What should've been a slam dunk from the lessons learned with the release of CEA and the many failures after from 343 Studios ended up being an extremely average and uninspired remake of one of the greatest FPS games of all time. The game ranges from "hey that's pretty cool" to "wtf were they thinking" throughout the campaign. I will not be discussing the prequel mission as they're just a complete mess and not worth your time compared the base campaign. I'll start with the positives. Pros: The game generally plays pretty well in the gunfights on Heroic at least and the new guns feel like they belong aside from the SMG. That being said it's still not as good as the original so that's not quite the best complement. The game looks beautiful. They really utilized Unreal Engine 5 to its fullest extent here and it shows. Definitely stopped to admire the environment multiple times in each mission. They fixed a lot of the problems with CEA's take on the environments and kept the same atmosphere from the original....for the most part. T&R is very bright for some reason, but the flood levels have been really elevated by the graphics this time. The sound effects for the weapons and the vehicles all sound great as well staying faithful to the original (aside from some like the magnum) while making them sound more modern at the same time. The guns sound weighty. Finally some of the actual changes to the levels layouts work really well even when its just something like an extra room layout in AOTCR. The library is the only level that has been significantly changed and it has definitely been improved. Keyes still sucks however. Cons: Now for the bad. They have completely botched the cutscenes here. They generally feel unfinished and many times the camera just hangs on a character in silence for a few seconds where there was no pause in the original. Character movements just look awkward as well like the cutscene at the end of Two Betrayals where Chief is VERY slowly walking down a hall and talking while one tapping enemies effortlessly and doing the smallest head movements imaginable to "dodge" enemy fire. Johnson's facial movements look AI generated in the cutscenes that he's in. Speaking of Johnson, his new VA did not do a good job and does not come close to the "badass who can crack a couple jokes without sounding cringey" Marine that David Scully portrayed. This guys lines sound like a bad standup comedian, especially in the prequel missions, which is made worse by the fact that he looks like Steve Harvey now for some reason. Captain Keyes new VA also misses the mark here although not as bad as Johnson's. He does sound older which lines up better with the books but he just lacks the gravitas Keyes original VA had and looks like Ronald Reagan??? Now Cortana is truly perplexing because Jen Taylor is back but also just misses the mark on her lines which I can only assume this was because of bad direction from the developers and not herself. Her tone is completely changed from cold, smart and analytical to almost giddy and completely careless to the desperate situation the characters find themselves in. I feel like they were trying to make her like "The Weapon" from Infinite but it just does not work here at all and definitely further ruins some of the best cutscenes from the OG. The gameplay itself is good as I said previously but also misses the mark in places. The AI in general is noticeably dumber than the OG. Marines just take rounds to the face and do nothing frequently, the covenant throw their lives away constantly and the flood are barely a threat unless there is a massive horde of them. At the same time however Legendary difficulty is significantly harder than the OG almost to Halo 2 levels of punishment. Chief gets melted extremely fast by enemies while Elites especially are absolute bullet sponges without any skulls on. Why are elite majors tanking plasma grenade sticks? Hunters are by far the most annoying enemy now. Their health is fine and they still have a weak spot that makes them easy to kill if you can knock their backplate off but they no longer will get close to you and charge you opening them up for an attack on their back, instead they hang back and rapidly fire extremely accurate fuel rod shots that can one hit you on legendary just from splash damage making sections like the grav lift room on T&R an absolute slog. Finally the bad AI is compensated for by an insane amount of enemies in some sections of the game on Legendary, like T&R, which just completely goes against the "30 seconds of fun" philosophy that Bungie had with their Halo games. Legendary should be hard yes but it shouldn't be unfair and unfun, if you want that then there are a ridiculous amount of skulls in the game for you to collect. Which leads me to my next complaint. Lack of content. There's a lot of skulls, cool. This is a remake of CE for $50 with No multiplayer, no theater mode, no campaign scoring or timing, no firefight and even before release Halo Studios already made it clear they will not be adding anything new after launch. What are we doing here? This seems like such a half baked effort from Halo Studios first release its insulting. Oh but they added new cosmetics right? Problem is none of them are unlocked through just playing the game, not a single one. All the unique ones have to be paid for and many of the ones that are just color changes have to be redeemed on halo waypoint. -_- Conclusion: There's much more I could get into but this review is already long enough. At the end of the day I walked away from this game just feeling "meh" and I really wanted to like it. Its hard to believe after Halo CEA, 4, 5 and Infinite this company still can't capture what made the originals so beloved by fans in a remake of the first game. Modders are already working on fixing a lot of the gameplay issues but the cutscenes are prerendered and are never going to be changed. If you are someone who loves this game more power to you I'm glad you're having a great time but I am incredibly tired of seeing people aggressively attack ANY criticism of the slop that this company feeds us. We all deserve better and we should not just settle for average when this franchise once defined a generation of FPS games.

