I’ve made a total of four advances into this Homeworld prequel since its release, as its desert environment, faux-biblical narrative, simple combat and somber tone seemed evocative. I bounced off every time. The combat is simple – and there’s nothing else to it. Just rock-paper-scissors with some additions. Positioning matters little. Perhaps, it’s by design – to emulate space combat of the original dilogy, but it does feel weak. The desert environment is beautiful, but has little in the way of variation or terrain tactical complexity. Given that it’s a rocky Sinai-like desert, things could be done with it, but they weren’t. There are dust tornados that… Are there, I suppose? It’s not like they add much to the gameplay… The somber tone is very dry, even by my aridity-accustomed standards. Constant impersonal tech-speak with an occasional out-of-the-blue jolt of unbridled prophetic pathos. As for the faux-biblical narrative… I played Perimeter when I was ten, and that stuff was ten times stronger on top of being a good complex RTS, what are you even trying to impress me with? I say, if you do get this game, then do so for the graphics (but word to the wise: Kenshi presents better desert screenshotting opportunities). Otherwise – play Highfleet or Perimeter for better experience in a somewhat similar aesthetic field.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak surprised me. I enjoyed it much more than the previous Homeworld games, and the presentation is one of its strongest points. The campaign feels very cinematic, and the game does a good job of making the expedition feel important rather than simply moving the player from one mission to another. The problem is that the campaign starts repeating itself too much. After a strong beginning, the missions increasingly follow the same structure: move through the map, search the wreckage for resources, build more units and fight the same types of battles again. Even when the objectives change, the gameplay loop remains very similar, and the missions are also extremely long. I kept expecting the next mission to introduce something different, only to find myself doing almost exactly what I had just done before. I also had some problems with unit control and accessibility. Sometimes units would simply ignore enemies that were extremely close to them, forcing me to select them manually and order an attack. This becomes particularly annoying when trying to make an incursion or move a group of units through an enemy position, because the units do not always react the way I expect them to. The way units are selected could also be more accessible, with a clearer HUD-based system similar to what I prefer in games like Company of Heroes or Men of War. I understand that this is a different type of RTS, and that is not necessarily a problem. However, I personally prefer RTS games that give me more freedom to build, fortify positions, conduct different types of attacks and approach battles in different ways. Deserts of Kharak is much more linear, with the campaign constantly moving from one mission to the next without giving me that same level of freedom. There is still a good game here. The presentation, atmosphere and narrative are well done, and I genuinely enjoyed the first part of the campaign. Unfortunately, the repetition eventually became too much for me, and after around ten hours I simply did not have the patience or motivation to continue the story. For what it offers, I think 5/10 is fair. Score: 5/10 (1) Trash(2) Horrible(3) Very Bad(4) Bad(5) Average (6) Fine(7) Good(8) Very Good(9) Great(10) Masterpiece

It's a good prequel to the main story. The game looks brilliant, gameplay and level design are good. No complains at all.

What a bizarre game. Let’s get this out of the way; the game is incredibly unfinished. Whole swaths of missions and story just aren’t there, and it hurts the game pretty badly. It suffers from a frustrating early game, the controls are awful and the camera is bad. You cannot rebind anything (unless you jump through a few hoops the devs added in patches, appreciate the effort devs!). Unit design is decent, mission variety is alright. There’s some really good scenes, really great visuals, great missions, awful scenes, dumb visuals, and awful missions. The story kind of crudely retcons a lot of Homeworld lore for no good reason and, finally, it just sort of deflates at the end. But it’s still fun for what it’s worth, and I still recommend at least one playthrough. Link To Full Review: https://lorerunner.com/familiar-5#HomeworldDOK

Great fundamentals, very fun. Interesting story too. It's no lord of the rings, but the story serves it's purpose. I'm sure it'd be more interestign if I knew more about homeworld lore before I played it though.

pretty good storywise, connects well to the main games without spoiling much retains the "keep your fleet and money between missions" mechanic which does make the game a bit too easy at times if you know how to protect and repair your stuff even though it uses (almost) the same UI elements, the game is actually in 2.5D (only a few depth layers, and that's just a buff/debuff) - a minimap could help with immersion but the tactical view is a classic so its ok even though it is significantly newer compared to Starcraft 2, graphics-wise it is much worse than it (and that's before the graphics overhaul sc2 got). so that's one quip I have. buy it on sale obviously, it is old and pricey. don't bother with the DLCs
