As an action-adventure game built around Japanese folklore and urban legends, Ghostwire: Tokyo actually has a pretty interesting premise. Replacing traditional firearms with gesture-based elemental attacks, while mixing in spirits, talismans, bows, and other mechanics, gives the game a combat system that is instantly recognizable and distinct. Unfortunately, the game once again falls into the same open-world formulaic trap that plagued The Evil Within 2. The combat system looks fairly diverse, with plenty of weapons and tools to choose from. The problem is that it never develops the kind of meaningful tactical decision-making found in games like Resident Evil or The Evil Within. As the protagonist levels up, their abilities quickly become overpowered, turning the enemies from potentially threatening opponents into little more than punching bags. Naturally, combat only gets more repetitive and tedious as the game goes on. The early game puts a lot of effort into showing off deserted streets, bizarre weather, supernatural encounters, and a huge amount of visual material drawn from Japanese folklore. And honestly, it works pretty well. The atmosphere is one of the strongest parts of the game—at least at first. Unfortunately, as the campaign progresses, increasingly frequent combat encounters slowly drain that atmosphere away. By the end, Ghostwire: Tokyo becomes something of a hollow open-world package that is neither particularly scary nor especially atmospheric. And speaking of open-world bloat, the open-world structure only makes the game's problems more obvious. Tokyo often feels like a city that is designed to look rich rather than actually offer meaningful variety. The map is packed with repetitive collectibles, purification activities, and combat encounters, while genuinely unique experiences that can meaningfully change how you play are few and far between. If Tango had taken the time to refine the core gameplay and cut the experience down to a carefully curated linear adventure, Ghostwire: Tokyo could have been one of the standout games in the Japanese urban-horror genre. But once again, Tango took an absolutely fantastic premise and turned it into a boring open-world checklist. 5/10

Well... I liked most of the game. But, as many other reviewers who are trying to be somewhat on point, I need to start with the major turn-offs. First, the game is based on Japanese culture. You may not be a fan, but at least it should not put you off by default. Because some players can't stand games with too much J-stuff. Second, the game consists majorly of clearing off the map by travelling and searching for collectibles, and constant random fights with respawning enemies, and both of these can be frustrating, not because of their difficulty, but primarily due to the drawn-out and repetitive nature of the process. You can skip some of it, if you're not hunting the complete badge, but it can still wear you out somewhere between story chapters. Speaking of the story, well... It has its moments, but surely it does not go deep enough, especially if you're skipping the secondary objectives and stuff. Finally, if you're aiming for achievements, there's some additional content, called Spider's Thread, and it's a bunch of levels not connected with the main story and organized by random rogue-like principle. That's where the game is really magnifying its weakest sides: zero point one percent story and motivation, 99 point 9 percent repetitive combat and grind. While there were some peculiar levels with changed perspective (the main game has only one or two such sequences, but it is a really cool experience), most of grind time in Spider's Thread is totally fruitless and disengaging. Now, I think I said enough to provide the base for the point why Ghostwire: Tokyo met with a rather cool reception, both from pro critics and common players, upon release. However... If you'll skip it, you lose a totally unique experience of a modern ninja-ghosthunter, with bizarre magic shooting fighting system, and full 3-dimensional gameplay, where you run, jump and fly between Tokyo's skyscrapers, interspersed with areas of old, linear development featuring one- or two-story Japanese houses... It's a really fun experience! Also, the setting allows authors to twist the major laws of physics at some points, and this again adds spice to the taste. All in all, I think Ghostwire: Tokyo is worth a 7/10 mark, especially if you are enjoying open-world games where you need to collect stuff.

I played this long back when it first released as PS5 Exclusive, and now that ive got to play it again as a PC Port, I love it even more. The combat is so satisfying, the story is fun to play thru, and everythingis just so fluid and polished, its even better the second time thru. play this game, its such a fun time

A unique experience that lets you explore Tokyo without meeting anyone (which is perfect for introverts), the only downsides are that the gameplay gets too repetitive and the story leaves you hanging
