F1 2012 is a Formula One racing game that captures one of the sport’s most memorable modern seasons through a combination of licensed championship content, demanding driving mechanics, changing weather, and several different ways to race. Developed by Codemasters and published by Codemasters, the game focuses heavily on creating the sensation of participating in the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship rather than simply offering a collection of extremely fast cars and circuits. Although its presentation naturally reflects its age, the fundamental racing experience remains remarkably engaging. The official championship content is a major attraction. Cars, teams, drivers, and circuits associated with the 2012 season give the game a distinct identity, especially for Formula One enthusiasts who remember that period. The Circuit of the Americas is an important addition, bringing the Austin venue into the series alongside familiar international circuits. Tracks are more than visual recreations because their different layouts force players to reconsider braking points, racing lines, acceleration, overtaking opportunities, and setup decisions. Driving provides a satisfying compromise between accessibility and simulation. Formula One cars feel exceptionally quick and responsive, yet maintaining control requires considerably more finesse than simply accelerating whenever possible. Poor braking can destroy an otherwise excellent lap, while aggressive throttle application can make corner exits difficult. KERS and DRS contribute additional tactical considerations and help recreate some of the defining characteristics of Formula One during this era. Difficulty assists make the game approachable for players without extensive racing simulation experience. Beginners can rely on assistance while becoming familiar with the circuits and handling model, whereas experienced drivers can disable those aids and face a much less forgiving challenge. This scalability is important because F1 2012 rewards precision. Completing several consistently fast laps can be more valuable than producing one spectacular lap followed by repeated mistakes. The Young Driver Test provides a useful introduction to the fundamentals. Rather than assuming every player understands how to control a Formula One car, it presents structured exercises that teach essential techniques. It also fits naturally into the fantasy of beginning a professional racing career. While experienced players may see it primarily as an introductory section, newcomers can use it to understand the unusual braking performance and responsiveness of these cars before entering serious competition. Career mode provides the most substantial long-term experience. Its five-season structure gives races a sense of progression and encourages the player to think beyond isolated victories. Qualifying performance, race results, championship ambitions, and improving personal driving ability combine to create an enjoyable motorsport journey. The surrounding presentation is less elaborate than that found in newer Formula One games, but its relative simplicity keeps attention centered on what happens behind the wheel. Season Challenge is a good alternative for anyone who wants progression without committing to a lengthy conventional championship. Its shorter ten-race format creates a faster-moving campaign that is easier to complete. Champions Mode provides scenario-driven challenges involving the championship-winning drivers who were competing during the period. These events add variety and offer focused objectives rather than simply asking players to complete another standard Grand Prix. Time Attack further strengthens the single-player package. It strips away much of the complexity of an actual race and turns improvement into the primary objective. Learning exactly where to brake, how much speed can be carried through a corner, and when to accelerate becomes addictive when tenths of a second separate a good lap from a better one. It highlights how satisfying the underlying handling can be when players dedicate time to mastering it. Dynamic weather is another standout feature. Rain can fundamentally transform a race by reducing grip, extending braking distances, and forcing drivers to reconsider their approach. Weather systems can affect different areas of a circuit rather than producing perfectly uniform conditions everywhere. A partially wet track creates uncertainty because the player must judge changing grip while deciding whether conditions justify a different tire strategy. This unpredictability makes races feel considerably more alive. Graphically, the game understandably falls behind contemporary racing titles. Lighting, environmental complexity, textures, character models, and some presentation elements reveal its age. Even so, the cars remain attractive, circuits are recognizable, and the sensation of speed is convincing. Engine and mechanical audio reinforce the intensity, particularly when racing from perspectives that place the player closer to the car. Multiplayer was originally an important component, supporting competitive online racing and cooperative championship play. Its official online services have since been discontinued, meaning those features can no longer be considered part of the practical modern experience. This is a notable loss, but there remains enough single-player material to make the game worthwhile for existing owners interested primarily in racing against AI opponents, completing challenges, improving lap times, or revisiting the 2012 season. Steam Deck compatibility is officially categorized as Playable rather than fully Verified. Performance with the default graphics configuration is considered suitable, and the game can run successfully on SteamOS. However, handheld players should expect compromises. Some functionality is not fully accessible through the default controller configuration, touchscreen interaction or a community controller layout may occasionally be useful, and text entry can require manually opening the virtual keyboard. Some interface text may also appear small, while certain prompts can display keyboard, mouse, or non-Steam Deck controller icons. It is therefore functional on the Deck, but the experience is less seamless than a fully optimized handheld release. F1 2012 ultimately remains an enjoyable representation of Formula One from its era. The handling rewards careful driving, dynamic weather creates meaningful uncertainty, the official championship content provides historical appeal, and the variety of Career, Season Challenge, Champions Mode, Young Driver Test, and Time Attack gives solo players several reasons to return. Aging visuals, discontinued multiplayer services, uncertain Steam Deck behavior, and the game's lack of current Steam availability limit its modern accessibility, but the racing itself still demonstrates considerable quality. For existing owners and Formula One enthusiasts interested in revisiting the 2012 championship, it remains a compelling piece of racing-game history. Rating: 8/10

I don't have 2013, but this is the best F1 game by codemasters I've played at least of the V8 period and maybe - the entire franchise. The interface is clean. It still works on modern hardware with full controller support. There's still a huge difference between intermediate and professional difficulties - which is annoying, because in my first career season I'd like the difficulty to be between these two until I go up to harder difficulties when I get into the faster cars. It's a crying damn shame that the older F1 titles are not available to be sold anymore because of licensing/EA. These games also serve as time capsules into their respective seasons and eras and imo should be preserved.
