I went into GRANDIA expecting an old-school JRPG, but I came away feeling like I had actually gone on an adventure. There’s something special about this game that’s hard to explain — it has that classic sense of wonder where every new town, dungeon, character, and strange little corner of the world makes you want to see what’s waiting around the next corner. The combat is easily one of my favorite parts. The timing-based battle system makes fights feel more involved than simply picking “Attack” over and over, and watching the action gauge to interrupt enemies or set up your next move gives battles a surprising amount of strategy. I also love how your characters naturally develop through using weapons and magic, making the progression feel connected to actually playing the game. The soundtrack deserves its own shout-out because some of these tracks have absolutely no business being this good. 🎵 The characters are charming, the world has personality, and the story has that wonderfully cheesy late-'90s JRPG energy that somehow makes it even more enjoyable. Is it perfect? No. Some of the dungeon design can definitely feel dated, and there are moments where you can tell this game comes from another era. But honestly, those rough edges are part of the charm. GRANDIA feels like a game made with genuine love for adventure, exploration, and storytelling. Would I recommend it? Absolutely. If you enjoy classic JRPGs, great music, colorful worlds, and games that make you feel like you're on a real adventure rather than just completing a checklist, give GRANDIA a chance. Verdict: Recommended 👍 Now excuse me while I go find out what ridiculous adventure Justin and the gang are getting themselves into next. 😂

Overall, I really enjoyed this game! It's a fairly standard JRPG: the protagonist goes on a journey, meets new friends along the way, fights monsters, defeats some bosses, saves the world, etc. The music was excellent, and I really liked the 2D sprite artwork! The 2D sprites on top of a 3D environment felt a bit jarring at first, but I got used to it after a while. The combat system was a bit much at first, but you get the hang of it pretty quickly. However, my main concern is with this specific release of Grandia: while I appreciate that some of the artwork is higher resolution and that I can play it on Steam (convenience factor), this is a really crappy port. Right off the bat, in the famous intro sequence that has the camera flying around the starting town, camera movements are incredibly choppy, so much so that it hurt my eyes/head a bit when I first started, and I thought I had configured something incorrectly. This is very problematic because camera rotation is a critical part of moving through the game world. Probably related to this issue, but when the camera moves, the 2D sprites don't move perfectly synced with it, so they have this weird jittery appearance. Also, the FMV cutscenes are extremely pixelated and pretty rough to watch on a 4K TV: if this version is going to be called an "HD Remaster," they should have properly remastered the FMVs, or at the very least, attempted to smooth out the upscaled version instead of just letting it be extremely pixelated. In general, I highly recommend playing Grandia if you're a fan of JRPGs, but beware that this release sucks ("HD Remaster" is a big stretch): if you don't care about the conveniences of Steam integration, you're probably better off emulating an older version (I hear the translated Saturn version is the best experience).

It's a great game don't get me wrong but it doesn't play well on SteamOS even with all the fixes you would see on Proton.DB the game is pretty much a lagfest so if you're planning on buying this game i would suggest that your handheld is using Windows or at least dual booting into Windows.