I love that a game that is heavily known for its coop has tons of disconnection issues with zero ability to rejoin or be invited mid game. What a very very very well thought out design. Avoid buying. Go play Halo MC Edition. It is literally better in almost every way.

I really dislike this game. I just can't understand what the thought process of this game was aside from "Making halo for a modern audience". Pros: Graphics: The game is gorgeous. The world is unbelivable to look at and the enviornments really come together beautifully. The technology of the covenant, the armor of the spartans, the weapon effects; all of it truly looks incredible. Whoever did the graphical and artistry work in this game definitely nailed it. The skybox and the halo ring itself look beautiful as well. Gameplay - realistically the weapons and gameplay itself is still fundamentally halo, but moreso focused on "clear enemies and enter the next room to clear enemies" trope that original bungie was trying to avoid with their design. The guns feel good, they sound good, they have impact. The warthog feels good, physics are typical halo, it all feels and sounds good overall. Music - The music is really good in the game, but thats because its all ripped from previous halo games. In the new missions, they just steal music from other halo games and plant it at random moments in this game. While the music is great, its only great because greater people made it. Cons: New Missions - The new missions are absolute trash. You can see the stark difference between the story pacing, story elements, character dialogue, mission structure. All of it is modern halo studios and you can clearly see they dont have the creativity or capability to properly do a halo game on their own. They botched three missions in a game that they otherwise just had to copy someone elses homework. Its a joke. LT Williams is insufferable and they try to mask it under the lore of the ODST but truthfully it all just feels out of place, forced and overall a massive joke to this franchise. The new missions themselves are also buggy. The game bugged out with johnson literally ten MINUTES into the first mission and 30 minutes into the first mission, resulting in a reload and progress reset multiple times. I cant even imagine what a full halo new game would look like under a studio this incapable. They cant even copy homework. Glitches and Bugs galore - As mentioned previously, this game actually feels broken sometimes. You will go a while with nothing then all of a sudden, get bugs back to back and you wonder WTF did they do with their time. They literally designed these new missions while copying everything else and still somehow botched it. New Mission Story - As you can see, a lot of my issues are with the new missions. They fundmentally ruin the experience of this remake. The story is garbage and is simple there to shoehorn in this new character williams for the few moments she is there. She purely exists only to completely ♥♥♥♥ on Master Chief and the spartan legacy under the guise of "lore" reasoning. They could have made this so much better but the mindset was clearly in one direction and it wasn't in the direction of respecting halo or master chief in any capacity. They probably hated remaking this game without being able to change the core experience so they added these PREQUEL missions to get a one up on the original. No Multiplayer - They sacrificed multiplayer in this game, a fundamental core aspect of halo, for these new missiosn that serve zero purpose and overall ruin the remake more than its already ruined. I dont get it man. Overall Halo Campaign Evolved is a BEAUTIFUL game, with the skin of halo but at its core, is anything but Halo. I highly recommend you play Master Chief Collection instead, as you will get way more of your money worth and actually have multiplayer plus MULTIPLE games for a CHEAPER price. This remake is a joke. Only buy it as super sale when it eventually gets there. Thanks for reading.

