Entropy

Finished act 1 in 2 sittings so the content is puddle sized but ocean deep. That should be the only thing causing you to pause before purchase. The game looks fantastic if you enjoy retro aesthetic with some fantastic art work to backup the characters. Lot's of lore to get lost into already and some interesting characters. My only serious complaint is that hard isn't all that hard, but I'll let you discover that on your own! Big recommend!

Game that has a lot of potential. Same writing and world building that I loved from Dread Delusion, but with a completely different turn based style of combat that feels much more engaging and rewarding than Dread Delusion. Only critique I have is that when traversing in map view, I feel like there could be a little bit more spots to interact with. Really enjoyed Act 1 and am looking forward to the finished game.

It's like Nausciaä and Vagrant Story had a love child and left it to be raised by FF7 while only being fed magic mushrooms. It's just great stuff. It's a JRPG through a depressed euro lense and that is meant as a compliment. The world is super intriguing. Alien and uncomfortable. The art direction and writing is strong, though a bit pretentious. But I like a bit of pretentiousness. Gameplay is tight and offers a lot of tactical depth on higher difficulties. 8 / 10 Can't wait for more content!

Lovely Hellplace will never get all the praise they truly deserve. I dont even like rpg games like this but I am now fully enraptured in this game. I would pay double what they are charging for this game even though its still EA. Ya da ya da praise praise praise you get it. Play the game and support their madness.

When I tell you this game has the sauce man. I was excited for this one and because I loved the vibe of the world and once I picked it up I couldn't put it down til I'd completed all that's available and my team was a well oiled machine. I really loved the kinda open ended squad building you can do and love the xcom like personnel managment aspect of it, but beyond that you're getting old school final fantasy turned based tastiness. Exploration is rewarded, you can get away with grinding as much or as little as you want to for the most part. The lore of the world is super intriguing and I can't wait to see more. I'm staring at steam waiting for act 2. One of my favorite if not my favorite game I've played all year. As Mario once said, Let's a' go! The music is good too.

