Overall: 7/10 Story: There's no narrative in this game. Like, at all. The campaign is extremely bare-bones in terms of exposition, and follows a Flatout-style progression system where you race through different tier cups in an attempt the become the overall champion. I personally didn't mind this campaign structure, especially considering I finished the entire thing in about ten hours, but you need to understand what you're getting into going in. The only real sense of progression comes from buying new cars, upgrading them, and occasionally unlocking a new track. Even then, you're going to be playing the same handful of different event types on the same tracks across all three championship tiers. It's not unbearable given that you can finish the campaign and buy all cars in under double-digit hours. However, putting aside the constant introduction of new vehicles, the lack of any narrative structure or background context leaves this game feeling like an arcade game that you'd expect to have to insert quarters to play. Gameplay: First things first: I had constant problems trying to get wireless controllers like my Dualsense or my Steam controller to actually work with this game, and even when I did, I had to manually map out the buttons every time I re-launched the game. All the troubleshooting WOULD make this an unplayable experience. However, I also have a WIRED Xbox 360 controller and can confirm that using works perfectly and has automatic mapping for button prompts, so I'd recommend using one too if you have one. Now, the gameplay is honestly pretty fun given this game's age and the relatively simple gameplay loop. In today's era where combat racers have pretty much died out, the experience provided here is a visit to the past for all the right reasons because it serves as the perfect "junkfood game" vibe where you can just turn your brain off and play for a few hours while watching your favorite show in the background. As I said in the story section of this review, yes, the campaign is pretty short, but the gameplay never feels stale if that's all you plan on playing. The different events in the base game provide a fun and varied experience, and I think a large selling point is actually the fact that technically only half of them are actual races. Sure, the arcade driving is easily accessible and fun on it's own, but I personally didn't actually start to really like the races until I reached the cars available in the second championship tier, and that can take a couple hours. I had zero expectations for this game in particular going in, but games like this thrive on that high-octane sense of speed and destruction, and the fact that it takes over an hour to reach that vibe almost cause me to put the controller down. That would be if it weren't for the actual combat aspect of this game, which is actually fun from the very start. Whether you're straight up slamming your car into other racers or using the variety of actual guns that range from shotguns to missile launchers, there's always a satisfying sense of destruction from the beginning. And honestly, I'd argue that the combat events are more fun than the actual races too. Game modes like Deathmatch and Last Man Standing put the emphasis entirely on destroying your opponents and staying alive, while events like Destruction Derby strip away the weapons altogether and turn the fights into classic crash-and-bash mission. The driving is okay on it's own, but these other modes fully lean into what this game does best: chaotic vehicular combat, where the driving itself becomes a tool for attacking and outmaneuvering your opponents rather than simply getting from the starting line to the finish. I think it's a much more compelling use of the game's mechanics than racing alone, and it 100% helps keep the gameplay from becoming stale more than the driving mechanics alone do. World: One of the biggest reasons I think the combat events specifically help the overall experience from becoming stale more than the racing events is because of the normal level/race design. Not only are most of the settings/locations you race through pretty bland and generic, which leads to things starting to feel repetitive much earlier in the experience, but some of them also feel like they're not even designed with the driving mechanics in mind. The biggest example is how most of the shortcuts in the race events are basically useless. It feels like almost every "alternate" route is intended to just give you a different scenic view while racing because they never result in you being placed ahead of the competition. They're all either way too drawn out/wide or have rapid curves in the road so you can never get to a speed fast enough to make it an actual "shortcut." It's like the devs didn't understand that the literal point of a shortcut is to shave lap time and give you an advantage. I still think the areas provided are fun to race in, but they all ring of "good, not great" the entire time. There's just a few too many tracks that feel like their design doesn't lean fully into fluidity, and it's not exclusively shortcut-related either. So many tracks have an absurd amount of back-to-back turns with only a couple long stretches that give you that straight up "pedal-to-the-metal" vibe. I understand that this came out 13 years ago, but at times it feels like a lot of the tracks here were designed worse than those in other racing games, even of the 7th gen era. Visuals: Again, this game came out over 13 years ago, so I was very surprised to find out that it had ultrawide support and actually looks fairly solid on the highest settings, but the graphics are probably one of the most dated thing about the whole experience if I'm being 100% honest. Compared to modern games, I'd say the visuals are more akin to a decently-budgeted indie vibe. That's not to say the visuals are bad. It's just that, even for 2013, the graphics aren't top-of-the-line. The biggest drawbacks of the visuals are the technical limitations of the era it was released in. This game runs fine at high frame rates and I've had zero crashes, but the reality is that even on the highest settings, this game is an Xbox 360 era game at it's core, and it's still a very average looking game even with that context. There's lot of noticeable, almost distracting asset/texture pop-in even with max draw distance, and the art style is very generic. The best thing about the visuals is easily the vehicle designs and the deformation caused to cars from slamming into walls or other opponents. That, and the fact that there's actually a surprising amount of customization options, or more than I had expected. Upgrading cars is pretty much just "buy all upgrades, car goes faster" with zero downsides, but I appreciate that the customization lets you personalize your rides beyond a simple color swap. Music/Sound Design: The music and sound design are arguably the weakest aspect because, despite the general emphasis on high-energy racing, vehicular combat, and over-the-top destruction, the audio lacks the personality and memorability needed to make those elements feel as engaging as they should. Maybe I've become slightly spoiled by the standard of more modern soundscapes in games, but this one still sounds kinda flat at times. The sound effects aren't even outright terrible, but when dated audio is paired with an overall presentation that feels really generic, it leads to the feeling that the audio was designed to fill the space rather than give the game a distinctive identity. The music is nothing to write home about either. It does an okay job of keeping thing up-beat for a couple hours, but it quickly gets repetitive since there's not that many songs on the rock/metal-themed OST in the first place, and none of them are particularly great anyway. I personally ended up just muting things and playing Spotify by the 2 hour mark.

"Much better" (c). Slavic domain, u know.
