovely little gem all in all.

TL;DR: It's a fun game. I like trains. There isn't a huge amount of content at the time of this review, but it was absolutely worth picking up. I found Endless Rails completely by chance while looking through Steam's release calendar. I'd never seen or heard anything about it beforehand. I watched the trailer and basically thought, "I love roguelikes, I like trains, and this looks cool," so I bought it. And honestly, I had a blast. My biggest problem is that I'm already yearning for more. I had effectively completed most of what the game currently has to offer within about 5 hours, and had 100% completed it roughly 2 hours later. That said, I didn't stop there — I also pushed a run all the way to wave 100. At the moment, the game is a little light on content and variety. There aren't many enemy types, and the lack of boss variety becomes especially noticeable once you've played for a while. I'm sure more will come with future updates, but right now you do start seeing the same things repeatedly. The skill/upgrade tree is also pretty lacklustre. There simply isn't much to upgrade, and most of the meaningful weapon upgrades focus on the SMG, shotgun and rifle categories. That makes those weapon types far and above the strongest choices, which takes away some of the roguelike flavour. Part of the fun of this genre is being able to stumble into weird builds and make different weapons work, whereas here I often felt pushed toward the same few weapon types because the upgrade system heavily favours them. There are also definitely some bugs and performance issues, although nothing I'd personally call critical during normal progression. Things got considerably more interesting during my wave 100 run. Around wave 94, the game started going completely crazy — freezing, locking up and eventually crashing. Thankfully, the game saves your progress whenever you reach the next station, so the entire run wasn't wiped. At least in my case, I was able to load back in and continue. The shop state didn't fully survive the crash, which hurt the run, but the run itself did. From there I had a ridiculous number of freezes and crashes, particularly around waves 98 and 99, but somehow I eventually managed to push through and reach wave 100. Technically, the run is still alive as I'm writing this. Realistically, though, the constant freezing and crashing at this point has made the save almost unplayable. Despite all of that, I still came away really enjoying the game. The core idea works, the gameplay loop is fun, and there's something extremely satisfying about gradually turning your train into an increasingly ridiculous rolling death machine. It just needs more — more enemies, more bosses, more weapons, more meaningful upgrades, and more opportunities for different builds. For the price I paid, though, I've already gotten my money's worth. Recommended. Also: I like trains.

Basically a phone game with 2 hours of content at this point, and it's a full release, not early access (which I it should have been, because it barely has enough content for an extremely new early access). As of writing this review, they just posted an announcement that stated ambiguously “more content is on the way.” Well, they have a long road to make this worth a buy, even with the low price, because the core gameplay just isn't that interesting, is extremely unbalanced, and requires a very specific playstyle of maxing gold-increase items and drones (rendering all the other item options fairly negligible). In particular, the rifle drone allows you to just sit back and watch the stages after getting a single collection radius item (which are very common).

I went into this game completely blind and was pleasantly surprised how good it is! Cute graphics, animations. At first I thought meta upgrades were too expensive but then I realized you can re-spec them at will, so you can experiment very easily and merging cars is very powerful, if you're like me and didn't play demo or watch youtubers, just remember: merge your cars as soon as you can, it makes a huge difference. P.S. I played on a controller

The game is quite challenging, and has a really interesting concept. However the evo tree is lacking imo, as the upgrades it offers is quite little, and limiting. However, I'd would prefer it if the game would have a records section, so that players can compare with themselves on their progress within the game.
