A very enjoyable CRPG with a Roman setting. Well worth picking up if that idea appeals. Positives: - Solid tactical combat with multiple classes - Charmingly faux-thentic version of Ancient Rome with a lot of attention to detail - An interesting story with a few twists and turns - Choices do matter, and you can solve situations in a few different ways usually - Fun and appealing characters, many with some depth to them - Strategy-lite gameplay on the world map - Character progression and equipment systems rewarding exploration - Vorenus and Pullo - 5/7 perfect score Negatives - Sometimes clunky UI, particularly in the strategy sections, and camera issues - Over-reliance on consumable items and status effects - you'll get very sick of fire - The main villains feel simultaneously under and over-written to the point their motivation and actions become harder to understand instead of easier - The game overall, and Act 3 especially, feel like they could and should have been longer, particularly with more interaction with party members. Between Act 1 being essentially on-rails and Act 3's plot being truncated, the feeling of plot compression can leave things feeling under-cooked. - Similarly, the strategy-lite elements could easily have become more prominent - fighting Pompey in the civil war and having an expanding level of involvement in command could have been very fun - The plot doesn't seem to respect the protagonist, and often makes them look a bit stupid so the story can continue. Act 3's Ambiorix mission in particular has red flags all over and your character walks straight into it with no possible alternatives. - There's no new game + or endless mode that could add replayability beyond the alternate endings In general, the negatives I've listed here are trifling, Expeditions Rome is a fun, well-crafted game with a historical setting that's quite rare in this genre, and it would be great to see it revisited or expanded on, and I'm probably going to pick up the sister games to try too.

A very engaging tactical RPG! The combat is deep and satisfying, and I really enjoyed the campaign strategy elements and decision-making. The writing and setting are a massive breath of fresh air for the genre, though the pacing drags a bit in the middle acts. If you like tactical turn-based combat with a historical spin, this is well worth your time.

I always liked Expeditions, and I think Logic Artists created a solid experience with this one! It's not an easy task to write a narrative something like this and I admire how beautiful they did! Although the overall gameplay experience was good, there's still a but... And that is the quests called Pacify Region which is you have to complete to conquer the area. I don't have much complaints all of the encounters but some of their design was not something I expected from a game like this one... because they are just horrible and I believe poorly designed; you just can't increase or decrease the difficulty of the encounters from the beginning to the end of the game. If you want to give me a challenge, just throw it between the levels, just don't scale it through the game! I must add something else that is needs to be known though; the quest called Ambiorix's Warning is an absolute game design failure. Unacceptable!

