For how popular this game once seemed, the wider world only really cared about it as a cudgel against the sonic series of the time- the reception to the sequel is the clearest sign of that. It's a real shame! This game's so much more than a sonic clone- it has a rich lineage of all the greats of the 16-bit era, from Treasure's titles to Ristar to Rocket Knight. Even a little bit of SEGA Technical Institute's works feel present here. It's all threaded beautifully into a modern classic that sets itself apart with its vivid Chinese technofantasy setting and delicate balance between player freedom and cool setpieces. The narrative and characters also set it apart- revisiting this game, I was surprised to see how well constructed of a narrative it has compared to other games of its ilk. It's dripping in old internet anime furry webcomic-isms, but that could very well be considered a point of charm in the modern day. I personally enjoy it, at least. I mean, it's fundamentally a story about how you should never succumb to apathy no matter how uncool or foolish it seems to care about things. Doesn't the fact that it's caked in such "cringe" elevate that idea? The voice acting is something I will not begrudge anyone for disliking. The quality of performance is directly correlated to how easy a voice it is to do well- Brevon and Serpetine's VA (pardon me for not remembering their name off the top of my head) kills it with the archetypal evil overlord and underling, Sean Chiplock is serviceable as ever with his average anime coolguys, and Carol and Milla's VAs (again, don't know them off the top pf my head) fail to muster enough energy for the energetic young girls (though, to their credit, they were easily given the worst scripts out of the main cast). A notable exception is found with Dawn Bennet as Lilac, who very clearly gave it her all and greatly endeared me to the bleeding heart Ms. Heropants even if her work here is still a little amateurish. (Unfortunate that she doesn't want to associate with the character anymore, but I'll never blame someone for needing to uproot themself from the neurotic sonic fanbase) It's an important part of the game's identity, and its inconsistency really does noticeably hurt the game. If you care about the narrative of a platformer, that is. You can also just play on classic mode and ignore all of that. Visuals are another complicated matter. Sometimes it's hard to draw the line between an authentic 32X-esque look and genuine amateurishness- some sprites almost look pillowshaded, others make weird use of dithering. The most important characters- the main girls and the main villains- all look as fantastic as they need to, but a lot of the side characters falter both in design and spritework. I have to give special attention to Torque here, whose undisguised form is genuinely atrocious to look at. It's a big problem when the guy is a main character in every regard besides the fact that he got cut from the playable cast. My condolences to whichever unfortunate artist has to salvage him for FP3... which I estimate will happen roughly 10 to 100 years from now. Let me cope, alright? Oh, yeah, I couldn't find a good place to put this, but Brevon is a near perfect villain and a non-insignificant factor in why I like this game so much. He is horrible in ways that are just un-cartoonish enough to feel tangible yet exaggerated and thematically resonant enough to not be dull, is far cooler than any of his immediate inspirations, and maintains an impactful presence despite appearing very often. I really do love Lilac and her wife and daughter- i mean her besties, but I can't deny who the real star of the show is. Everything I didn't mention, from the overall size of the game to the soundtrack to the specificities of the gameplay, are self-evidently amazing and discussed at length by others. What I've been trying to convey here today, 12 years after release and 4 years after the sequel failed to find enough success to keep the series going, is that this game is still something special even in the current indie environment, and I urge anyone who hasn't played it yet to do so.

Review time! So small review section says hey this is a great alternative to Sonic games that has more of a focus on character skills and elements of combat than your typical 2D sonic game, the music and sprites are great, you get three playable characters all of who play differently and the game has a great amount of difficulties that even allowed my autistic sister who was interested in playing herself to enjoy it, (yay steam family share lol) with some great unique stages and enemy types this is a great time of a game dood! Okay bigger review, another tired one here but I'll do my best! So Freedom Planet is what I'll coin as a hog-like! Just kidding! But it is very much done in a sonic the hedgehog visual style and in some aspects gameplay too, the story being you are two gals who were delivering something? But Lilac sees someone in danger and decides to help! Quite the goody two-shoes protag we have here but Carol is having none of it and so depending on who you choose to start with it goes from there dood! I will focus on Lilac for a basic idea of how to play but each character does have their unique traits and gameplay style, Lilac is what I'd call a balanced type, you can jump. double jump float/glide using the X/A button, attack using the square/X button, which can be changed somewhat based on a directional input and if you are in the air or not, test it out a little if ya wanna discover it and how each girl plays and finally the B/circle button is for specials of which Lilacs is a dash which damages enemies and grants temp invincibility, some nice variety there and that's just one character dood! stages have a lot of fun obstacles, thankfully not spikes that suddenly stop you or a copious amount of instant death pits, (bless you Freedom planet devs) although the game is not devoid of that but they don't abuse it and I frankly give big points to games like that, especially if they have a lives system as it seems...honestly cheap at that point difficulty wise, there's even unique gimmicks and areas that only certain characters can go, heck there's two entirely unique stages depending on who you go which is always nice dood. The game has items strewn around, some only one character can get, others are things like shields or gems/jewels that boost your meter if it's empty, I neglected to mention it but meter allows you to use your specials which recharge slowly over time otherwise, there's even collectables which unlock gallery pieces such as music, art and voice clips dood! The games designed in an interesting way to me too, you can either take it slow, take out enemies and search for collectables in rather sizeable stages or do a mad dash to the end, do well with Carol and it's a blast running through for a certain reason, I'll let ya'all find out on that front, it makes it feel like two different games in a weird ways, also there are 4 difficulties, casual you regenerate health (sis was loving it lol) easy I wager you take less damage, there's normal and then hard, the game can be quite difficult even on hard if you don't use skills well but when ya do it's a crazy good time against bosses and enemies dood. The only thing's left to talk about are how there's three mode, story which has all the talking with the worlds characters, (fully voiced and pretty good at that if you ask me) Arcade for those like my sister who don't care or understand so all into the action! And finally time attack mode which I guess is just freeplay? It's like arcade but shows your times essentially which is good if like me you went for the speed run achievements for fun dood. XD That's the gist of it! The game was a real fun time, some of the achievements feel more annoying to pull off like time wasters than fun (seeing as you essentially get one chance on some per level run) but luckily I don't really do those so I just had fun times all around, it's a direction I'd like to see these styles of games take more, particularly the abuse of instant death stuff like Sonic 2D games in particular have and with the accessibility to all kinds of players it's something I respect a lot, I'll be getting onto their second game tomorrow! But tonight was review of the first one, very important dood. ^-^ Thank you for reading and hope ya'all enjoy as much as I did if you buy dood!

If your a sonic fan this is a must have I give a 8.5. The cons first the game is challenging its usually in a fun way but there a lot of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ especially in the later levels. The aliens in armor that follow you have way too much health and the poison flower that has a range attack that takes up half the screen and respawn in second. My Biggest gripe with the game is that it doesn't save at your check point so you have to finish the level and beat the boss some levels have mid bosses. The game does have a arcade lives mechanic but its completely pointless you can continue as Meany times as you like and running out of lives starts a timer press start and continue back at the check point now the pros the game is a solid platformer similar to sonic but it does have its own identity. The games story like its gameplay is very fun to go through don't expect Shakespeare. the voice acting is a bit rough like watching a old anime. there a lot of different enemies and varied environments and platforming challenges like using a giant arrow as a platform.

Mediocri, a tratti cringe. Nessun personaggio mi è rimasto impresso in maniera positiva.

FP1 still holds up great to this day. Highly recommended for platformer lovers who want an emotional (and silly) story.
