Katamari Damacy was released in 2004 and was unlike anything available at the time. It not only spawned the Katamari franchise, but it also indirectly supported the growth of absurdist gaming in North America - my opinion of course. Personally, I loved it and my love of all games Katamari. Katamari Damacy REROLL was released on Steam in 2018 and I'm commenting here in 2026. Neat. The best thing to say about this game, and this port, is that it's the best place to get started in Katamari. Like, if you have never played any Katamari game before, maybe found it kinda curious, then this is the best place to get started. The game is short and sweet, the controls are simple (and much improved in 20 years), and it still sparks the same joy. Oh, and the soundtrack is worth the price of admission alone. Definitely buy on a discount. Due to being a BANDAI IP and the OG Katamari, it goes on sale often enough. If the premise and gameplay appeal to you, then there are a ton of followup games with all sorts of improved gameplay, games, and ways to play.

Always liked this katamari game over the sequels, is short in comparison but each level is such a joy to play. Also great port

Short and silly. What an absolute joy! Just start rolling things into your ball until you reach the desired size. Eventually, you'll be rolling entire land masses into a moon sized ball. I love everything about it. Took me about 5 hours to complete all the levels.

I'd love to love this game. This has been recommended to me after playing "The Wonderful End Of The World" and where that game was intuitive and beautiful, Katamari feels like its developers tried to create issues on purpose. The controls are completely horrendous. I tried when I bought it and now that I re-played Wonderful End I wanted to try it again, but due to the controls (which you can not re-map) it's utterly unplayable to me. Sorry, I'd love to love it, but I simply can't. Mostly I can at least say something positive about a game, but this game won't let me get to that stage. It's unplayable. Do not buy it. Apparently the successor has re-mapable controls so that may be an option, but it's very pricy and I'm not willing to gamble like that right now.

No duh I recommend this game! You play as a little guy using a ball to roll up everything in your path. What's not to like? In all seriousness, this game is just satisfying to play. Slowly working your way up with your katamari to pick up bigger objects is immensely satisfying and oddly serene. Top that with a very wacky Japanese sense of humor and solid music, how can this game not be considered one of the best games ever made?

Simply an era-defining game—one of the very best of the '00s. Right around when I'd started feeling like the art of gaming had stagnated since the PS1/Saturn/N64 era, along came this masterpiece that couldn't have been made on that hardware and was unlike anything else I had played before. Katamari Damacy is charming and genuinely funny, and conveys a sense of wonder and appreciation for all the things and beings that make up our world from the scale of crumbs to continents. Throughout the whole game, silly little moments are happening all around you, and Katamari Damacy's environment reminds me of something like a Where's Waldo book—but one where you're sweeping everything up with you as you explore further, in a way that does not feel destructive but rather like forming a deep symbiosis with everything. Everything (2017) felt heavily inspired by Katamari Damacy and explored this in a much more overbearing way. Your starting size varies and ending size ever increases with the progression of the levels, and between what I would call the two standout best levels (Make a Star 4 and Make the Moon), you cover the whole range, going from a 5cm sphere to an over 300m one. You can unlock Eternal (untimed) versions of these stages, which might be the best way to enjoy them. Less enjoyable are the few stages where you have to be careful about what NOT to pick up, but since these are not an obstacle to progression (you pass them even if you do poorly), they're really not much of a fault. I recommend Katamari Damacy as highly as I can recommend any game, but please be aware that there are a couple of resolvable but irritating issues with this port that make a bad first impression: 1. The options menu is not accessible at all until after you finish the tutorial level. So until then, you're stuck with the default screen resolution, volume, and controls. 2. The default volume is EXTREMELY LOUD. Like, I had to bring it down to 25% for it to be around the same level as everything else on my computer. Also, because the volume levels are set per save file, no adjustments you make in-game will affect the sounds and music that play before you load your file. So I recommend instead bringing up Volume Mixer and lowering the sound for the whole app. I waited until I had a PS5 controller to buy this because Katamari Damacy is designed around a gamepad with symmetrically aligned sticks, controlling as if the sticks were your left and right arms held out in front of you with hands placed on the ball you're rolling. But I also tried it with an Xbox controller for the hell of it, and it is actually *not that bad*, and my brain adjusted pretty quickly. There is also an alternate simple control scheme that I briefly tried and found less intuitive than the normal controls, but your mileage may vary.

Gra nie udaje głębokiego RPG-a ani ponurego thrillera. Jest to czysty koncentrat gameplayu, który zjada większość współczesnych, rozdętych budżetowo wydmuszek na śniadanie. Stała w zasadach, hipnotyzująca rozgrywka nie nudzi się nigdy, a satysfakcja z rosnącej do rozmiarów planety kuli to dopaminowy strzał. Solidne 5.5/6, pozycja obowiązkowa dla każdego, kto ma w sobie chociaż odrobinę człowieczeństwa.