TL;DR this way too long, has many very poorly thought out mechanics and feels like it has never been playtested. No, the game has some major issues and major annoyances it needs to fix before I recommend buying it. One example is how every time you want to conquer a region you have to do a very boring turn based 6V6 mission. And often times you have to use your B-team which can be annoying since you can not exactly choose them on their skills/class, you need to choose them often based on their perks Which serves as annoying gameplay mechanic especially since theyre often underlevelled. But this is by design because this game was made by apes. When you end the first act the game briefly tells you you have to make 2 teams. They give an EXTREMELY vague description of what they should do which directly becomes irrelevant. Since their tasks are only for the first of the 3 Battles they partake in. Their damage carries over and if they got downed they will join the new level with 1Hp... Not a lot of characters can actually heal so this is a very annoying character. This didnt happen with me but if you barely made the first levels that means you will be stuck completing the rest with 1 hp which is impossible or you have to restart 6 battles again like a shmuck. After which you get an extremely long and boring part of you being a civilian. After which it's more walking around more boring turn based battles. One of which they make it obvious you're stepping into an ambush but it does not give you the option to refuse giving your weapons and skipping it when you're actually at the door. You had to make this decision a few minutes before and know the roman word for a dagger.. Also if you dont equip your daggers and assume the game still allows you to use em. Tough luck time for a restart.. When you finish this battle theres a few more UNTIL you can finally move around the map again. The kicker is now I have to pay money to get the same preatorians and commanders I already bought before (and they lost all their equipment). But since I levelled them they became more expensive. This is after the game recommends me to buy bandages for a lot of money & I end up finding a bunch 2 minutes later for free. I just had an event where there was a secret tomb, i send my most agile preatorian to inspect it and specifically ask her to go the safe route. She get's Extremely injured and almost dies and I have to leave the tomb. And that's how I missed out on Alexander the greats spear. More Notes: I just arrived in Africa and the enemy commanders seem to get so many buffs that whatever I do feels pointless. Combat is not hard just frustrating (yeah please pit my team of level 7 characters against a team of level 10-14 characters. I'm not underlevelled because i used these characters for nearly every fight. And had to remove my commanders and put them in a preatorian role? Which makes no ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ sense. I could not recruit stronger preatorians because A) Not enough spots to keep the abilities I want (why the ♥♥♥♥ is there a cap of praetorians and why is it so low). B) I did not have the resources to make the upgrade until I completed the fight. C) Not enough afforementioned spots to comfortably experiment. Somehow both the team battles and grand scale PVP feel extremely weak while these are the parts of the game that should shine. Another side note but why do I have to physically interact with certain camp upgrades to do certain tasks. Why can some of them manage every other upgrade, while some can only do 1 task. Why can you only manage characters from the camp and not the world map, why can i not assign preatorians/swap commanders from anywhere. This game feels like it is made to waste your time and it hates efficient and clear character/camp management. QOL is ♥♥♥♥. I love ancient and especially Roman history. I really tried to give this a fair chance (look at the amount of playtime). But this game is just not my cup of tea. Also I guess all egyptians are black now for some reason? So are 60% of romans apparently? I didn't notice when I visited those countries irl. Shame. This game has a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ and im not here for it.

This game was a pleasant surprise! I am very much a fan of CRPGs (Baldurs Gate 3, Rogue Trader, Pathfinder Kingmaker etc) and Tactical Turned Based Games (Xcom 1/2), as well as a Historical Hobbyist, so this game had always called to me, but I had put it off for a while for some reason. Combat is good, fun, and the variety of 'classes' and abilities are wildly different and uncomplicated, but interesting and have obvious roles within fights which work well together or alone. There is definitely a way to 'build' characters which I am sure those who enjoy making the most optimal build will love, and as a more casual player, I wasn't overwhelmed and found them easy to understand and 'master'. Some of the enemy abilities, particularly those that could 'hide' or avoided attacks of opportunity were annoying at worst, but I never felt unfairly challenged. The 'Campaign Maps' were vast but became repetitive, and I never felt as if I struggled to take over the maps each act. The magic of the first act and map was lost already by the second and third acts, but it was more of a 'neutral' feel towards them rather than feeling like they made the game boring. It worked within the game, but there was a point where going from one end of the map to the other was tedious, especially when you had multiple legions to command. The story was very compelling... at first (and honestly for a good 30 hours). I was very invested, enjoying the 'alternate history' approach of the game. I just felt that the second and third acts started really strong and dropped off a cliff nearer to their ends, and as soon as I was advised to "Act in an unexpected way" and so I thought the game was telling me that this was what I should be doing, only to realise too late that my choices were working against me. I realised too late that the writing was Mass Effect 1 in style, where the decisions affected the recap at the end rather than the story as it played out. Overall, I would give this game a solid 7/10. I was never bored, though at times I think I was more frustrated, but these were short segments which did not diminish my enjoyment of the game overall. I can understand the criticism towards the decision to kill off a major history character right at the start of the game, but I personally enjoy that we as the player effectively took on his role in history (to an extent). Roma Invincta!

Too much hand-holding for something that "lets you shape the future of Rome". I felt like being funnelled the whole time, and it grew tedious after a while. Felt like I could just click at whatever is highlighted and spend time like that, not having to think much at all. Victory conditions are also a bit silly and break immersion (burn two ships and suddenly everyone just stops fighting and runs off in their separate direction). Also voicing breaks immersion as they're using modern English with pseudo-roman pronunciation, id est it sounds just weird. Fights on their own are OK, but become boring once you grasp the mechanics. Visually beautiful game though, but give me Kenshi over this empty polish any day.
