Final Fantasy XI Online is a difficult game to review for several reasons, not least of which is the fact that few games similar to it exist today. With no cultural touchpoints to draw on and an thorough unlikelyhood that anybody reading this will ever play FFXI, I struggle to come up with anything to say beyond "I like it." Furthermore, this review is only of the base game of Final Fantasy XI - the "Nations" storyline - which features little in the way of story or characters. Put simply, FFXI is an old-school MMORPG, from a time before World of Warcraft cemented the genre into what it is today, and so it doesn't fit into the mould of other MMOs that exist today. It has no quest markers, no guidance, and very little handholding and tutorialisation. It is a game that relies entirely on community efforts like guilds and wikis to onboard new players. Even though strides have been made to make the game easier to get into, such as NPC party members and faster leveling methods, FFXI is still at its heart a hardcore MMO that focuses more on player-driven discovery and adventure than on its own narratives. This approach is incredibly effective at making FFXI feel like a journey even when the story has little to offer - the adventure is in figuring out how the game's systems work, how to navigate the world, and so on. Unfortunately, this magic is lost today, now that the game is effectively "solved." Certain aspects of FFXI are so esoteric that it would be hopeless to figure them out on one's own, but because anybody interested in the game has already been playing for decades, the answers are already known, and discovering them isn't an adventure anymore. Still, with a world as well-realized as Vana'diel, music as good as Naoshi Mizuta's score, and an atmosphere steeped in early 2000s nostalgia and a love for Final Fantasy's legacy, it's difficult not to fall for the magic trick FFXI pulls. Final Fantasy XI is one of the worst-aged, intensely flawed games I've played in a long time. I can't stop thinking about it. I love it. 8/10.

Would not recommend i couldn't even get past the Login page they made it way to difficult
