Intro: I'm honestly shocked by how much I ended up liking this game. The screenshots and trailer made the game seem so dated, so I originally skipped it, but the gameplay experience is actually quite pleasant. I came here after I tried GFL2, which was super dissapointing but it did get me curious about GFL1 after some long-time fans said it's much better, better gameplay, better UI design, better story, F2P friendly due to it not having a horrendous modern gacha system and respecting your time. The heart of the review: That last point is quite important, many gachas these days want you to consider it your 2nd job, playing it several hours a day, then there's lighter ones like Blue Archive that just ask 5-15 mins of your day per day if you don't want to delve into any story, but then there's Girls Frontline 1 which was made before the modern gacha era, you don't feel like playing today or maybe even the entire weekend? No problem, just set some 10 hour logistic mission (your main income of resources) to repeat 6 times in a row, come back to the game anytime after that to claim your rewards. The F2P-friendly comes from the fact that there's no pulling for characters, all characters are part of the tactical-doll manufacturing pool (except a very tiny handful few relegated to achievements / old events that have to be completed first), you just farm materials and t-doll contracts and keep manufacturing those, dump in more resources for better odds at higher rarity characters you can even change the quantities of materials you input to increase the chances of getting a specific class of character such as rifle or shotgun, same goes for equipment, exact same system. There are microtransactions, but everything is easy to grind, so they're very skippable, especially if you have some impulse control and don't need everything "RIGHT NOW" and the more valuable ones like more squad slots or doll capacity (total amount of characters you can hold in the armory) can just be bought with the trickle-feed of diamonds you get by doing dailies and completing achievements. There's a free tier of story-skip which unlocks a lot of mechanics that were added over the years and gives you many diamonds because of all the achievements it completes for you, this however can feel cheaty and destroys any sense of accomplishment, because otherwise hard-earned rewards (very unspecific to remain spoiler-free) are also granted to you because you "Finished" those missions. I took the free tier and in hindsight regret it, the grind would've been harder for sure, but each new step reached and new reward gained would've felt so much better. If you don't mind organically and naturally playing the game, I'd suggest that, it's much more satisfying. The gameplay itself is fine, the combination of squad management, base management, strategic planning (which squads to deploy when and where, who to pull back to refill, how far to push into enemy lines), the tactical gameplay; how to position your units in your squad, which formation buffs are most cohesive, etc, it's fun to delve into and figure out what works best with the theme you set for that specific squad and to then see how they perform as one of the squads on your current mission. Later on you even have to pick your engagements, making sure your slow-firing anti-armor sniper squad doesn't engage the enemy massed-fodder squad or they'll be overrun. The game has a lot of charm, I like the post-WW3 over feel of the game with tactical-waifus that aren't TOO anime-fied unlike in the second game where every character is a trope-character or idol figure and the entire game is generic-anime-slopified. Conclusion and closing words: Considering the game is free and can ACTUALLY be fully played as a fully F2P player there's no reason to not give it a try. If you REALLY want to spend some money, you can, but you don't have to, only 2 or 3 of the new player packages are worth it which add up to like 15 dollars, you don't need the generic battlepass (super skippable) and the free tier of story-skip (which I advised skipping above) gives a ton of diamonds (because it aces the missions it skips, thus giving you all the related achievements, which is where the diamonds come from) you also don't need to buy any diamonds, the first additional squad slot is 50% discounted and then you can either get another slot or expand your armory size (so you can have more dolls total), but as long as you feed your trash dolls to your better dolls in order to increase their stats, you won't really run out of space. I would suggest prioritizing squad slots, because you can have 4 logistics missions running at once and 1 auto battle with 2 squads as well, so that alone can keep 6 squads busy, but then maybe you still want to actually play the game with 1-3 squads in real time, so squad slots are way more important in my opinion and the only thing worth spending diamonds on. The game is actually worth the 15 dollars I spent (the 3 purchases I described above), if this was a 20 dollar game, I would've been happy with my purchase. So yes, I recommend it, it's a good enjoyable game, from an -unfortunately- bygone era, we used to think microtransactions were bad and then we entered the egregious gacha era, we didn't know how good we had it. This is a relic of/from better times in that regard. (The game's global release is almost a decade old) Enjoy it while you can before the server inevitably / eventually go offline.

I have a quabillion hours in this game on the mobile client and played it for what, 8 years? The gameplay is... okay, I mean this is a mobile tactics game that didn't do much in the way of innovating for a very long time. Logged in for the first time in a while and found out you can just P2W your way past the early game story combat missions so you can read the actual meat and potatoes of this game, its story (we'll come back to this). Despite it all, if you intend to actually play this game you should just play it straight, new player progression is very generous and getting a feel for the game early helps later when the entire game just kicks you in the teeth repeatedly with its insane puzzle maps, deathstacks, and enemy types that just hardcounter whatever you thought worked. I'm sure by now there was some powercreep that blasts through anything but, play it straight, it can be pretty fun. The story is where this game really shines. Years in the making with its ups and downs, this is one of the best sci-fi war dramas I've ever read, presented in ok-quality VN format. It's several times longer than the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the gameplay is just filler to break up the insanely long 30+ minute story scenes. It's pretty legendary, and little can compare to it.

As someone who really enjoys strategy games, I thought that this one would be for me. The character designs are gorgeous, but I personally don't vibe with the story much... That said, I played other games with military settings that are more focused on loss and sacrifice, and I feel like all of them did a better job than Girls' Frontline. The gameplay is actually pretty boring for a strategy-focused game. : C Even when you compare it to other gacha games, I just feel like Girls' Frontline can't keep up.

I still remember GFL appearing in the first wave of KanColle-like games. GFL1 has some genuinely good ideas, especially the territorial control on node-based maps, planning mode, and partial automation. But it never developed a coherent progression from manual play to proxy play to fully headless automation. The UI is very noisy, and many systems feel overly crunchy and layered on top of each other. There are simply too many small systems, mechanics, currencies, and exceptions competing for attention. Over the years, the game seems to have accumulated a lot of game-architecture debt. Sometimes restraint matters more than adding another feature; not every interesting system needs to exist in the same game. I'm not sure how the experience is on mobile, but the PC version also feels badly ported. You sometimes see icons overlapping text, and the UI was clearly designed around Chinese first, so many English-translated labels fit poorly or create awkward layouts. Overall, the PC UI/UX feels quite rough. I also don't like per-gun intrinsic skills in this type of game. They make it easier for designers to differentiate each gun, but they also weaken each gun's inherent identity and push the game more toward a conventional RPG.

One of my fav mobile games that I still play. Kind of. Its an old game with lots of content but not sure if there is regularly new content as I think the devs are more focused on their new games now. Even so, I'd still recommend this game to any one into this type of gameplay. The story is a little dark to some maybe? Lots of nice character design and unique enough skill difference to stand apart. Gameplay should be fun for fans of the genre. Although, it would be nice of they had a battle mode with bigger units. Originally, that's what i thought Girls Frontline 2 would be: Bigger units and continuation story. But that's a different topic.
