I missed out on this game back in the day. Even though it had been sitting in my Steam library for years, I always hesitated to jump in because I found its art style a bit too childish and fairytale-like. But now, in the Year of the Horse, I decided to 100% every single Final Fantasy game on Steam, so its time finally arrived. Overall, I was wrong to write it off, though the seriousness of the story sadly couldn't overshadow everything. Being the final PS1 entry, visually it actually felt like a slight step back compared to FF8. I didn't find the combat system all that exciting either—what worked so well in the 16-bit classics (equip gear > learn skill) felt more like a chore here rather than genuine fun. The Synthesis system was neat at first, but it never really gave me that itch to grind for hours just to get a slightly better weapon. Playing this back-to-back right after FF7 and FF8, I have to say IX hasn't aged quite as well. While 8 blended its CGI cutscenes with gameplay seamlessly (the mechanical spider chase scene in Dollet immediately comes to mind), things just didn't come together as smoothly here. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to be heartless or hypocritical by judging a 26-year-old game by modern standards—this is simply my honest personal experience. That being said, the story is genuinely good. It takes a terribly long time to kick into gear, but there's no denying that Vivi, Kuja, and Zidane were given such incredible character arcs and motivations. I completely understand why this is the absolute top FF for so many people; if I had experienced it back when it first released, I'm sure I'd hold a very different opinion of it today. As for the minigames: the card game was a soul-crushing chore that I didn't enjoy at all. On the flip side, hiding a secret Blackjack game in the main menu was a brilliant and fun little touch. At the end of the day, it's a deeply lovable, charming game that I can easily recommend. Still, I don't see myself longing to replay it every two or three years like I do with FF6 or FF7. Ultimately, the central theme of Final Fantasy IX revolves around Life, Death, and Memories. Every character is searching for the meaning of existence—from Vivi with his limited lifespan and Zidane discovering his nature as a clone, to Garnet coping with the loss of her mother, and Kuja driven mad by the fear of death. The answer the game delivers is beautiful: life is precious, and we truly go on living as long as our memories endure within those we love. Respect paid. Now, off to attempt the Excalibur II run—let's see if I can pull it off on the first try.

Com certeza um dos jogos mais impactante que joguei nos últimos tempos, historia muito bem escrita e com personagens muito carismáticos. A trilha sonora desse jogo não tem nem o que falar, e um hino!!! O sistema de batalha por turno e muito bem feitinho, com as habilidades sendo atreladas e armas e armaduras, o próprio sistema de Pictos de Clair Obscur foi totalmente inspirado no sistema do FF IX, aqui e praticamente a mesma coisa, você aprende a habilidade que esta atrelada a arma/armadura e a partir dai você equipa essa habilidade utilizando os pontos requeridos da mesma, isso possibilita varias builds interessantes. Em fim, Final Fantasy IX e uma obra atemporal que todo fan de RPG/JRPG deveria jogar...

Literally my favorite Final Fantasy with the most human story I've ever been told. Made me fall in love with RPG's and JRPG's as a whole. 9/5 stars.

Old but gold. Don’t overthink it, just buy it and play it. Final Fantasy IX is a timeless classic that still holds up incredibly well today. A beautiful story, memorable characters, an amazing soundtrack, and that unmistakable Final Fantasy charm. Absolutely worth experiencing.

​'To be a memory in the minds of others is to live forever' This was one of the most unexpexcted (yeah, silly me expected something else) truly tender and philosophical explorations of life, identity and also mortality I've experienced in media so far. ​Vivi’s journey alone broke my heart and gently stitched it back together. The game occasionally made me feel like a child again, but it always managed to speak directly to my adult heart aswell and had me cry both tears of sorrow and joy. Glad i haven't postponed my playthrough any further. It's really one of the best FF games, perhaps one of the best RPGs ever. Timeless is all i can say.

Difícil comentar sobre esse jogo, porque ele causa mais sensações do que palavras conseguem descrever. O final, combinado com a trilha sonora do Nobuo Uematsu, cria um peso colossal que torna o jogo um dos melhores finais não só da franquia, mas também do gênero. Tudo isso com uma estrutura simples: uma história básica e personagens carismáticos, cada um com sua própria personalidade. É bom ver o que pode ser feito com coisas simples para introduzir questões profundas, como o significado da vida e a aceitação da mortalidade, sem precisar apelar para algo supercomplexo. Além disso, achei a gameplay, de certa forma, bem acessível, ainda mais para alguém como eu, que está acostumado com jogos baseados em turnos. Só acho importante ressaltar que jogar esse jogo usando o mod Moguri é indispensável.

This is definitely one of my favorite Final Fantasy games, the cast is 90% great (not an Eiko fan) and probably has the best vibes for an FF title. I love this game. My only complaint is that the turn based combat is a bit sluggish, but it definitely didn't ruin the game for me. Big smile on my face throughout the game :)

"La auténtica joya de la corona de la era PlayStation." Mi juego favorito. Pros: Yitán, Vivi y una de las mejores historias sobre la vida y la amistad jamás escritas; la banda sonora de Nobuo Uematsu es gloria pura; estéticamente envejeció hermoso (y con el Moguri Mod en PC se ve espectacular). Contras: El ritmo de las batallas por turnos es algo lento si vienes de juegos modernos (aunque los aceleradores de la versión de Steam ayudan bastante). 10/10 — Si Vivi no te llega al corazón, es que no tienes uno.
