I will start by saying that I recommend you play both, Ittle Dew 1 and 2. 1 feels more like a clever replayable, puzzle game with zelda gameplay whereas 2 feels more like a true zelda game. Ittle Dew 1 was designed with 4 different paths. It was a game that was meant to be replayed and for you to route the different possible paths. The devs also changed the graphics style from 2D to 3D. I think both are fine even if I prefer the 2D art from the previous game. Ittle Dew 2 is a bit strange in that they changed the design from Ittle Dew 1. Ittle dew 2 goes crazy with map design and gives you complete freedom to complete the dungeons in any order. This gives the game a nice open world sense of the world. Everything is open from the start, and you can complete everything in any order. I can't remember a single moment that I had to backtrack. The consequence of this means the devs have needed to simplify a lot of puzzles, which for me is a good thing. It means the pacing of the overworld exploration feels fast, smooth and fun. Secrets and puzzles around every corner that you can always solve. Also note: You are supposed to only play Ittle Dew 2 once. --- My own and others critisms for Ittle Dew 2 I want to address some common critism you might read if you read the other reviews to shine a light on them. Some of them might be from pre 2+ versions. Dodge Rolling. Some other reviewers have pointed out that the dodge roll is unforgiving and needed for puzzle. I think the dodgeroll is maybe it's a tiny bit too short, but it's very usable. You also get an upgrade that extends the dodge window a bit. Failing a dodge roll is also okay. As respawns are fast and the damage from falling is minimal. Puzzle Difficulty. The puzzle difficulty is much easier in 2. There are some hard puzzles in the dream world, but in the base game they are I'd say easy. My experience is if I could not solve a puzzle it was because there was a mechanic that was not well explained. (LIKE DIAGONAL PUZZLE SOLUTIONS. WHYYYY.) Combat. The bosses suck. They are a combination of way too hard or too annoying so you will either give up on timing attacks and learning patterns and just go full ham or you will look to cheese the combat. The bosses in the base game are easy so you can complete them however you want. The bonus bosses are where the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ starts. The game luckily has no stamina system which mitigates a lot of frustration thankfully. Keys and shortcuts. So. The devs realized they ended up making a different game than the prequel. A lot of Ittle Dew 1 was figuring out how to "break" the "all items path" to the ending by completing puzzles with alternative solutions and in alterative ways. To give the player the same sort of feel the devs added shortcuts in each main dungeon, and gave you consumable keys to open any golden lock in any dungeon. The problem with this is as a completionist I want to see every room and puzzle. I don't want to skip content. This doesn't really work as well as Ittle Dew'1 alterative paths. The game is also fairly long so adding alternative paths to every dungeon and item combination would not work either. It would be a design nightmare. I think the game would've been better if the keys and shortcuts were actually removed as all they really do is really remind you that Ittle Dew 2 has a prequel. it makes speedrun routing the game a bit more fun, but that's about it. Mirrors. I haven't seen anybody complain about this. But a lot of puzzles, especially in the dream world. Require bouncing projectiles off of mirrors. You need to be extremely precise to get the mirror to actually work. This combined with the rapid timing of a lot of the mirror puzzles makes these puzzles infurating. It is almost so bad I am contemplating not recommending the game. But luckily mirrors are not a massive feature in the base game. Overall as I said. Play the game, it's worth it. Devs experimented a bit with this title, some things landed some things missed. I think this is why setting the expectation of people playing your game is important. People get expectations from sequels all the time. I think the game would've been better received if it was something else. Ittle dew 2+: Open World. I don't know. Anyway, overall a great experience.
