Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles

1 / 8

Ivalice—a kingdom blessed by the light of the gods and ruled by the Two-headed Lion. A year after her defeat to Ordallia in the Fifty Years' War, the king succumbed to malady, leaving a mere boy of two to ascend the throne.

Whoever was named regent would rule in truth, and thus emerged two rival candidates: dukes Goltanna and Larg, whose deeds during the war had earned them great renown. Goltanna the Black Lion and Larg the White Lion were destined to clash, and the resulting conflict would come to be known as the War of the Lions.

Against this backdrop appear Ramza, third son of House Beoulve, one of Ivalice's leading military families, and his childhood companion Delita, a commoner raised amongst nobles. As they endeavor to chart a course through this tumultuous age, a mighty current draws them ever closer to the abyss.

Lead your party in exhilarating encounters where strategic positioning and forward planning determine the outcome. Use the varied terrain of 3D battlefields to your advantage, skillfully manipulate the turn order, and victory will be yours for the taking.

Combine a wide variety of jobs and abilities to craft your very own strategies.

As your party members grow, they will gain access to more jobs, each with its own unique abilities. Once learned, abilities can be used even after changing to another job. With over 20 jobs to master—including white mage, black mage, dragoon, and many others from the FINAL FANTASY series—and hundreds of abilities to learn, you have the freedom to experiment and discover the combinations that best suit your party. Chocobos and other creatures can also be tamed and led into battle.

With improved graphics, fully voiced dialogue, and refined gameplay, the enhanced version provides the perfect way to immerse yourself in the world of Ivalice. Along with the fine-tuning of several features and battle mechanics, the inclusion of the more accessible "Squire" difficulty setting makes the enhanced version an excellent starting point for first-time players.

The classic version unites the graphics and gameplay of the original 1997 version with the renowned War of the Lions translation for a unique way to experience this beloved title.

The Enhanced version of the game supports a wide variety of controller options.

It also supports keyboard and mouse controls.

The Classic version of the game only supports XInput controllers.

Keyboard controls are also supported, but mouse controls are not supported.

Put this on my steamdeck for a long roadtrip and it wouldn't let me play unless Steam was in Online mode and I obviously wasn't going to get online on the highway. Didn't this used to be a PSP game??? They put DRM on a $50 PSP game. ♥♥♥♥ that. I even booted it up the night before to make sure it worked. The game is good, I have no complaints about the game itself. I think "playable in offline mode" should be part of the steamdeck verification checklist and this game shouldn't pass.

Glad this exists on PC. Great story, janky but fun battle system, and some all timer music. Now if we could just bring the Tactics Advance titles to PC.