FINAL EDIT UNTIL MORE CONTENT IS RELEASED: I finished chapter one (the entirety of what's available in EA) in around four hours on Hard and I think it's great. Despite this, I stand by all my statements of the game thus far and think you should hold off on purchasing. The game just gets going and it ends. With the issues I had in the very early game I can't confidently recommend the game in it's current state. Very promising though. Keep an eye on it. EDIT: I've learned some things while continuing to play. I'm not gonna edit the entirety of the review, since the game is still extremely punishing through RNG, but the corrections are as follows: 1. Mobs do drop gold, but very little, and the amount you earn is subtracted by your mercs. 2. Spears can attack the back line. 3. Maces/axes crush armor (gray bar) which is KEY to defeating armored units. 4. On Hard, dumping points in Grit for the first few levels is CRUCIAL. 5. Put everybody in front row for the intro sequence only, really. 6. Have someone with mace (mandatory imo) to try and stun an enemy every round & crush armor. 7. Bosses get more turns if your team has low agility. Do not ignore agility. Aside from these things my criticisms of the game still largely stand. I managed to get a foothold and will continue playing, but having spent almost six hours through a cycle of RNG-driven failure made me really iffy about recommending it. I am a stubborn Souls player, which is the only reason why I continued to play after suffering crushing defeat after crushing defeat. ============================================================= I don't recommend it until some major balance changes take place - particularly in the very early portion of the game on Hard difficulty to lessen how absolutely devastating the difficulty is and how unfair RNG can be. It's... okay? Hard is too hard and Normal is too easy. Like half of the time I've spent playing it was restarting runs because RNG just completely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ me early on Hard. The first major boss was dealing like 80% of my teammates life and doing it two times in a row, nuking my party in about two turns. It's nice that the first companion you find is the opposite of whatever you have, but the second companion is randomly selected from a pool. There's zero checks in place to ensure this individual will actually have a place in your party. Using a crossbow? They might also have a crossbow. Have a mage? They can be a mage as well. I found myself simply restarting because this second character was very likely to be completely dead weight. The game gives you JUUUUUST not enough gold to hire someone from the mercenary board as well, and even if by some miraculous chance you could afford someone, they're garbage. The first pool of mercs you can hire have a high likelihood of having a permanent injury. Like having a missing leg with melee. If a spear user displaces that merc they are completely worthless for the rest of the fight. Item heal-botter. The game has this really weird system where you're actively punished for having a big party, and they tell you to be smart about your party layout so you can actually make gold. Despite this, a party of four felt like the BARE MINIMUM I could manage to progress with and any time I found gold it was eaten up by my party before i could spend it. At least you can get a party of four without spending anything. Good luck keeping that gold to actually buy anything, though. Even if you did, the stats on all of it is absolutely atrocious, and you'd be better off loading up on healing items & camp kits. Guarding with a shield did ♥♥♥♥ all most the time, but armored enemies would be taking 0-2 damage when I hit them. I assume bludgeoning damage is more effective against armor, but the damage on the mace is so ass in general I couldn't justify using it. Magic is... interesting. Every spell cast has a chance to fail, and it's neat and all, but the starting spell is pretty terrible and you can (and will) fail to cast that spell for multiple rounds. When I fought the first miniboss in the starter area, my mage almost killed themselves through spell failure alone. I decided to stop using spells until getting a bunch of points in magic. Starting off, I found it more effective to just put all of my characters in the front row so the damage was spaced out and melee with my caster with the rest of the team. Targeting limbs is cool, but when the enemy team has two shield users in front you're in for a bad time no matter what your team is which is why I insisted on having an archer & mage - to take down the back line while the knights just spammed guard back-to-back. Destroying a limb can completely ruin the enemy team, but early on missing a single attack can be the difference between skidding across the finish line or getting completely demolished. Lower % chance to hit means you risk everything to MAYBE hit the limb, or you wasted a turn when you could've just done damage instead. It oftentimes took multiple hits to destroy a limb as well. Maybe later in the game it's more reliable. Early game it was not. You can not really grind either. I tried and enemies just kept getting lucky hits and downing my team no matter the armor or party layout. My caster got a head injury which made spellcasting harder to do, and my archer got his eye gouged out. When I managed to win fights, the exp was so miniscule I'd probably have to spend literal hours in the first zone to gain two levels. Run out of healing items? ♥♥♥♥ you, the mobs don't drop any gold. Did anybody on the dev team actually complete the game on Hard? It says it's "the way it's meant to be played." I'm pretty competent at turn-based RPGs, and I understood how to deal with situations, but RNG was just too heavily skewed against me and I never managed to get a solid foothold. Normal is just a complete cakewalk, hands-down. I used the same party (Dual daggers & Greatsword in front, Archer & Mage in the back) and completely shat on everything the game threw at me. I barely had to heal, and once I actually got a healing spell I never needed to use items. I'm setting it down for a few months while they iron out the finer details. But until then, I'd strongly recommend you wait to buy it. Hard is super masochistic and normal feels like "Story" difficulty.

Another absolute banger from Lovely Hellplace; it's a crunchy, dark fantasy hellscape brought to life in a nostalgic and unique style alongside an engaging turn-based battle system. Truly looking forward to what the finished game will be like, but so far, it's enchanting.

this is great, gameplay-wise, stylistically and narratively, but more dialogue needs to happen with your fellow party members. they just repeat the same thing at the campfire (And in the cuvas baths, why cant they say something simple like "ew its smelly in here" or something, just anything?). and also, with what little lore Selgair gave us, they sound like a really interesting character! but they just repeat the same thing. thats a couple of examples. more dialogue pleeeease. something like when we enter a new area, they comment on it when we go to the campfire, or maybe there could be an option to speak to them *during* gameplay? a great thing that happened was talking with the person in the weird tree place (forget the names). that person commented on one of my party members (i think tozeur) and tozeur reacted because shes a mage. that was brilliant. I will recommend this game, but i do hope the dev sees this, because i would love some character development, even if they end up dying, yknow.