I just finished the main campaign solo on Legendary. A part of me really wants to be able to recommend the game, but it's too much of a mixed bag to justify spending $50+ on it. Let's start with the good. - The game looks great, particularly in outdoor environments. I'm in the camp of people who think the Forerunner and Covenant architecture should've looked more akin to how they did in the original Combat Evolved, but I can set those sentiments aside to acknowledge how beautiful just about everything else looks. If this is 'UE slop', send me to the pigsty for more helpings. - Halo's gameplay is as fun as ever. Even with sprint (a mechanic I've never been fond of in the series), movement still has that classic 'floaty' feel to it. I never felt like I had to sprint; the levels are still designed relatively proportionate to how they were in the original, so walking through the whole game was completely viable. The gunplay is also a standout here. Every weapon serves a purpose in the sandbox, even with the addition of new guns like the SMG. Most returning weapons function very similarly to how they did in the original CE. The shotgun rips through anything at close range, the magnum is still a pocket sniper, and the AR still feels good to spray (even with the reduced magazine size). Now onto the middling stuff. - Enemy AI is pretty janky. I should preface this by noting that I've never been a fan of Reach's Covenant. They're overly aggressive, they move weird, and are oftentimes unpredictable. The original CE Covenant were, in my opinion, the best in the franchise. I don't know what the feasibility of reworking CE's AI to more modern animations/models would've been, but that would've been a better route than just copying and pasting Reach's AI onto the Infinite models. The only reason this is a mixed point and not a direct negative is due to the upgraded Hunters and the Flood. Halo 3's Flood are insanely fun to tear through, and that remains unchanged here. The Tank forms are a nice addition as well (thank you Fireteam Raven for making them canonically present on Alpha Halo). Time for the bad. - The game holds the player's hand way too much. Yes, I know everything can be toggled off to make it more like the classic game, but some of these 'accessibility features' shouldn't be turned on by default—let alone in the game at all. Why do I need HUD markers over the last few enemies in every section? Why are waypoints guiding me through a level that's supposed to be confusing and stress-inducing for the player? It's insulting that the devs just assume people can't figure out basic mechanics without being guided every step of the way. - The voice acting ranges from 'just okay' to atrocious. This is at no fault to the voice actors themselves, but rather whoever directed them. Cortana's inflections are all over the place. We get small glimpses of the dry and sarcastic Cortana from the original game, but those moments are supremely overshadowed by the jarring split personalities she has otherwise. Some lines feel like they're spoken by the cutesy/innocent Weapon from Halo Infinite, others sound like a preschool teacher talking down to Master Chief like he's a toddler, and several are so flat you'd think Jen Taylor wasn't even trying. She deserves so much better. Additionally, the new voice actors for Keyes and Johnson don't quite hit the mark for me. Johnson's at least tries to emulate David Scully, but Keyes' sounds so incredibly generic that it makes me wish they'd just reused Pete Stacker's original dialogue. The only character who stays on par with the original is Tim Dadabo as Guilty Spark. - The cutscenes are so bad that it's laughable at times. It's clear they were trying to go for a more cinematic and movie-like approach (a la Blur Studios' H2A cinematics), but it was executed extremely poorly. Both the facial and body motion capture is so hard to look at that it gives me secondhand embarrassment. I felt like I was watching a parody of the original game at several moments. There are some cool shots here and there (the double Hunter kill by Keyes is way more badass than the original), but it's 90-10 in terms of negative-to-positive. The verdict: There's some good stuff in here, but the game largely feels rushed and undercooked. It's leagues above CE Anniversary as far as aesthetics go, and the gameplay is still quintessentially Halo at its core. It's just that everything else feels so muddled and visionless. I get that the project was probably just a way for Halo Studios to get used to using Unreal, but that shouldn't have been a shipped product. I'd recommend waiting for the product to get knocked down by at least 40% on sale before picking it up. 4/10

This game asks the brave question, "What if--instead of being potentially the most influential video game of all time built passionately by a team of devs crafting the game they themselves would want to play--Halo was just a financial obligation fulfilled by people who don't understand the appeal of Halo?"

A masterpiece remade by people who absolutely have no idea what makes Halo fun, have no understanding of the lore, and seem to actively hate Master Chief. The only fun part of this game is what was left untouched from the original.