TLDR: A richly told tactical RPG with a classic job system and strong voice acting, though missing past content and some uneven balance and dated structure. Still a worthwhile return to a genre staple. PROS: ➕Contains 2 games - FFT remaster (Ivalice Chronicles) and FFT classic ➕Classic FF job system ➕Good narrative ➕Fully voice acted CONS: ➖Some of the jobs are terrible/poorly balanced ➖Auto-save states are immensely confusing trying to find the right one for who’s turn it is ➖Not a “Definitive edition” - missing War of the Lions content Content (Game world/Narrative) – [7/10] The game world consists of a world map and battle map. The world map is a simple overhead view of all the destinations you can visit, of which there are maybe around 50. The battles occur in specific areas on the world map, there’s maybe around 30 different battle maps consisting of different biomes. There’s not a lot of exploration, just some occasional vague side quests or random treasure to be found through abilities, but nothing grand. The narrative is pretty good. It’s about how history in Ivalice has been rewritten, leaving out a very important character as he uncovers the lies told by the church. It’s a story filled with political intrigue and the casualties of war mixed well with typical Final Fantasy references. It does devolve a bit into the typical “Good guy must stop bad guy from destroying world” towards the end, but considering it's from the late ‘90s, it’s still very good. I adore the parallels to real world issues, how it’s very likely to spread a lie instead of an inconvenient truth. Gameplay (Mechanics/Difficulty) – [7/10] The general gameplay loop is to navigate to a place on the world map, watch a scene, and do a turn-based battle. The main thing I want to bring up is the job system. This is classic Final Fantasy with the jobs, and a massive part of what makes Tactics so good. The flexibility to choose a main job with a secondary ability as well as a few passives opens the game up to good build potential, even if some of the jobs (Archer) are not as great as others. Still, the job system in Tactics might be one of the best representations of the job system in any Final Fantasy title to date. Other than the excellent job system, the main mechanical focus is on the “Tactical” combat. I don’t consider it very tactical as much as it’s just turn-based. There isn’t much deep thought or creativity you can use in the midst of combat without specific preparation of your job setup. I think this is the big advantage that Tactics: Ogre has over FFT - actual tactical combat. In FFT you can grind levels and job points to make any story battles easier, while in Tactics: Ogre, as annoying as it can be, you’re hard capped on levels, creating a much more balanced experience. I think that FFT is a better game, but it’s not tactically profound. As for difficulty, the game is fairly easy, especially when you can grind levels freely. There is a big difficulty spike towards the end of the game, where the game almost expects you to abuse the few ways you can become overpowered. This is amplified by the fact that the final battles take place in a multi-fight dungeon you cannot escape from. Technical (Graphics/Performance) – [6/10] The graphics are good, especially for a game originally released in 1998 and this is not a remake. I would say the graphics are around PS2-era fidelity. I played on the Steam Deck, and performance was good, a consistent 60 FPS, though some of the text is small and hard to read. I noticed no bugs. 1440p @ 240hz | installed on SSD Audio – [7/10] The music is great, but from more of a nostalgic timeless aspect. I have very fond memories of the music so it holds a special place in my heart. While the music is good, the true improvement here over the original is the voice acting. All dialogue is voice acted, and it's good. Replay Factor (Longevity) – [4/10] The replay value could be better, but it’s improved over the original release. There’s not a lot of endgame content, I think a few sidequests and one optional dungeon. There is NG+ but the story doesn’t have enough changes to really warrant it. Achievements are good. Not much else. Final Verdict – [7/10] Final Fantasy Tactics - The Ivalice Chronicles (FFT-IC) is a nice love letter to original FFT fans like myself. I have fond memories of dumping hundreds of hours into FFT over summer break from school, so revisiting this game has been a joy. That being said, I do wish after over 25 years that SE would stop flirting with the idea and just release either a full on remake, or a sequel to FFT. FFT-IC is a very good version, but not the best, which is a shame, since this was SE’s opportunity to take all the content from FFT’s previous versions - War of the Lions and/or the mobile ports, and combine them into one big package, but that didn’t happen here. FFT-IC is missing content that was already previously released with WotL and is missing the graphical upgrades of the mobile port. That all being said, I am still thrilled to be able to play FFT on PC after way too long without it, and give further acknowledgement to the good performance on Steam Deck. Back in the day of ‘98, I would have given this a 10/10, but in 2026, even this new release is starting to show its age. The jobs could use some newer refined abilities, and the gameplay could be more interesting with actual tactical options, like what Larian does with their turn-based games. Despite some grievances, I easily give FFT-IC a recommendation. It's still a great game that is worth experiencing to this day. Recommend? (Price) Yes $50 base is too much for a port with missing content. I would say $30 is a much better price point, with a sale of $20.

final fantasy tactics is genuinely one of the most compelling games i've played in my entire life. i had been playing a bunch of the gameboy advance fire emblem games and wanted to try something more in-depth, and since i'd read that the remaster has infinitely more QoL than the original version of FFT, i went and bought this game on sale; since then, i've played this, the original, and WotL, and thoroughly loved each and every playthrough. the class system is so incredibly in-depth that i don't even mind grinding by throwing rocks at my own units; the feeling of being several levels ahead of a story battle with a perfect strategy is unmatched by anything else. the story itself is timeless in my opinion; ramza's experience is thoroughly unique. i could easily recommend this game to anyone who has the patience for this type of game; my only gripe, as anyone else might also have, would be chapter 3 wiegraf and the ungodly amount of physical parry/evasion rate around the end of the game.

I adore this version of the game. The added voice acting and mid-fight conversations. chef's kiss, no notes. I've played ever iteration of this game. This one is the best. The rebalanced jobs made me use entirely new party compositions, and even the generic characters had personalities. It made Ivalice feel alive.

Maybe the best Final Fantasy game Definitely a great story and one of the best voice overs of any game EVER to support it Combat is fun and challenging, all while the game respects your time with many QoL features that just feel good The job system is absolutely awesome
