I had already played the original HimaNatsu using machine translation, so this review is mainly meant to explain what you should expect from the game rather than comment on the quality of the English release. HimaNatsu is a story about summer, memories, time, and the people we leave behind. Its philosophy is pretty grounded (though not the core focus). Instead of trying to present some grand philosophical system it uses ideas about time, death, memory, and moving forward to give its characters and setting emotional weight. The game's greatest strength is probably its atmosphere. Oboshiro feels like a real place, with its countryside, church, legends, and long summer days creating a strong sense of nostalgia. The writing also has a literary quality that becomes apparent during the more emotional sections, with recurring imagery and ideas about flowers, memories, and the passage of time. I did have some complaints though. The routes are uneven, with some being considerably weaker than others. The slice of life sections can drag, and sometimes the supernatural elements can feel awkwardly integrated. (And some people’s expectations weren’t met with the ending) -How it differs from other SCA works- SCA did not write all of HimaNatsu. If you're coming to HimaNatsu because of Sakura no Uta (which has yet to officially release in English) or Subahibi, don't expect another work on that level of philosophical density. HimaNatsu contains philosophical and literary ideas, but they are mostly used to explore its emotional themes rather than becoming the central focus. Subahibi in particular is built around philosophy, perception, language, and existential ideas in a way HimaNatsu simply isn't. HimaNatsu’s themes are much more focused on people, memories, nostalgia, and the passage of time. Its setting, atmosphere, and strongest routes is where it shines. If you go in expecting another Subahibi or Sakura no uta you will probably be disappointed. Overall, I think it’s a great visual novel as long as you go in with the right expectations.

A huge moment, since Himanatsu is the first game by Makura to receive an official English translation (if we don't count ATRI, since it was a collaboration project between Makura, Fronwing, and ANIPLEX.EXE) And while this isn't a SCA-DI's solo project, the creator of Subahibi and Sakura no Uta was a producer, wrote the text for one route (Yomi), created the plots for two routes (Yomi and Hina), and contributed to the common route, so his influence was pretty significant overall Some of you might be worried that this is just a moege, but that's definitely not the case. Take something like Ruka's route, and you'll get a ton of suspenseful drama that doesn't end within five minutes. Of course, you'll still get a lot of comfy scenes, but the overall mood is closer to something like, I don't know, Little Busters and Grisaia than Yuzusoft Speaking of which, the common route *is* very comfy. Having a little child among the main cast helps a lot, making it feel especially wholesome and simply fresh. Also, it stops the story from becoming horny way too often, something Sakura no Uta is guilty of, so in this respect, Himanatsu is in a leading position, since it doesn't annoy you nearly as much as its successor does (surprising, right?) Overall, the game also features routes written by the creators of ATRI (Hina's route) and H2O: Footprints in the Sand (Ruka's route), so make sure to take a look at them if you like these creators. That said, Yomi and Hina are arguably the main part of Himanatsu, so it wouldn't be fair to skip them in the first place And, of course, a Makura game wouldn't be a Makura game without its recognizable coloring and background music. They're as gorgeous as they are in Subahibi and Sakura no Uta and add a lot to the atmosphere So yeah, don't sleep on Himanatsu simply because it's less famous than Sakura no Uta. While it's not perfect, some parts of it are easily better and more fleshed out, so it's still a treat for any fan of the team (no wonder SCA-DI said that scenario writers Konno Asta and J-Sairo taught him a lot when it comes to writing games like this one) —Visual Novel News, @ErogeAreAlive Find other notable visual novel releases you might be not aware of

Who wants to Hima their Natsu? Through the intro section it's cute, has some comedic bits, and the characters are set up well. It's clearly foreshadowing some stuff I think I've already figured out, but who knows, I could be wrong. Systems are smooth so far and I haven't noticed any localization errors as of this time. Music is good and appropriate. If you're reading this it may already be too late but be careful looking too deep in reviews, after this game was announced a surprising amount of the Japanese reading western audience decided to react by posting major spoilers in twitter replies, etc. for both this visual novel as well as another that was announced - Sakuuta. I'll update this review as I read it and/or finish it, but it may be a bit as I am reading quite a few stories at once right now.

I've already read this in JP, although I rather re-read it in English too. HimaNatsu is a story about simple life, about simple people. Sca-Ji, and Makura in general has a certain reputation that inherits philosophical element within the complex nuance and narrative circling around the fandom, and it bloomed even in modern internet memes that even the much younger generation knows of some odd parts of weirdly manipulated expression by how they understand the ugliness of model masculinity that Takuji tried to portray. To me, HimaNatsu was the attempt for Makura to dislodge themselves with such perception, but that doesn't mean you won't face a particularly interesting narrative in HimaNatsu. A story doesn't need to be philosophical to have philosophical elements. After all, philosophy are just ideas that came from life. Life imitates art. Art imitates life.

I genuinely enjoyed HimaNatsu overall. The atmosphere, characters, and especially the summer setting were really charming, and there were a lot of moments that I ended up really liking. It has a unique feeling to it that made the experience memorable. That being said, I absolutely hated the main route. The direction it takes Yosuke and Hina's relationship is extremely uncomfortable and honestly disgusting to me, especially considering their relationship beforehand. It completely took me out of the story and made it very difficult for me to enjoy that part of the VN and i felt like i was forcing myself to read it after realizing the direction their relationship was heading to. Despite that, I still think HimaNatsu is a worthwhile read. There is a lot here that I genuinely liked, and I don't regret playing it, but the main route is easily my biggest problem with the game.
