Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass
Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass is a Japanese-style RPG made by a guy from Texas. It was very much influenced by SNES-era jRPGs, particularly Earthbound , Final Fantasy 5 , and the Breath of Fire series, among others. It was also heavily influenced by Yume Nikki .
The game takes place in the dream of an eight-year-old boy. When an alien entity appears and threatens his family and the stability of the dream world itself, Jimmy sets out on an adventure to save his family and eradicate the threat of the Pulsating Mass. Along the way, Jimmy will have to work with his family, confront his own shortcomings, and brave the creeping nightmares of his subconscious.
Features: -Full-length Japanese-style RPG. -Classic turn-based combat with some modern sensibilities. -A big emphasis on exploration. -As an empathetic kid, Jimmy gains the ability to imagine himself as several of the monsters he meets, allowing him to interact with the world in new ways. -These different transformations can also be leveled up, granting Jimmy higher stats and new abilities. -A story for adults delivered from the perspective of a child. -Jokes. -Unspeakable horrors.
Note: for some versions of Mac, the game may not be able to save if you've placed the game in the root "/Applications" folder. Instead, put it somewhere in your home folder, such as "~/Documents."

One of the better RPGs I've played in recent years. Highly underrated! I love games that mix the light and dark, the contrast brings out its themes more than just a straight horror game. I played on easy mode to minimize grinding, though even then later fights required it. Music was great too,, there are several standout tracks, but it all fit together well.

JatPM has been an insightful, interesting and expansive story with a lot of elements that rivals a lot of games out there (At least with my experience, which might be little). The lore, secrets and challenges you face can be both innocuous and impactful when you realise just how much it will challenge your decisions. And trust me, this game will genuinely knock you off your feet when you realise just how suspenseful it can get. A lot of love, time and effort went into this game and for being less than half a gig for size? It's ridiculously packed. The music as well has been wonderful too. A friend had introduced me to it to begin with, which didn't give me too much of an impression but playing the game has changed my mind wildly. There's a fair few moments where there's a lesson to be learned too, expect a heartfelt moment or two. It got a very large smile out of me at one point... Sneaky devs. To give you a sense of preparation, there will be a bit of item/ character management during your progression, slightly more in the late game. If you intend to try and complete this game to its fullest extent, expect about 100 hours of gameplay. There will be repetition, levelling up and retracing your steps. It's not a "linear" Point A to B. You need some strategy to enemies too. Don't think that you can just powerhouse DPS and think a clear win will be in sight. I'm putting this game at a very high 8 out of 10 and may bump it higher once (and if) I can complete it entirely. I've yet to still uncover everything and look forward to it.

Incredible soundtrack, hard-hitting & well-told story, great dialogue and characters, simple but charming pixel art, and unsettling cosmic horror all wrapped into a punishing game with an absurd amount of content. Banger RPG.
